i just think it's kind of cute watching art styles fluctuate when you can read through a webcomic's archive and guess what they were watching/reading at any given point

SU goes off model in ways that are very unpleasant. Like, sometimes Steven and Amethyst are two feet tall for a whole episode, it's very strange.

One of the big criticisms of a lot of those cartoons including SU and OKKO is that sometimes the animation is really off-model, like just criminally bad.

I've never noticed the off-model stuff, and honestly don't see what the big deal is? Like the only thing people say is that it's "unprofessional" but the rationale seems perfectly reasonable. It's only obsessive weirdos who are gonna be comparing relative heights across episodes anyway.

Relative size is a handy visual cue that helps viewers tell characters apart without relying overly on the limited pool of consistent signature differences you care to adhere to (this is the Only Red Guy in my show. nobody else can ever wear red or they'll be indistinguishable from the Red Guy), and is absolutely vital to giving a sense of spatial relations in a 2D medium. This may be less of a big deal in a series where everyone is Red Triangle Guy or Blue Oval Girl and they all just sit around in a void talking forever (I've never watched Steven Universe and never will) A Wizard of Goatse fucked around with this message at 00:57 on Sep 30, 2017 |

That'd be kind of relevant to giving a sense of scale! A skyscraper is much taller than two houses, and anything that huge will tend to kind of define any form of surrounding space (which is presumably also very large!) and be a major reference point by which people understand it and interpret movement through it, whether or not they're both also bigger than a person. If a townhouse is just a bit bigger than an airplane next to it, OK, you're looking at a 747. If the Empire State Building is just a bit bigger than the airplane next to it, I guess you're looking at some kind of bizarre scientologist end-of-the-world event

Personally I've got no beef with it changing, but I cut my teeth on Loony Tunes reruns and well :

I find a lot of complaining about storyboard-driven cartoons going "off model" to be really dumb and boring. Loose character designs are not goofs or errors; very few shows have rigid character "models" like Family Guy and part of what makes a lot of shows fun is watching boarders take artistic liberties with a design for artistic effect. Also it sucks that so many webcomic artists are ripping off Steven Universe, because most of their attempts to copy that style look super toothless and bland because of all the rounded edges and pastel colors. IMO, even a lot of webcomic artists who have worked on that show lack the sense of roughness and texture that Rebecca Sugar's own drawings have.

super sweet best pal posted:Instead it's being done poorly by people like Aaron Diaz who mostly just slaps some rectangles on the side of a building and calls it good. No, see, this is it. This is people "bringing back" Art Deco. It's only ever going to be soulless poo poo* because it's pandering to nostalgia for an isolated aspect of a particular snapshot of history, without regard to everything that caused that art style to emerge and be accepted at that time. See also Michael Bublé, the Aaron Diaz of Swing. *you mention the '90s batman cartoon, but that wasn't a revival of Art Deco aesthetics, it was a full on noir crime drama, but with batman, and not actually chronologically set in the early 20th century (though you'll notice it wasn't really set in any other real time period either). Dresden Codak hosed up because its application of visual aesthetic is, as you note, paper thin. The whole thing could be set on a zeerusted spaceship straight out of The Jetsons and it wouldn't make any substantive difference to the story, or even to the feeling of the environments he creates.

The key difference there is detail; Cucumber Quest has much more depth to its visuals due to being a still comic, while the SU knockoffs being complained about just copy the flat colouring style without realising that being animated is what makes up for it.
