Kenny Logins posted:it just explicitly states/foreshadows that the (non)heroes ride a literal raft made of human bodies to a questionable safety after having made a large number of increasingly poor decisions in desperate times it's worse than that the protagonist in the story is desperate to save his family from what he believes is an imminent attack by pirates which drives him to make a raft of the corpses of his crewmates. when he eventually reaches home, he murders a bystander and then his family believing they are the pirates, the pirates never having actually arrived at his home. he then swims out to join the crew of the black freighter when he realizes the depths of his depravity it's veidt's actions entirely: he is willing to go to any length to stop a threat only he perceives and he commits an unforgivable act in his blind zeal to stave off a worse threat that never manifests

Kenny Logins posted:okies really haven't materially changed in fortunes in like 100 years huh it's honestly the nadir of american culture, like every single thing that makes people from abroad go "hey what the gently caress is going on with america" is at or near its peak in oklahoma. culturally it's a mix of the midwest, the southwest, and the south, but primarily just the worst bits of each. i mean just look at what it leads the country in http://www.statemaster.com/state/OK/Top-Rankings http://www.statemaster.com/state/OK/Bottom-Rankings

the one upside is that if you're some sort of weirdo in oklahoma you seem to grow up into a weirder weirdo than you would have in a more accepting community. some of my favorite freaky people are still there, and i just wish they were somewhere that appreciated them more
