I had to google what year the movie Coraline came out even though someone probably said it earlier. It was 2009. There is no universal best-before date for comedy but timing is everything yknow???

Don't get me wrong, I like Coraline, but it's not a cultural touchstone like some of the movies they've parodied in the past years after they were released. Then again Golden Era Simpsons didn't rely on parodies to carry the humor and they were always jokes that could stand alone in context.

I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

The new animation looks so clean and sterile, amazing that it looked so much better 2 decades ago.

Yeah. I mean it's so loving lifeless. And the single best bit is still Moe in the lie detector and any who says otherwise can go right to heck

Yeah, I'd say Moe lie detector might be the best, although Skinner's "steamed hams" meal with Superintendent Chalmers is way up there too.

S1 also had the one with Marge almost having an affair

If you can forgive the unrefined animation the writing and humour are subtle but brilliant. This was the peak of James L. Brooks/Sam Simon's personal involvement so there's less zaniness but the overall quality is solid

On a side note, this really shows how the world has changed since the Simpsons were good. Imagine having to own hard (heh) copies of porn *shudders*

Porn was a lot different then. The internet was fairly niche, so most people had to either buy it in magazine form, or on video cassette. The video cassettes came in giant boxes so you wouldn't steal them.

The big difference is that the reference wasn't the joke back in the day. I'm Swedish and when I watched older Simpsons episodes as an adult I realized that I missed a ton of references to American celebrities and cultural phenomena that aren't internationally famous. But it was still funny. The joke was rarely: look it's Charlie Sheen!!!

this. honestly the thing that pisses me off more then smoothbrain jerkass homer, is rear end in a top hat fundi conservative ned flanders. in the golden years, ned was the steriotype of the "Reagan" christian ideal american but he was also genuinely a nice person to a extreme fault. now they have just made him the mouth peace for lovely evangelical poo poo and he is a passive aggressive dick.
to me, the draw of golden era ned flanders was that he was so nice and caring that homer looked like a real piece of poo poo by hating him for seemingly no reason. they played off each other well

the jokes about macgyver and matlock didn't age as poorly as they could have because the joke wasn't the reference, it was the people who liked those shows (weird, perpetually single women and old people, respectively)

I was actually talking to my husband about this. The Halloween episode with the gremlin, Bart tells Otto there's a gremlin on the side of the bus. Otto sees Hans Moleman driving an AMC Gremlin. As a kid it was hilarious because I thought Bart was referring to Moleman, I didn't know a Gremlin was a type of car. It didn't matter that I didn't know the car reference.

A good older gag I thought back to was the one where Patty (Selma?) was doing the self advertisement for dating. She says "You're looking at a free-lunch, boys. Come and get it..." Then the weird nnnnnGHHHAAAAaaann growl and then turning her cigarette into a pretzel with her tongue. Then capping it all off with Willie saying "Back to the loch with you, Nessie..."

As a kid, I vaguely understand it had to do with dating, but seeing that as an adult made everything so much better.

The episode last night was alright. Lisa tries to draw a comic for therapy but can't draw, so Marge does the illustrations for her. Other people see it, and it becomes a hit. Then there's a sharp left turn 2/3rds of the way through the episode where some Broadway weirdo turns it into a play.

Stupid cameos: Allison Bechdel and Marjane Satrapi.
