Look at what happened with the recall elections in Colorado a few years ago. Most Americans support at least 'common sense' gun regulation but it's far from their top concern. The 10% or whatever that oppose it have their entire identity centered on guns and will do everything in their power politically to ensure gun laws stay the same or are weakened.
