If you're a handsome man entering middle age seems like getting a CBS action drama is good for a 10 year paycheck at least. Good for Boreanz.

I'm really looking forward to everyone eventually hating that show.

I feel like This is Us is going to have a pretty short shelf life. As pointed out, they're already having to make characters be complete assholes out of nowhere in order to generate drama and they're running out of directions to take, because with the time-shifting we already know where people end up. That first season was completely anchored by Ron Cephas Jones, full stop.

I'll give it points for somehow making Parenthood's misery porn look positively uplifting in comparison, though.

It's a satire of New York High Society wherein the nouveau-riche attained their high status because they're wizards who fight demons. It used to be a big problem, but these days demons are more like nuisances, so old money basically treats them like any other brand of new money. Kaz is an obscenely self-absorbed, vain, and lazy wizard—picture your typical Wes Anderson lead and then halve the charm—who takes an interest in a popular fashion blogger, Helena, after exorcising her Coco Chanel pantsuit. But the possession changes her, and she becomes a shut in—hikkikomori, she calls it—that's right she actually loving says "I've gone hikkikomori"—who rages against the bourgeoisie and refuses to be part of that lifestyle.

I kind of like the three episodes I've seen, if I'm being honest. But there's not a single character worth rooting for, and I suspect most people will hate themselves for even considering it.

The tribulations of Disney's relationship with ABC was one of my favourite parts of DisneyWar.

Michael Eisner was so sure that Who Wants To Be a Millionaire would be an evergreen hit for ABC that he turned down CSI and Survivor, among other things.

It's such a great book.

Eisner: The moment you think I'm getting to be a liability, tell me and I'll go.
Disney: We think you're getting to be a liability and should resign like you said.

Lipstick Apathy
Halt & Catch Fire is such a great show but they've handled two things extremely deftly this season (spoilers cuz there isn't a thread): Donna being a probable alcoholic and Haley being gay. I rewatched the season and Donna's behavior combined with her drinking in like every scene where she wasn't at work was extremely subtle, and the scene with Haley & the restaurant worker in episode 2 seemed like just a way to tie her into the story but ended up being so much more, and Lee Pace did such a loving fantastic job as Joe both recognizing what was going on at lunch and also respecting her right to privacy when Gordon lashed out at him God I love this show

I'm not sure who comes off worse, Eisner or Katzenberg. I think it's pretty much a dead heat.

The entire saga where Eisner was stubbornly convinced that Michael Ovitz - who'd founded the CAA and by 1995 was Hollywood's most powerful talent agent - was the ideal choice to replace Frank Wells as President of Disney was so frustrating to read.

He had everyone else in the company saying, "This is a bad idea and he's not cut out for it," but forged ahead until he finally got him appointed, then immediately decided he'd made a mistake (despite promising him unqualified support) and spent a year trying to undermine him at every turn until he resigned with a severance package so ridiculously over-generous Disney was sued over it by its own shareholders.

I wish the author would put out a new appendix or epilogue or update looking at where Disney and Eisner have gone in the past 10 years since he was forced out.

Amazon has announced three new adaptations. Lazarus based on the comic by Greg Rucka which takes place in a dystopic future where the world is divided by 16 families with the main character being a "Lazarus" which is the name of a clan's one person kill squad. Ringworld based on the novel series by Larry Niven which follows a group of hired explores onto an alien superstructure. Finally they're also working on Snow Crash the classic cyberpunk novel which predicted a lot of internet culture in the early 90s

The biggest question mark is probably Ringworld because while it has an interesting setting it doesn't really have a strong overarching story. Maybe they could use it to spin off into a series that is just adaptations of Known Space stories?

Edit: I tried to wade into the Orville thread and hoo boy do you have some dumbs in there. McFarlane sure is a poo poo-fly attractant.

Also about the Hulu app, it's a perfect example of engineers being told to make it "look prettier" with zero concern with functionality. It's pretty bad.

I'm pretty sure now that there's an economic incentive to make this stuff less functional. You don't want the viewer looking at the whole catalog- you want them looking at the stuff you want them to look at, because it's an original or you paid a lot to get the rights for it. It's the same with how bookstores decide what gets the fancy displays close to the entrance and what's just stuck on the shelf.

And Hulu doesn't have an Instant Watcher equivalent (though I can't be sure I'm not seeing their entire movie library through the app, they seemed to lose EVERYTHING when Filmstruck started, not just the Criterions.)

At this point I may just be keeping it to finish off the original Outer Limits.

I got bored waiting for the new Good Place to hit Hulu and watched the season 9 (holy crap) premiere of Modern Family. I've watched a few eps of each of the past few seasons, formula is the same but it's still a really enjoyable cast. Kinda like latter-day Cheers in that way, it's just comforting.

Kinda amazing that Sarah Hyland is like 30+ and still looks 19 tho

Not only that, NBC renewed it for a second season before airing anything.

I kinda want to see what happens if it turns out to be a ratings disaster but it's NBC so who the gently caress would notice
