That's usually considered part of the play today, it just doesn't mean ball handler, it specifically isn't screeners.

quote:

When the ball is inbounds, including when the ball has been released on a throwin, if a defensive player makes illegal contact with an offensive player who is not directly involved in the action (i.e., the player doesn’t have the ball and he is not moving to receive a pass or setting a screen), an away-from-the-play foul is called.

It would be unlikely to come up outside of intentional fouling situations, and when it does its usually because of situations where someone is committing a frustration foul or they know they are getting burned, etc.

Why would seemingly every respected media company converge to present a misleading narrative?

Yellow journalism, misinformation and disinformation happen for many reasons. Human error, human laziness, political pressure from a variety of sources, pleasure in lying (yes, some people in news organizations, when caught, have admitted to derive enjoyment in lying to the public), groupthink, erroneous sources with made-up stories. There are other reasons but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

EvanTH posted:

What benefit is there to telling people the Democrats were not complicit and encouraging of mass financial malfeasance?

Potentially $$$ kickbacks, political self-aggrandizement, careerism, not rocking the boat, direct requests from c-level executives and upper echelon politicians.

Observing the characters in the following films should fill in most gaps on political deception/TV/newspaper/general media issues concerning your current questions:

Ace in the Hole
All the King's Men (1949)
The Battle of Algiers
Broadcast News
Citizen Kane
Cutter's Way
A Face in the Crowd

The Parallax View
Spotlight
Sweet Smell of Success

A dozen is plenty.

EvanTH posted:

And what should anyone make of this trend?

A trend is developing based on Trump's media proclamations and the coverage he's getting. Trump says the media is bad so R opinion plummets and vice-versa with the Ds. Mass media has changed over the years. TV news departments used to not be so much about profit many years back. Obviously that has changed.

Are sports is the only place where humans really try to balance our ideals of fair and lawful, everything in front of the refs eyes, and still take into account the human tendency to test the limits of every rule in an effort to succeed?

Humans try to balance ideals through rules and ideologies all over the place but it never works perfectly.

EvanTH posted:

Is that why people turn the games into grand historical institutions, vaunted histories, cherished collective memories, statues and plaques lining the memorial halls for the honored ancestors?Or is it just because dunks and dingers are deeply sick and it feels right and good to catch a ball ? Also, how can the net amount of entropy of the universe be massively decreased?

I don't think that's a primary reason. Sports are entertainment because athletes are doing stuff constantly that the average person cannot. Sports history is rife with cheating and disgraceful junk that is not popular today.

Only massive amounts of time (if ever). There is not consensus on these issues. Watch A Brief History of Time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYnHtEXJOjA if you haven't already.

So the poll has 93% of the GMs believe Warriors will win the championship so it means two team GMs voted for Cleveland. My guess for the other team that voted against Warriors is OKC.

Was this GM poll from before the lottery reform?

quote:

What rule (regarding play, Draft/Lottery, playoff format, etc.) most needs to change?

1. Playoff seeding – 27%
2. Draft Lottery odds/system – 21%
3. Draft combine (timing, medical testing, etc.) – 11%
4. Advance-the-ball rule – 7%

Also receiving votes:Enforce discontinued dribble; Adopt FIBA goaltending/basket interference rules; Fouls on flailing jump-shots; Intentional fouls; Minimum age; National TV schedule (more balanced); No max contracts; Reduce replay; Revenue sharing; Schedule
Some interesting choices there.

Also Markelle Fultz wasn't even "Also receiving votes" for this year's best rookie.

He's playing with two guards, a forward, and a center and is guarding Jeff Ennis so he could be listed as the 4 and that lineup would be exactly the same. He wants to be listed as PG and it doesn't matter at all so that's what they are doing.

Also Simmons looks loving awesome.

Who will win the 2017-18 Rookie of the Year?

1. Lonzo Ball, L.A. Lakers – 62%

2. Ben Simmons, Philadelphia – 24%

3. Dennis Smith Jr., Dallas – 7%

Also receiving votes: De'Aaron Fox, Sacramento; Jayson Tatum, Boston

Even the 76ers GM picked Ben Simmons over Markelle Fultz, so you can't expect the other GMs to pick Markelle Fultz over Ben Simmons.

19 GMs picked Lonzo Ball
7 GMs picked Ben Simmons
2 GMs picked Dennis Smith Jr.
De'Aaron Fox, Jayson Tatum got one vote each likely by their respective GMs.

So it also means that the Suns, Bulls, and Magic have no confidence in their high draft pick either.
