It's finished. I played the game live for 6 hours straight. And I still didn't cover even 50% of the features :negative:

My problem with it isn't entirely nitpicky, like how they messed with the Klingons, all the lens flare, goofy sideways camera angles, holo communication way before it was first invented in ds9, or all the design cues from JJ Trek even though it's supposed to be in the prime universe. I can get over all that. It's the acting (like Sandi level bad), and the dialog. It was terrible. And the pacing, omg, all the Klingon scenes putting me to sleep because they talk so god damned slow. Then there's the Michael character, I dunno what to think of because she's supposed to have grown up on Vulcan, and in the flashback she acts all super logical, and then all that rationality goes out the window when she tries to neck pinch the captain and usurp command. It's all very disjointed imo.

Unsinkable
In honor of the accomplishment of Universal Combat, I decided to play Universal Combat.

This is my adventure.

First off, let's do this poo poo.

Good deal, I now have an icon on my desktop. Not sure what it is supposed to be of...

So it boots up. In like 1024x768. So... change the resolution! Not a loving pro-

OK! Changing resolution is a bad idea! It's ok. We can still do this thing!

So next step, time to pick ROAM, ACM, or INSTANT ACTION. I think ROAM sounds good. Let's do it.

I get to pick lots of classes, and characters, AND UC has a female character! Woohooo! Finally I can be a bald spaceman in space with tits!

Also I can pick lots of careers! Hello Paramedic! Eat your loving heart out, Star Citizen!

I select the tutorial mission. Sweet! A tutorial!!!

So stare at this for a while. I'm not sure what to do.

I guess I must land on the red planet. FORWARDS TO THE PLANET!!!

So I fly towards the planet for a long time.

Come on planet!! COME TO MAMA!!! THERE ARE PEOPLE IN NEED OF MY MEDICINE DOWN THERE!!!

I'm starting to believe I will never get to the planet. I shoot at the planet. It was looking hostile because it was red. My lasers make the controller vibrate.

So nothing happens. And I spin around, looking for the apparent target, after I think launching some fighters. AND THERE IT IS!! THE HOSTILE BATTLECRUISER WAS FOLLOWING ME ALL ALONG!!!

It is now war. Unconsensual PvP between me and them. My fighters see nothing wrong.

The screen wiggles with orgasmic bliss as I am hit!

And then it turns red, which I think is bad. But SURELY my TUTORIAL battlecruiser can defeat this FIRST enemy!

All the things get damaged. This battle goes on for a very long time, where in we slowly turn and face each other, and exchange laser blasts, and slowly pass each other to do it over again. Except my ship feels sluggish and weird, like it is a shopping cart with one wheel broken.

I am losing the tutorial battle. :(

My fighter force still thinks nothing is wrong. :(

Even when I'm not being hit, all the things are still constantly broken.

I have lost. I decide it is time to just watch myself die so I go to third person to watch my ship die. Apparently when I do this I also leave the ship. Third person may actually still be first person, and I as the CAPTAIN PARAMEDIC OF THE FLEET am just out in space eating a sandwich or something.

Just as I think I am about to die, something happens. The enemy ship stops killing me as there is a malfunction.

I stay like this for a while, not able to move. I return to my ship, sure enough everything has malfunctioned. Apparently I malfunctioned SO BADLY I also broke the enemy ship, who just stopped dead in it's tracks and just sat there, as if waiting for my space air to run out before I die.

I figure this is the end. I hit escape, time to quit.

Oh no, there is no escape menu. YOU CANNOT LEAVE UNIVERSAL COMBAT, CITIZEN!

I Control-Alt-Deleted up the Task Manager and had to kill it.

10/10 Star Citizen has nothing on this

Backers who do understand game dev are long gone, because they know what's up. The only devs left in the backer (cess)pool are guys who make banking software and other database stuff and claim to know how production methodologies and development works in games.

No, I reckon most "potential" backers who worked in the financial systems industry heard Roberts' idiotic initial project plan, sized it up as bullshit right away, and steered clear. I mean, that sales pitch. Multiple teams/contractors developing modules in parallel, then slotting them together to make an integrated product? Sure, there are established ways to do that - it's a pretty commonplace project approach, after all.

But they hosed it up right at the start. Star Citizen was easy to classify as doomed/hosed/development-hell/comedy-fail/textbook-how-not-to-do-it. CIG broke the most basic rule, right from the get-go...

DO:
- Write a detailed functional spec for each module, and for the interactions between each module.

DONT:
- Let any team start coding their module until the functional specs are done.

CIG didn't go away into squirrel mode, into back rooms, planning their poo poo, nailing down their project. They didn't speak once on the boring but vital work being done, hammering together boring docs. No, they were OFF AND RUNNING, developing! So exciting! So marketable! So impossible to build into one cohesive product without proper advance planning!

Note: We're talking 2012/2013 here. At the time, CIG's end product pretty much involved a pilot-focused spaceflight module, a "landing zone FPS" module and a "boarding FPS" module". It was abundantly clear then that those modules wouldn't come together if they were going to be cowboys about doing it seat-of-the-pants.

True to form, they went off the rails, making the spaceflight module suddenly involving non-pilot focused gameplay - passenger, flight attendant, crew member doing turrets, repairs. Huge spec change, on-the-fly.

Even back then, it wasn't like CIG was trying to get a 100% free-walk spaceflight environment seamlessly integrated with atmospheric reentry, planetary landings, exploring on foot and in wheeled/hovering vehicles, orbital mechanics and day/night cycles.

How much poo poo has this company written and then discarded, all because they had (have) no development documentation discipline?

what the gently caress are these guys talking about on atv

"hmm you know video games? its not like real life! I know, its kinda crazy. so you need to use a different language to communicate what you want the game to do because its run on a computer. amazing stuff! never been done before"

I mean what the gently caress, this is an actual loving quote

quote:

With CitizenCon, there was some request that we didn't see coming, such as older repair and maintenance interaction aboard an Idris, for example. Meaning, you have to take components out of certain parts of the ship, inspect them, replace them, carry them around, and all that was not ready um, the first time we tried to do all that. Andddd so, basically, what we realized, is that the system has to be request based and be able to kind of cater to all those new requests that were coming in. So we created a whole process where people can actually request usables. We created a way to basically categorize those requests, and, you know, identify where what were stuff that we could already do and, um, I would go through the pipeline easily and stuff that we actually had to build some tech for. And coming out of CitizenCon there was a lot of stuff that we needed tech for. So once to start, the, the, the team was actually created it was really easily to pick from those and actually just go in here "Okay, let's, let's lift that blocker, let's lift that blocker, let's lift that blocker" and just...go for it.
WHAT THE gently caress DOES ANY OF THIS MEAN

also never say loving "basically" that much, it means you have no idea what the gently caress you are talking about (I was schooled on this years ago and it basically stuck with me)

Obviously, he must be talking about some unexpected system requirement because Individual ship components damage states has been core to the idea of Star Citizen since day one.
2012 Chris: "SC is designed to have a level of detail on individual ships like not other space game done to date - each fighter has something like 100-300 parts, most of which that have individual damaged versions and can break off. Its also not just visual, losing or damaging parts affects how you fly, what systems work and so on."

Don't try to tell me Chris hasn't documented his dreams somewhere every dev can see it, CIG cuntiflas!
