I live in central New Jersey, and there was a "Hindus for Trump" event during the campaign. A lot of them love Modi too. And they hate Muslims. Granted, Indian Americans in the area overwhelmingly voted for Hillary, but there's always been a large strand of Respectability Politics among first generation Asian American immigrants, even when we're not talking about the "escaped from communism" crowd. And some of their male children grew up bitter believing they were overlooked in affirmative action and identity politics, which makes rebelling against liberal orthodoxy more tempting.

(I'm all for rebelling against liberal orthodoxy... but go left!)

At least I can rest a bit easy knowing that Asian American men, as whole, did not vote for Trump, unlike whitewomenvotedfortrump.jpg.

The response to "Asians do better than whites explain that libtards" I've heard is that actually, Asians were doing terribly, but white people became less racist over time, and Asians were able to improve their lot. I.e. the Asian history in the US is more like proof that systemic racism is real and easing it is important.

Though even then, anti-blackness is a special case in the US and nothing really compares to it.

And generally when people take a situation. and swap a race or gender and expect the result to be the same, their argument is probably stupid.

There's also the fact that 'Asian' doesn't refer to a homogenous demographic. When people talk about how well off Asians are, it's my understanding they're usually referencing well-to-do Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and maybe even Indian immigrants. I imagine if you break the demographics down more finely, that picture of the 'model minority doing better than whites' starts breaking down.

Rich Evans disliked it a lot and he's a big ST fan. He pretty much got around to saying it feels like it wants to be Star Wars but it's not adventurous and exciting, but it just doesn't much feel like Star Trek either.

Tim Wise may have many faults, but his books are reasonably well documented (at least it seems so; of course I only ever "followed" like 5% of his sources and never actually tried to fact-check his whole book because I have things to do with my time). In his book Colourblind he presents actual data indicating that yeah, the average person of Chinese descent (as an example) in the States definitely does better than the average white person, but that is to a great extent because the average Chinese person will be more educated (which itself is to a great extent a consequence of selective migration). When you compare the groups of equal education, the advantage is flipped. The average American-born caucasian person with a PhD will have more wealth and more income than even a 2nd gen Chinese immigrant with a PhD.

I enjoyed it, despite its flaws, which it does have, but I'm not a Trekie, so there might have been more bugbears I didn't key into. I think for me the most disappointing thing was that I felt they could have done a better job of trying to make the appearance of the technology and styling more believable of being just 10 years prior to TOS. I realize that's' a tall order, but I think they could have gotten closer. It looks and feels almost more like the reboot.

It's okay. My main complaint is that the first two episodes are more akin to an introductory mini-series before a season starts than the first two episodes of a season - the starship of the title hasn't even made her appearance yet. Other complaints boil down to it not being Star Trekky enough, which I've always found to be a nebulous concept at best anyways. It certainly has the budget and the talent to turn into something okay into something really good when the actual Discovery comes along.

THis is proof that Youtube knows just what the gently caress they are doing and wan't chaos. They are sending a clear message: We not only want you to not get paid by ads, we don't want you getting paid at all. All so they don't have to actually moderate and police their own site.

A sceptic conference hosted by the Milwaukee Mythicists (Mythinformation Conference ) has decided to host some of the worst possible people to attend as speakers. Armoured Skeptic and Shoeonhead are there (not entirely uncontroversial but neither of them are experts in areas that would normally warrant speaking at a conference). More controversially, Sargon is there as a speaker whose "channel is dedicated to rational arguments backed by evidence". Apparently they have never met him, nor heard him speak, nor realised he has crippling allergies to research and effort.

And hot off the press, they've decided to also host Amos Yee, noted fan of child pornography.

Youtube has two major problems (ok, it has many, but there are the relevant ones here):
1) Copyright strikes from overzealous copyright holders and copyright squatters (that are almost impossible to resolve if you're just some poor channel with 10K followers)
2) Haphazard demonitization due to their ad sponsors getting spooked by all the Nazi and anti-Nazi content (they demonitize pro-LGBT videos, for example)

Youtubers basically cam up with a workaround.
1) You can purposefully content-lock your video by using several pieces of media from two major corporations. When the corporations both copyright lock your video, they have to fight it out, not you. This may have been pioneered/popularized by Jim Sterling (thank god for him, etc, etc)
2) Video-makers simply directed their users to their Patreon sites and left their video unmonetized. It's how people like Jim Sterling can review games in a relatively harassment-free way. If you were a real poo poo, you would probably direct your subs to hatreon or whatever.

Anyway, this began to cut into Youtube's profits, so they nuked this workaround. Thanks Youtube.
