What's interesting about that is Virginia used to have cross burnings be illegal completely. Klan held a rally on private land, at night, in the woods; but the light shone through the woods and was seen from a state highway. People freaked and the police arrested several of the Klansmen and charged them under the law. But apparently, the Klan members were trying to keep the burning private and didn't intend to intimidate anyone (at least in a provable sense), so the USSC ruled it legal and tossed out the state court conviction. But yah marching into the middle of town and burning a cross is deffo illegal. Why aren't Nazi torch marches?

There is some value in them feeling too intimidated to be as open as they were, but these sorts of popups have been going on for a while, just not this blatant. It's great that we can mobilize lots of the community when they go on their big pre-planned marches, that's huge, but we also need to be able to mobilize people on short notice. We need to keep evolving our tactics along with them. Edit: it is absolutely an RCP front group and I'm frankly astonished at how little that's been recognized, and I'm honestly pretty anxious about the magnitude of stupid poo poo that could go down that day
