Speaking of sleeping, apparently people used to sleep twice in a night... you see references to 'first sleep' or 'second sleep' commonly in literature. It seems this might be a thing that people used to do, sleep for 4-6hrs upon nightfall, wake up to stoke the fire, sleep again until sunrise.
