Yes, we now leave on the local classical radio statio (we actually stream it online through our tv speakers, go technology). I used to leave just the regular pop radio station on, which is probably why Pearl loves Taylor Swift. You can't change the early influences, despite my husband insisting on *years now* of classical, Pearl still can't carry a tune but will happily bop along to any beat.

Random question I've not wanted to ask: What would you guys feel is a minimum safe distance for running a hookah in a house with birds? It's been sitting in a closet from the moment they arrived in the household and I'd like to use it again if a room away+fans would be sufficient buffer, otherwise I guess I'll be looking at windproofing it for outside use?

Also, on cages: http://www.kingscages.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=SLFXL%203221 would these be overkill to get one each for a cockatiel and conure? The current setups feel stately temporary.

I'll be sure to grab some cute pictures later for the dumb questions!

Are you able to just do it in a different room where you can close the door between the birds and the smoke, especially if you've got a window for the smoke to go out of it should be ok.

I wouldn't recommend doing it in the same room.

I've smoked just a few feet away from my birds--but with a closed glass door between us, as they were playing on their rope ladder in the sunroom and I was on the balcony. Otherwise I smoke downstairs while their cages are upstairs.

Scout was back at the vet today and Lily the Yellow Crowned Amazon was still there. We were walking around talking to the birds, and she was just chilling and snoozing. I was crouched down and asking her how she was doing when she quietly whispered "Hi." It was so goddamn adorable. I got her to say it a few times more by whispering it back to her and it was it was just so :3:

I'm still living at home (still at university, planning to move out next year when I graduate) and my mum has been staunchly opposed to me getting a bird until I move out, so out of respect etc. I've abstained. She's in Queensland visiting her partner at the moment, and she just sent me a picture of herself with a pineapple conure, after having met a breeder at a market. She said the blue mutations were her favourite, and the birds were super affectionate and well-behaved. Is this... is this how victory begins?

Minimum planned distance was at least a room a way, it's all lovely interior doors and the airgap is only a few meters. If indoors were to happen we'd probably be stuffing towels or something under a door as both rooms are near the air handler.

I buy them from pet stores so I am always ripped off. Either that or op shops (Salvos are evil but they are good for cheap furniture) or free from rellos.

I'll try some local op shops but I'm a little paranoid about used bird stuff. Usually my cages end up rusting from the inside out and all of a sudden I'll have a big hole in the frame. This time it's outside in, so I have time to wait and find something I really like.

Out of interest - are there any bird breeders in the thread? Not going to start myself (at least, not yet) but wanted to ask some questions about what kind of notes breeders keep, for a project - as a software dev I was going to build something to learn a couple of new technologies and thought I'd use an idea I had a little while back.

Basically when I was buying my Senegal I was considering a couple of other species but finding parrot breeders is a pain (since many advertise in various disparate places or are listed online with just an email address that may not even be active any more), especially if you're looking for something other than a Ringneck, Conure or African Grey - I ended up having to actually pay £5 to preloaded.co.uk to be able to contact the advertiser in the first week of advertising. So I thought it'd be mutually beneficial to breeders and potential owners for breeders to be able to keep electronic records of breeding/hatched birds and surface those to potential buyers, so you could search for a species and find someone who's just hatched the bird you want to buy or who will have chicks sometime soon. Same for animals besides birds too.

Obviously if anyone is to use the site it'd need to be something breeders will actually want to use so I'd be interested in knowing what they would want/need from a record-keeping perspective which is why I wanted to ask them. Is there a thread for animal breeding in Pet Island? Is it worth my posting a thread asking this?

In the states we have Pet Finder - but bird people are pretty characteristically off the grid. Or on a grid that shut down with compuserve in 97.

It's a large part of the reason I have some lofty goals about birb writing WAAAY down the road, but have no real ownership experience with anything more advanced than a cockatiel. Ornithology in America means you will spend at least five years having to jerk off cranes Alaska.

At least five years.

Sigh. Turns out Saturn is a cockerel, and the county doesn't allow roosters. Now I have to find a way to unload him on someone who won't eat him. He's a fine-looking silvered Wyandotte, too. By all rights I should be able to swap him for a hen.

Honestly I'm kinda hoping that my wife just sorta forgets about the possibility of being fined by the county. I doubt the neighbours will rat us out.

Oh God, it's this so much. You basically have to already know their email addresses and hope that they're still doing it, or else go poring over a series of webpages that make Geocities look modern and haven't been updated since their creation (and most of them seem to never check their emails).

I'm glad I finally have a place in Massachusetts that has an actual Facebook page, although hopefully we won't need to go through the process again for a long time now.

So, I am looking into getting Cricket a decent travel cage instead of the one she has now, which is basically a parakeet cage. It's rather bulky, and I just don't like it much at all. It works well for an emergency travel cage...if we have to go somewhere where she wouldn't have a cage of her own to sleep in or something. Any recommendations on ones you like?

I was looking into the Pac-O-Bird or something along those lines for her to be able to travel with us on walks and whatnot since Her Birdieness is too good for a harness (grrrr...we are trying a flight suit soon to see if that makes a difference). I'd like to get one that works well in cars etc...any suggestions or pros/cons etc on the ones you have or use?

EDIT: We took a car ride to drop off a whole mess of foods/toys etc she won't touch at http://zazushouse.org/ Great place, and they take good care of the birds. I didn't go in this time since I had Cricket with me, but I feel pretty good that the stuff I dropped off will be put to good use. Cricket has been spoiled by my parents and friends, and so many of the things they sent are way too big for her (macaw sized toys). She had so many seagrass mats she would never have gone thru them all in a lifetime. So, we went thru last night and cleaned out her toys, put aside all the ones the ones she hated or were way too big, the foraging toys my mom sent that were meant for Greys or Macaws, and a crapload of food/chew toys etc that she wouldn't touch. At least the birdies there will be happy, and I know the items will be used rather than sit around here in boxes. So, just throwing out a mention to people... if you have stuff you can't use, check your local rescues...they might be able to use them!

I don't think there have been any bird breeders in the threads before, just people with links to some. You could post a general thread, but there isn't a lot of general activity in this subforum any more, more like just a few active threads.

If you go to WHSmith, etc and find the specialist bird magazines there will be adverts in there from breeders; you could note down their details and contact them that way, or look up their names on FB and see if they show up.
