I have been to a ton of theaters. And the higher the ticket price, the better behaved people tend to be, this is especially surprising considering those theaters also allow alcohol. This is made even better by being 21+ only. I cannot think of a single screening at a 21+ only venue where anyone was being disruptive, but anytime I have been to a "standard" theater there are always countless annoying shits.

If you haven't had the opportunity spend the extra money on a luxury cinema for a movie you really want to see and enjoy the better experience.

In Gravity, why does Clooney's voice sound like he's voicing a cartoon character? I mean, I know it's because it all was recorded in a sound studio, but it has a distinctly voice-performance-only quality to it that I can't put my finger on.

Why did popcorn become the de facto movie food? Is it just because it's cheap and can be sold at an exorbitant markup?

We call them Drumsticks and they are one of the more popular ice cream bar type snacks, but I can't ever really recall seeing ice cream at the movie theater. It sounds good though and I might have to look the next time I'm at the movies.

We have Drumsticks too but they look like this (and are mass produced convenience store/gas station ice creams)

Popcorn, candy, and nuts were commonly sold outside theaters in the twenties by street vendors, or there would be a candy shop next door, etc. When the Depression started cutting into theater revenues they took to selling food themselves, and popcorn became common over peanuts because no shells.

We call those King Cones, Drumsticks look like this:

There are probably a million regional variations, but the closest thing I've seen to a choc-top we call dip top, and it's typically made with: /soft serve and looks like this

That being said, I've never seen soft serve or hand dipped ice cream at a movie theater.

How come there arent concert movies anymore? Did they stop selling well because of the internet, so moved to dtv, or did people just stop watching them altogether? There were a ton in the 60's/70's and even some in the 80's and 90's

There are, they're just from artists you probably don't care about. In the last few years I can recall like Jonas Bros, Bieber, Katy Perry etc. all having concert movies.

e: Dave Chappelle's Block Party is I think the last one I watched in a theater

Yeah can definitely see that. It's also one of the few things where I'm pretty sure I prefer the regular cut to the Director's Cut, it just flows that little bit better. The soundtrack record was a disappointment, but I like the extended music bits on the DVD. I wish they did a two disc version with a ton more of the concert itself properly edited and mixed, it just looked amazing. I think a lot of why I refuse to hate Kanye is because of that movie.

I've been looking around and can't seem to find a better answer than the one I saw that made me look it up in the first place:

When was the first spinning newspaper montage used? I just saw it in The Crime of Monsieur Lange on Filmstruck, so it at least goes back to 1936.

So, how do you guys see Scarface?

It's one of those many 'obvious' movies I've just never gotten around to sitting down and watching for a variety of reasons, but felt tonight was as good a time as any and I had the 3 hours necessary to watch it in one sitting.

I didn't dislike it, but I'm not sure I'd place it in the classic cinema pile over the schlocky 80s movies I also like pile. I don't live far from the setting, so it amused me just how off Pacino is, especially given the main associate is a true Cuban guy. If it were made now, I feel everyone would be saying that he should've been the lead and making a fuss over casting a non Cuban. But at the same time Pacino's performance is so insane and over the top, it's really enjoyable and why you keep watching. If it was played super straight, would the movie be that memorable?

It's always been lauded as a classic while also remaining a pop culture favorite, and I totally get the latter... but it's more down to the absurdity and quotability than quality of filmmaking I feel. The final scenes could really be in any dumb 80s action movie, really. And that's fine, cos I love those films too! I honestly don't know what score to give it on Letterboxd, but current thought is 3.5, and curious as to other thoughts.

There's a lot to like about it, but it needs to be viewed as an entirely different beast than the original with Paul Muni, which I feel is significantly better (though admittedly I'm a sucker for George Raft performances).

I saw a terrible Nic Cage movie called Season of the Witch where Nic and Ron Perlman play knights who have to escort a suspected witch during the plague.

It was bad enough to actually be enjoyable so I recently bought it and now I think I'm having a stroke because it's not the same movie. It's the same for the first half, but I'm positive the original screening had the two knights winding up in a small village and there's a surprise twist at the end.

This version has them going to a monastery and fighting a demon. Like many late-period Nicolas Cage films, this had a troubled production, so it's entirely possible two different cuts exist. However, I can't find anything about the first version. Is there another Cage/Perlman buddy pic that I'm confusing this with?
