Hint: The AfD got protest votes from people who believed that the current mainstream parties were not conservative/nationalist not by people who actually want socialism or a German Sanders.

Ligur posted:Didn't the politician in question talk about Wehrmacht instead of the SS and Hitler-Satan? The Wehrmacht were complicit in the actions of the Einsatzgruppen (although to be fair some officers complained to their higher-ups that all this killing civilians business was bad for morale), and committed war crimes by their merry selves as well. This is a really dumb, wrong pedantic argument to try and make.

"The politician in question" is a neo-nazi; you are trying to make him look like a reasonable not-a-Nazi by attempting to argue about semantics, which is certainly a form of defense. And no, sorry, there are absolutely zero way that a statement that "Germans should be proud of what their army did during WW2" can be seen as disconnected from Nazism. Everything the Wehrmacht did during WW2 was at the behest of Germany's Nazi government; if you're proud of the Wehrmacht's accomplishments then you are proud of how Hitler's orders were obeyed. Just gently caress off with that poo poo.

Could it possibly be that the people who voted for AfD did so because they thought that an open doors policy for 1.6m refugees was too much, not because they really strongly agreed with a statement about the Wehrmacht? Also, while "proud" isn't really the best word, being impressed by how the Germans conquered nearly all of Europe maybe doesn't make you a Nazi or agree with them starting the war in the first place, let alone the whole holocaust thing? (other than in the eyes of a groups of posters here who throw the word "Nazi" around like there's a Nazi lurking around every corner) Like you can be impressed by German rocket scientists during WW2 who were also working under instructions from Hitler and who also created weapons that killed innocent civilians. Obviously they don't have to strongly agree with it, but clearly they are fine with people being proud about Nazis and what they did. It's like in the Netherlands if you vote for the "Freedom Party" you might not hate Muslims, but clearly you are fine with their religion being banned. Most people who complain about globalization and the lazy immigrants are actually the laziest people in society that expect to do exactly the same thing over and over until they get their pension and not have to learn a single new thing in their life. When something changes their plan and they have to adapt, it's obviously not their fault, it's the rest of the world that's to blame. gently caress off.

Geriatric Pirate posted:Could it possibly be that the people who voted for AfD did so because they thought that an open doors policy for 1.6m refugees was too much, not because they really strongly agreed with a statement about the Wehrmacht? The "official" AfD justification is that Gauland was just citing Mitterand who said something very similar 20 years ago, that most soldiers, French and German, fought valiantly for their country and many of them made the ultimate sacrifice. In that interpretation being "proud of what the German soldiers did in two world wars" is more about individual valor and sacrifice and not how many countries they conquered.

Do I really have to spell out what the Nazi Final Solutions for foreign influence (perceived or actual) is? And why it's just a little problematic to vote for these people? And why that might just tell us a little something about you if you do it anyway? The only German soldiers to be proud of during the Nazi period were those who fought in the Thalmann Battalion. You could basically burn your SS-uniform and switch to "Heil Stalin!" and presto: One Nazi less, one Communist more. Kassad posted:Wasn't the official line in East Germany literally that people there did nothing wrong during the war? As opposed to the actual acknowledgement by West Germany that the German people had indeed hosed up? Communists had an... Interesting take on the Holocaust and German aggression. quote:According to Fox, within the framework of orthodox Marxist thinking, oppression based on ethnicity, race, gender or religion was typical only for capitalist society and generally held the status of a ‘secondary’ phenomenon in comparison to class oppression. Anti-Semitism, for example, was viewed as a distraction created by the ruling class to divert the attention of people from their true oppressors. The Holocaust was a consequence of racist fascism (directed not only at Jews, but also at Slavs), which was, in turn, the ultimate expression of capitalism and imperialism. Thus, the roots of the Holocaust, according to Soviet ideologists, lay in capitalism, expressed in its most degenerate form – fascism. According to Marxist ideology, by changing the economic and political system from capitalist to socialist, citizens could free themselves from such matters as anti-Semitism and racism (Fox, 2004: 420)
