you, uh, do know the contexts for that question right? Because it literally was predicated on 'I have sexual attraction to my partner'.

Well, obviously the circumstances are different but they both draw upon the same false notion that people can change who they’re attracted to if they try hard enough.

I only know the part that was quoted in the article, which certainly seemed to be saying that this is something all heterosexual men should do if they aren't attracted to pre-op trans women.

People may be telling themselves that they don't wanna gently caress trans people due to preconceived notions born from societal biases of what genitals mean. My take from Zinnias tweets was that she felt people should have a deeper think about their tastes beyond just "this person has a penis so nah" as the effective default, not that people who just aren't into the dick need to be mass converted.

Kim Justice

Ah ok this isn't a belief that's been pushed by certain branches of the trans community, my bad! I guess that Riley Dennis video where she says that you're a bigot if you don't want to date trans people and that you can "unlearn" your preferences was just faked because the anti-SJW folk were running out of material to riff on.

Joke Zinnia Jones tweet or not, the point remains.

again it literally wasn't even about that, the asker explicitly said they were attracted to their partner, but yes Laci also turned it to the "OH SO WHAT PEOPLE CAN'T HAVE PREFERENCES" way, just like she turned right to "I CAN'T BELIEVE FEMINISTS WOULD SAY I, A WOMAN, AM BEING A BIGOT, NICE FEMINISM BROS" and all the other poo poo every other very boring woman like her who gets alt-right love does.

Okay, in that context, with someone actively wanting their own sexual preference changed, its not a problem. Although I'd still say it's not possible but whatever.

Kim Justice

Guys, we all have our preferences and they're pretty much hardcoded in. And saying that it's the same as not wanting to date a black person is spurious as hell...like, there's so many factors you've not considered. What about starting a family, say? Maybe someone wants a kid, they'd like to be a biological father or something along those lines...we trans women can't provide that because we don't have uteruses. You don't get that in other cases...

As much as I'm sure things would be great if everyone had a degree of attraction to everyone else, that's just not the way things work. Some people are attracted to us (You know what type of porn is just about as popular as straight porn?), some people are not. Physical attraction...it's not that deep. And to say that not being attracted to a certain someone makes you a transphobe, or a homophobe, or a racist...sorry, that's just completely ridiculous.

If this extended to not wanting to be friends with said someone or not wanting to interact with them in any way, I'd be in agreement with you about those biases. But physical attraction is not something that can just be controlled like that because so much of it is subconscious and hardwired. Like, there might be certain little things that will change here and there but in so many cases, you're either into something or you're not into something.

The fertility thing is bullshit. Outside of the fact that there are other options for raising children, you never see this being brought up with regards to cis women even though there are numerous ways a cis woman can be infertile. That it's only ever brought up in relation to trans women makes it absolutely transphobic.

The attraction thing is irrelevant because no one is saying anyone should be forced to date a trans person. Just that, if someone is turned off purely because the prospective partner is trans, it might be because of deeply held transphobic views, and that the person in question should probably do some soul searching.

I mean, yes? In exactly the same way that someone is very likely racist if they wouldn't date a black person. These attitudes don't come from nowhere, and if you're suggesting they're purely biological constructs that just happen to exist within some people, separate from societal influences, I'd point you to that one black dude that's converted several hardcore KKK members into not being racists.

I'm kinda glazing over this, are we seriously lumping "I don't want to date x" with "I think x should be gassed"? Thats a bit extreme isn't it?

E: Like I prefer a woman a bit shorter then me. Does that mean I have some deep hatred of tall women and I secretly want to cut them off at the knees to make them shorter?

I'm still reeling from saying fertility is an issue never brought up with cis women because that is hilariously untrue.

EDIT: I've been thinking about this post and I regret making it. Female infertility is a large issue in my immediate and extended family but it was entirely inappropriate of me to foist my familial/genetic baggage into this issue. I'm sorry.

Stop following this thread.

To be clear, I don't mean, "roflcopter yur dum, stop followin the thread dummas", I mean that for the the sake of your own mental health, unbookmark this thread. I did that almost a month ago, and it ended up making me feel slightly less awful about myself. I don't even know why I'm here now; I just wanted to see the thread's thoughts were on John Walker's dumb tweet about gameplay, but we stopped talking about that like two pages ago.

This is really good advice in general. If you find yourself reading stuff that fucks with your brain problems, get away from it ASAP and stay away long enough for things to move on. May be a day or so, may be a week, may be never in certain cases.

There's no good reason to keep reading stuff that makes your depression worse. Keep away from it, and your life will be so much better. (And you will be more able to do good stuff that is actually important instead of arguing on the internet.)
