🥄Mah spoon is too big!🍌
Now that I've completed it, another few things from Metal Gear Rising:

I love how after 3 bossfights of escalating levels of ridiculous bullshit (Fighting a 10-armed femme fatale while being swarmed by robots, killing a meme-obsessed nihilistic edgelord who throws tanks at you, and dispatching a warmongering sadist armed with a set of jumbo-sized shears who beats you with 30 foot lengths of piping while helicopters circle overhead and machinegun you), you're then faced with Jetstream Sam. Sam is arguably the only one of the antagonists who doesn't take almost cartoonish levels of glee in killing civilians and popping orphan kids' heads open to use their brains in combat machines, and who has doubts about what they're doing. So the fight between you two is something like a cross between a Samurai film and a duel in an old Western (complete with a stray tumbleweed): no gimmicks, no minor enemies intervening, just two dudes with swords going at each other, and it makes the fight that much cooler as a result.

The Armstrong fight at the end has a bunch.

There's the moment that you realize that you're fighting a Nanomachine-fuelled Donald Rumsfeld.

There's the bit where he kicks a field goal with you, complete with an audio sting of a cheering sports crowd.

Also, through the entire game there have been 3 or 4 instances where Raiden has had a very near miss with an enemy sword, or chainsaw, or helicopter blade coming close to decapitating him, and in each instance sending out a shower of sparks as it glances off his (cybernetic) chin. In the Armstrong fight there's a bit where he takes a punch at you causing another near miss, and if you look closely you can see that the only reason he's not managed to scrape you like in all of the previous instances is that Raiden wiggles his jaw backwards as he ducks under the punch. The happy little smile he gives afterwards is amazing. Watch the first 45 seconds of this to see what I'm talking about.

MGR is a video game that is completely unashamed of being a video game and it willingly leans in to how ridiculous it is, and it is the better for it.

Exactly. The - heh - half assed metaphors and art the fandom come up with for what's intended and presented as fan service is pretty goddamn embarrassing, especially when you don't see that same sort scrambling elsewhere.

Tits and rear end are sometimes just that. You don't need to pretend theyre about elevating the platform, or whatever bollocks you throw together. Larva Crofts tits weren't insight into themes and backstory, and that's fine.

Don't take this poo poo so personally Somfin.. You don't have to bend over backwards to justify your lust for rear end.

Since it came up in the past few pages, Steamworld Dig is currently free on Origin (I know I know ugh) and its a fantastic little game. Didn't even know there was a sequel!

Also I've been playing Just Cause 3 and one of the standard items you have to destroy to liberate areas is a projector which projects propaganda onto a big screen. I got curious how they actually did it though so I hooked one up to my car and was presently surprised the projection is actually rendered separately and not just an image tied to the screen. As you pull the projector away the image lowers in perfect real-time off the screen. Means nothing to gameplay but I appreciate that level of detail in modeling and rendering rather than using a cheap shortcut.

Point is you're getting weirdly defensive about costumes the creator said came about due to his love of rear end and titties. He even made a cheeky set of tweets soliciting porn that was made in response to it.

All this drivel about having deep meaning, and the comparisons to classical art, is ridiculous. Fan justification for titillation doesn't elevate it: Lara Croft doesn't have tits that represent a burgeoning career, she just has big tits the development team found funny after a slider scale error.

Feel free to put down the pom poms and tell us you're favourite little things about computer games, friend.

So there's a Nioh mission called The Grand Tournament that has you fighting 100 opponents one after the other, and when you beat one they're instantly replaced - a few spawn in groups but, again, the next lot come in before the first are completely beaten. It's a frantic juggle of resource management, battling and conserving your abilities.

What I really love about it though is how a ton of human opponents from the main game return here, but they're not nerfed in any way. You're cutting through everything that was once a massive challenge and these guys are barely road bumps now.

A running theme in the DLC is far you've come, but that stuff really cements it.

In Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel you have to go through a customs check to get into Concordia, the first hub city of the game; 4 of 6 characters cuss at the guard and get detained for violating a verbal morality statute. The other two still get detained, one for speaking French and confusing the guard, and the other for saying "mother-trucker" and still getting arrested. I've just completed the Dolce de Postcard substories for Kiryu and Majima in Yakuza 0 and appreciated some of the little moments in both of their paths. I liked that Kiryu totally comes across like "hah this is so stupid I'm doing this ironically for reals" in order to protect his machismo, it's a funny little quirk of his character.

But I was pleasantly surprised as Majima to hear Kiryu's name get called a couple times on the radio. It was a little touch that helped sell the idea that the two protagonists are moving parallel to one another.

Also "Judgement Kazzy" is a fantastic pen name.

He's gone on record saying that he likes pretty girls. And the game's story is based on a stage play he wrote for an idol group that he created, which is where the name of the main android organisation comes from, as well as a bunch of design elements (and probably the proportions of the androids). And his writing philosophy is to start with the final image and make every part of it as meaningful as possible. And he's famously evasive and playful during interviews.

So yeah, basically what he said is it's meaningless and anyone looking for meaning in it is clearly autistic.

Having a game run at your resolution/aspect ratio/framerate of choice and not run like garbage compared to other similar titles from the same console is like the bare minimum you can expect from a PC port and they hosed that up. People react poorly because it's a sign of incompetence and/or laziness when a professional publisher can't provide basic functionality that a single modder with no access to the source code can mod in the day after the game comes out; even if you can't do it yourself, give Durante a call and pay him to get it working for you or something.

My computer's specs massively outstrip any console on the market, I feel like having it render at a steady FPS (whether it be 30 or 60) at a resolution native to my monitor (i.e. 1920x1080 since that's been the standard for several years) is the absolute barest loving minimum for a AAA-produced game released on PC. Automata's port is so bad you need to install a 3rd-party mod just to get the goddamned cutscenes to render in the resolution you selected for the rest of the game at 30 FPS, regardless of system specs. It's not a question of "maximum distance the grass will render at" or something similarly asinine. And woe betide you if your computer has the wrong astrological sign because the game just might not function no matter what!

It's not insanity -- I still spent $40 on the loving game and "bare competency" is a fair expectation for that price tag. Especially since these games run just fine on the PS4 and Xbone [when applicable].

In general it's that people, both dev and consumer, underestimate how much coding work goes into implementing graphical efficiency. Shadow of Mordor looks amazing on a potato, N:A struggles on a 1080. It's a priority that is either central to how the game is made or an afterthought that barely works.

Also there's that block of Total Biscuit fans that cargo cult specific settings and benchmarks and think that higher graphical fidelity is just a thing that devs either turn on or forget to turn on. Like, blacklisting Undertale for not running at 60fps.

If you've never read Durante's blog posts about working on XSEED's PC ports they are absolutely worth a read. He makes everything pretty accessible and shows how even when something originated on a non-x86 platform all it takes to go from a garbage port to a great one is a willingness to hire someone who knows what they're doing and a little time.

Goalposts are shifting more and more too with what counts as a good PC port -- we're not super far from when games like Resident Evil 4 were shipped without a lighting engine when they got ported to PC and yet Dark Souls gets poo poo for being 'a godawful port' when it's basically identical to the console version (and even might be considered the best version of the game even unmodded, since it runs better in places like Blighttown than on consoles.) IMO, being identical to the console version should be baseline decent, with stuff like higher resolution/fps being an improvement.

(this is on topic because the original RE4 port is genuinely one of my favorite things, since it's just hilariously bad:
