My contribution to book chat: If you're going to read Murakami just skip Underground or at least be prepared for it to be both shocking and highly repetitive. Read the first third of the book and then skip to the cult interviews, those are much more interesting. Modern Romance was great. Seconding that one. Banana: The fate of the fruit that changed the world is an amazing history of the banana and it's outsized effect on both the USA and central America. If you want the nitty gritty of why/how the term "banana republic" got coined, here you go. Fun fact, refrigerated shipping was invented to ship bananas. Anything by Mary Roach, seriously anything. Personal favorite is either Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal or Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War She's got a knack for finding the strangest stories and relaying them with a great dry humor. If you want a very easy to approach discussion of the problems with poor implementation of data science I can't recommend enough Weapons of Math Destruction. It's incredible. And a personal favorite Botany of Desire . Michael Pollan is super famous for a lot of his later books and I love them but this one I adore. It's a very in depth look at 4 plants and how they shaped society and culture around them. Those plants are the apple, the potato, marijuana, and tulips. Love love love this book. Honestly my favorite bit is right when the Yamato shows up and opens fire on the destroyer escorts*. The American admiral orders "all small boys attack" and they loving go I think of that whenever I hear "Don't Tread On Me" *small, weak, and slow destroyers too awful for battle fleet use so they're relegated to support roles OH poo poo Another good WW2 Pacific book that dives very deeply into the Japanese side: Shattered Sword. It's basically about Midway but goes into a lot background with respect to politics, culture and economy. A huge upgrade from the solely American perspective you'd usually see in these kinda books I also just started reading Meditations by Marcus Aerilus and it's been interesting so far. Hasn't grabbed me by the balls but makes for a nice work break

I just got the idea that if I was in charge of sound for an NFL game, if the other team was in a place where they could just kneel it out to end the game because of lack of timeouts, I would just play the anthem continuously to see if the QB would actually take a knee.

You go sign up, tell them your preferences, what books you've read, etc. Every day (or week, depending on how you set it up) they send you recommendations based on your preferences. They only send you books on sale, though. I don't think I've seen a single one over $1.99. I've wound up reading some really random and good stuff because of BookBub.
