What are naval battles like in this game? I don't think I've ever fought a single Naval battle in Warhammer 1 / 2. I'm avoiding them in 2 because I'm scared they'll be absolutely poo poo like they were in Rome 2 / Attila.

As for Skaven ambush chance, I find ambush maps very boring, especially with how high the proc chance for an ambush is. 80% of my fights are ambushes and it is getting a bit stale. Mazdamundi has also been a massive bro to me and not once caused poo poo in my territories. He once sent his doomstack led by himself through my territories to gently caress up some Elves, and I got worried he was going to attack me, but he's been polite.

They're autoresolve and therefore highly favor the elves.

on fire and loving it
Here's my hot take on how fun the factions are:

Skaven > * Elves > Lizardmen

Skaven feel great both in gameplay and thematically. Playing them really feels different, especially in the early game, and every so often you wind up in a fight that you win (or lose) by the skin of your teeth because autoresolve loving hates you. It almost makes me want to play with the balance of power bar off, because like Skarsnick before, botched autoresolve calculations end up leading to some really great fights.

Food is a dumb mechanic until you realize you can raid for gobs of it. Then it almost feels too easy to get.

Sadly for the High Elves it feels like most fights come down to parking your 15/20 archers or archer hybrids on a hill and going AFK. I didn't ever buy any cavalry because why bother, and one flyer, or gently caress it, a spell or two, is enough to handle the rare few times I encounter siege. They've got the same problem as Wood Elves: toys that look neat but just end up feeling dinky compared to cheap rear end archers.

Their strategic layer is cool though. Influence is a pretty dumb resource, but the mechanics it drives are neat. Being able to calm down an aggressive neighbor then force them into a war to distract them is really cool and makes it feel like I can finally go about my business without having to paint the map just because some idiot faction declares war on me every other turn. Their focus on trade, and the spies from trade, are also really neat twists.

Dark Elves are more fun than High Elves in the battle department thanks to Shades, Witch Elves, and arguably useful cavalry. Shades being damage and stealth focused instead of defense focused like Seaboys means you can't just hire one type of unit and AFK most fights. Their strategic layer is a little less interesting. Black Arks are neat. Slaves are cool but not really super involving past the city planning phase.

And then the poor Lizardmen. What a snore these dudes turned out to be. Sauruses are overwhelming powerful for how easy and cheap they are -- even moreso than High Elf archers/Seaboys. Dinosaurs are there, but once you get the Dinotopia fanfic out of your system, they fall into rigid roles. And everything is so goddamn slow, unless you want to run Skinks, which are the same tier as and barely cheaper than Saruses and are also baked rear end unless you manage to lure their opponent into water.

The Lizardman's strategic layer is the Geomantic Web, which awards methodical expansion, so I guess they're the best race for map-painting via autoresolve, which sounds about as fun as watching said map paint dry.

I've barely fought any Skaven or Lizardmen except for intervention armies, since I've been slogging through a legendary Tyrion run. And goddamn if that isn't a slog, although I unintentionally made it harder for myself. I tried an initial strategy of fortifying the Strait of Lothern and the defensive gates protecting the interior, only to realize that the Delves and Norscans were using the exterior provinces to recruit armies right next door. They might as well have been Skaven for how many there were, with the Norscans fielding at least 6 stacks at a time and three Delf factions fielding even more combined. I had, like, two armies. It reached the point where I literally couldn't move a single unit or hero and couldn't afford to lose a single battle against the gate-sieging stacks which had Black Guard in them. I spent a lot of gold on building upgrades to add a single wizard to the garrison of each gate because every little bit helped. I lost one gate battle because the garrison got too low, but the Delves stupidly sacked the gate settlement instead of capturing it.

The battles were initially quite interesting and challenging. There were surprisingly tight siege battles because the gate garrisons were strong and the sieging ai army composition were competent. But the gate map is the same one every time and the ai attacks in the same way so it eventually became monotonous, since I had to manually fight the battles in order to win. I really had to play them too and not just AFK it, since the garrison needed to remain strong enough for the next attack.

Eventually, I recruited a princess with -30% upkeep to Sea Guard and Ellyrian Reavers and had her march out from Lothern to reconquer Ulthuan counter-clockwise. Turns out Sea Guard, Ellyrian Reavers, bolt throwers and great eagles can take on three stacks of Norscans at a time without any trouble, especially when they all end up on triple gold chevrons and buffs from a level-25 general (after endless heroic victories) and post-battle executions of tens of thousands of Norscans. More of a genocide, really but a good one. The best part is when they rout en masse and hundreds of elves start shooting them all in the back for about half a minute.

Er, so don't let enemies onto Ulthuan. That's how you get a tedious campaign.

Just had a pretty typical rat and elf battle. I was outnumbered, facing a veritable swarm of enemies. Thankfully the superior quality of my troops won me the day; that and my ranged option scored hundreds of kills as they blobbed up against my battle line. It was my first heroic victory, tho, so I guess that counts for something. Also, diary, I may be playing skaven wrong.

For real, I'm apparently breaking a lot of rules. I maintain battle lines, generally outkill my enemy, have a food surplus after taking the south half of the southlands. I rely on numbers a bit less than I rely on the obscenity that is plaguepaw catapults. That, and just the spell plague, in general. Had one battle against the undead where I tried to blitz an assassin against their vampire lord but the AI responded by wrapping him in around half the enemy army, so I just dumped overcharged plagues on him. Got 300 kills on the first cast. Won that battle with something like 34 "real" deaths. Queek's army is more elite than the rest of my forces, tho, due to the upkeep thing, and tbh, I think people underestimate what AP + having actual armor brings to the table compared to clanrats. Clanrats do alright in the "just hold the loving line" department, though, which is really all you need infantry to do when you have those goddamn catapults backing them up, tho.

Only act of rat blasphamy I've completely failed at is making friends with something other than other rats and dark elves. I guess I made friends with some orcs due to shared hatred of lizards? Its kind of funny that when you play a bad guy race in warhammer that isn't just a horde, you end up feeling less like a dreaded overlord and more like a persecuted sad gently caress who just wants someone to buy his loving trade goods. Rats just wanna live in peace snorting some stones but instead are eternally pulled to war by a barrage of rear end in a top hat islander elves and their fat frog friends.

I am happy honga updated finally

looking through some factions, I love that most people get to take out and live in the wood elf areas and it nullifies the attrition from athel loren

Looking at undead, I really like their verson of roads

https://www.honga.net/totalwar/warhammer2/building.php?l=en&v=warhammer2&f=wh2_main_vmp_necrarch_brotherhood&b=wh2_main_vmp_raisedead

+50% attrition damage in the local area, -15% enemy movement in the local area, -10% enemy hero success chance, -30% raise dead cost, and a garrison of two grave guards and a black knight

Overall this looks to be pretty good

still worried about if the older hordes still have to pay population for every upgrade

Also what is the difference beteween the armor types as far as damage goes? It has some armor as wh2_main_leather, wh2_main_chainmail, and wh2_main_plate. As far as I know this is just a hold over for different armor values but does nothing.

I've been playing around with making a Vanguard Skaven unit consisting of 2-4 Plagueclaw catapults and the rest slaves. The idea is that you initiate the siege with them but support them with your Legendary Lord or other better armies. The enemy towers will be focusing on siege towers full of dudes that only cost 12g/turn to soak up missile fire, and the initial wave can literally be used solely to exhaust the enemy's ammo and get some of the towers docked. Your reinforcements then arrive to shimmy up the towers already placed and push forward. All the while your artillery is softening up the enemy.

Its not terribly expensive upkeep-wise and a great way to quickly level up other Lords. It also works well when enemies turtle up and you have to deal with a tier 5 settlement with a full stack garrisoned inside.

Does anyone know if you can see anywhere that tells you what's affecting my unit upkeep? I somehow managed to get to the point in my High Elf campaign where, if my Lord has the full blue bar skills, my Star Dragons only cost 54 upkeep, which is about 1/2 of a unit of Swordmasters. I run 4 - 12 dragons in every army and have one that's just 19 dragons and a lord just for fun.

Thinking back, Rat Ogres may actually be the preferable choice now for your early game damage dealer as Skaven. Mainly because I feel that the Runner line isn't really worth the investment until Gutter Runners with Poison. Skavenslave Slingers are abject garbage, but Night/Gutter Runners don't do enough sling damage for their cost and you can make up for the Skavenslaves' terrible damage with sheer numbers. The game changes once you get poison on those slingers though; it's that good of a force multiplier.

Skaven corruption gives you like, 2 unrest. Its not that big a deal. I haven't had much issues with that. Although skavenslave upkeep is super cheap and they can hold a line fairly well considering, you still have the whole upkeep % increase for each stack you've got, and they're pretty drat useless on their own. I throw them in front of my main line, still in range of the general, so they can serve as padding while you nuke them and their foes with nasty spells and a bunch of weaponry. You'll probably want those weapons protected by actual clanrats since they at least take a bit longer to die.

Support armies full of slaves is... not good?, because sometimes your reinforcements show up on their lonesome and slaves and even clanrats on their own are incapable of doing much except dying in large quantities, even if you encircle enemies. And your "good" stuff is better if they've got something else to eat poo poo in lieu of them. I prefer to have each army run a fair amount of slave chaff than to have exclusively chaff armies running about.
