Manitoba PCs took a record amount of money out of Manitoba Hydro through water rentals(6% - 2017 vs 5% - 2016 of rev.), capital taxes(6% - 2017 vs 5% - 2016 of rev.) and 'debt guarantees' (5% - 2017 vs 4% - 2016 of rev.) and didn't have the Crown Corporation put any extra money aside or towards the massive debt problem they claim Hydro has. They are going to balance the budget through tripling Hydro rates then sell it off to the highest bidder.

The parts of rural Ontario that vote Conservative are very different than the NDP-voting northern rural areas of the province. It's not the same kind of rural, and I don't think any dipper was going to make serious inroads in cottage country or the farmlands. Too much money there.

As far as Quebec is concerned, we shouldn't make too many assumptions at this time. Remember that the Trudeau name used to be very toxic in Quebec. https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2017/09/22/if-jagmeet-singh-wins-the-ndp-leadership-dont-assume-he-will-be-rejected-in-quebec-hbert.html

EvidenceBasedQuack posted:I couldn't believe what I read about the vote in Catalonia What about it? From my very brief reading of it, the regional government tried to hold a referendum not supported by national law, local opposition parties abstained and called on people to boycott the vote, national police tried to prevent it from happening, and sure 90% voted for separation, but turnout was only 40% which, combined with the boycott calls probably means only the 'separate' side turned out at all. The police brutality sucks of course, but none of this is surprising. PittTheElder fucked around with this message at 21:45 on Oct 2, 2017 |

You forgot the part about Brian Pallister becoming a board chairman and then his wife becoming Lieutenant Governor. Sorry for the spoilers, but I'm old enough to have seen the original before this remake started.

Is there anyway way to see how much stock the Filmons had in MTS when it was sold to Bell? Is that public information?

Rural Ontario will love jagmeet, that guy is just dripping with sweet toxic masculinity. Side note, it's neat that our PM is 45 and the leaders of the major two opposition parties are in their 30s. Maybe boomers just won't vote next election.

The Spanish government could have called the referendum bullshit and leave it at that. Instead, police and military forces used violence to prevent voting, raided polling stations, randomized seized ballot boxes. That the referendum was not considered legal in Spain or that opposition parties refused to participate do not justify the violence. Hence my reaction.

I'm disappointed that the left wing of the NDP couldn't find a more compelling candidate to coalesce around than Nikki Ashton.

I picked Ashton because as lame as her campaign was, it had a bunch of ideas I really liked the sound of and want to hear more about in our politics. I'm sick of voting for the NDP just because they're the only other option. I'm not surprised she didn't win but I'm disappointed the party lined up behind a dude that seems to ooze the same kind of stand for nothing empty platitudes we got from the last two assholes who ran the joint into the ground
