At this point, this is exactly what I would like to see. I'm really tired of watching Elite being just on the edge of being a great game with mass appeal, and keeps slipping into grognard "hardcore" tropes. I can only imagine if all the CG's fail, the thargoids take over the bubble, and Braben throws a hitler-in-his-bunker style tantrum that the players ruined his storyline. WebDog posted:Sure they'll lose the hardcore fans but gain a more consistent playerbase. It seems that their hardcore fans want it this way. The problem with Elite as a MMO is there's no home base or central area for everyone. The human bubble is HUGE and there's literally thousands of space stations, each of which is practically self-sustaining. There's no mechanism to encourage players to converge in any specific area. Weekly CGs partially fill that role but they can be hundreds of LYs apart from week to week, and are tailored to specific gameplay such as trade / bounty hunting.

True, but I think joining the DF helps this a bit. We have a home and have unguided fun just using our imagination. It's not the same as a built in system of really claiming space, but it works and it's fun. I feel most complaints about Elite can be solved with two solutions: 1. Stop playing Elite to earn money and get bigger ships. 2. Join Diamond Frogs. And 3. Get VR. Even mining is interesting when everything is 1.1 scale with you.

I bought this game recently for the PS4, it took 9 hours to install and I made the mistake of trying to travel to a system that ended up being about 1.4 days away. I don't know whether to love it or hate it, but I would appreciate some pointers. At this point I'm just trying to earn credits for a ship upgrade by trading & running missions.

Maybe it's not the same for PS4, but aren't there a series of tutorials in the main menu to teach the basic flight mechanics? Also, look up "obsidianant" on YouTube. Probably the most informative place to learn about Elite and he does make video specially for the PS4 version.

You can jump to that star! Also, if you try to fly there in supercruise/newtonian you will never reach it. Well, technically you would, and could do a 0-fuel "jump" to get there, but hyperspace is the loading screen which loads the next system. I did and it was strange, my speed kept accelerating and I ended up going over 1,300 c (whatever c stands for, like I said I just started and am not familiar with all the terminology). Anyway, I'm probably close to my first ship upgrade, is there a recommendation? Cobra Mk. III, Asp, Hauler?

I moved from Sidewinder to Asp. Cobra is better though.

The Cobra is an awesome ship and my favorite to fly. The Asp is effectively a bigger Cobra but it sits just at the point where ships gets a bit too sluggish to maneuver. For me at least The Hauler is Elite's version of that beat up '97 Corolla that your awkward uncle insists on driving because it has soul. The Hauler doesn't have a soul as much as it has a screeching banshee masquerading as engine noise.

I confused Adder with Asp there. Asp's are a big price jump up from the first few ships. Definitely go with Cobra as your next ship if it's a choice between the three you mentioned and even if you made the same mistake and said Asp when you meant Adder. Hauler sounds cool as gently caress though.

This particular app uses the oculus sdk for the overlay so it's VR only. I don't know of a non-vr thing other than just running in windowed mode or using a 2nd monitor

Man the salt is out with the new patch. Thargoids are adapting tactics, which is pretty cool, but gamers are pissed that the missiles have been nerfed to give the illusion of being less effective. Plus the fact the big update is a week old so players are getting left behind as they can't really gear up / afford to fight. One drawback of The Return is that it appears to be targeting top end players who can actively participate vs providing new features like multi/fighters.

"Thargoids are adapting" is the official story, but no one believes it. Maybe it was FDev's intention all along, but their way of handling it, their tradition buggy patches, and history giving the playerbase the finger, it doesn't really matter anymore. Perception is reality, and FDev hosed up again.

I'm still catching up on this thread, but I got in on the exploit this last weekend to get myself a bunch of money. I finally finished the grind for my Cutter tonight, and I think I'd like to kit it out to do some multicrew stuff with my 2 friends who have the game. I'd love someone more knowledgeable than me to show me what I should aim for on it. I'm never sure what types of weapons to put in which slot, which ones I should turret for a gunner, all that stuff. Probably an important note, I don't have much engineering stuff unlocked yet. That'll probably be my next thing I work on slowly. So just something we can dick around in doing some pve that doesn't require much, if any, engineering.

Something like this should be fine for PvE https://eddp.co/u/jpAWHhcH I've got mine engineered and do things slightly differently but the shield tank on this thing makes PvE trivial. Just change the guns to whatever flavour you like. I have the cores A rated but you can get away with lower on most if you can't afford those. Primary focus should be on the power plant if you have to pick. This thing turns like a brick so having everything at least gimballed is important. For fighters I'd suggest either the gu-97 with fixed beams (gelid f) (good for most things) or the f63 condor with fixed multicannons (rogue f) (great for bigger ships).

I'm kind of a rookie explorer who hasn't mastered identifying the planetary sounds in the system map so I decided to cheat. Nothing is more disappointing than flying 200,000ls across a system only to find that you've just discovered another High Metal Content world. If you want to cheat too, here is how. What we're going to do is look at the OS level and see what sound the game is loading from disk when we hover over the planet in the system map. For that, we just need Microsoft / Sysinternal's Process Monitor. Run this and then add the following filters: code:
Here's a list of all the planet types I've surveyed, but really all you need to look for is the millions place and 22=Water world, 35=Earth-like, 93=Ammonia world. Note that terraformable worlds have the same sounds as regular ones, so there is no way to tell from the sound if a high metal content world is worth scanning. code:
Can you get in trouble for running this? No. This is not like many cheats, where it gets inside the process and reads data or detours important functions to collect information. This creates a file system driver in the operating system that all I/O requests pass through (network, registry, files, pipes, etc) so it is completely non-invasive. It is like having task manager open. CapnBry fucked around with this message at 13:25 on Oct 5, 2017 |

It's interesting, but I don't really see the purpose beyond making money faster -and if you want to do that, you could just do something else to get money even faster. Maybe even use a cheat to get money even faster in this other profession. But I'm apparently not the right audience for this, since I tend to play Elite with Fake 80s Electro Funk playing in the background at full blast, ignoring all audio cues 90% of the time.
