They deserve all exposure they can get, amazing band.

I mean they go from demented sludgey blues rock to godflesh-esque dirge to dissonant noise rock ballads. The fact that they enjoyed even a sliver of success outside of the heavy underground pre-internet is a testament to how great they are. Perfect band, really.

There is a covers band that plays my local area that plays nothing but the THPS 1 sound track. It's amazing how popular it is.

Which album should I start with?

my top 3 would be:

1. visqueen, their most accessible album. somewhat more melodic and "grown up" than their previous albums. seriously, listen to this bass:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efARwpSxvoE

2. scattered, smothered & covered, the classic album. at this point they were starting to find their songwriting skills instead of just a few mean riffs, a shitload of feedback and spencers hosed up yelp on top. not that there's anything wrong with that either, but the great songs are what makes unsane stand above most of their peers. surprisingly this is their only one released on amphetamine reptile. surprising because they're considered the godfathers of noise rock and amrep is the holy mountain.

3. singles 89-92, a compilation of their earliest works. basically a few mean riffs, a shitload of feedback and spencers hosed up yelp on top. it's like if early swans was a bunch of gas huffing skaters instead of the arty nihilists they were.

here's a few side projects while i'm at it:

cuttthroats 9, chris spencers band with the bassist from 16 and a revolving door of drummers. way sludgier than his main band, fits in real well in this thread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glYxWwvxsf4

pigs, dave currans side project. more noise rock and melody based than what this thread is about i guess, but still it's fair share of got pounding rhythms, sludgy riffs and huge basslines:

Not really feeling this very much. Where Death Meets the Sea is great but the rest is kind of boring.

Definitely not as good as Vaenir.

They begin again

I like it a lot but there's something missing where the spooky atmosphere used to be. I don't know. The first track grew on me over time so maybe the entire album will too.

For me its just not as crushingly, heavily evil as Vaenir, and thats what brings me to the genre mostly.

semi related, I had a conversation with my brother about those [slow heavy metal music playing] memes. he was like "man, I know what I think of when I see those memes, but I am actually terrified of the music you hear in your head you see those memes."

It's taking me a while but the new Ufomammut is good poo poo. First time through I wasn't that into it and the production seemed a little light for the content but nah it's great stuff. I think they sometimes have sneaky depth to their music.

Also, just discovered Slabdragger. They are just as big/heavy/stupid as the name implies and I love them.

I dunno, I really dig the new Monolord. I only discovered them for the first time when one of the singles was released and since then I've been mainlining the other two records like crazy. I just bought it on Bandcamp, the first record I've actually purchased in forever.

New Dead Quiet: https://deadquiet.bandcamp.com/album/grand-rites

I've heard the rest of the record, and it's the good stuff. The track they're streaming is probably one of the weaker ones.

The next Hashteroid album is gonna snap some necks too. My boy Mike is killing it on bass in both bands!
