I've been reading blastron's Ascendance of a Bookworm translations and it's extremely good even so far. Apparently the series is nigh-infinite in length though? And I don't anticipate ever being able to weeb sufficiently to read it if it's untranslated. So I guess I'm hoping blastron doesn't get tired of translation over the next million years (approximately). Still good, but it's kind of crazy to think it's not even a tenth of the way translated, if I'm understanding things correctly.

Anyway, I'm looking for recs. That Kenkyo one in the OP is supposed to be good; is that still the consensus? I might pick that one up.

Yeah, even if I still had the free time to release a chapter every week it would take me a literal decade to churn out. There's no way I can match the pace of a full-time author like that. No plans on stopping soon, though!

Kenkyo Kenjitsu very quickly throws its premise to the backburner and becomes a good and entertaining slice of life story. Also it's nice to finally read something that isn't in a fantasy genre.

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka is probably the only other story I'd recommend, even though it definitely fits into the fantasy murderhobo stereotype. Just in a very endearing way. It's started to meander in its closing plot, though, but by then you'll either be hooked or have dropped it.

Yeah translation is out and finished. I just finished reading it and, it was kinda meh. It's all about showing how the Roble Holy Kingdom is dealing with jadalbaoth invading so theres lot of focus on paladins and such. Also, its mostly all buildup until the next book.

One big note though:
At the bottom of one of the translated chapters there is a link to a "intermission" chapter. This chapter is not canon! It's porn written by the translator nigel. And not just any porn, its rape-porn. :nms: :suicide: I suggest skipping it.

I'm telling my mommy. That pubbie doesn't do video games right!
Didn't really feel like very much happened in this one, and I certainly don't think this arc deserved two volumes. With the stinger at the end of 11 I was hoping for something decent, but it wasn't even alluded to; at least the volume could have ended with that.

I don't know if it's worse than volume 7 but I didn't think it was very good, and the translator's :airquote:creative interpretations:airquote: are getting out of hand, not even counting his fetish fanfiction.

I adore bookworm and it's a shame so little of it is in English, it takes some pretty sharp turns and a lot of its best material is in the second half. Like, while the first arc is good, it's also not very representative of the rest of the series.

I enjoyed Kenkyo quite a bit but I honestly have difficulty putting my finger on why. It's a fun and chill bit of shoujo slice-of life. Try it and see how you like it.

Kumo desu ga, nani ka? Is really solid. The main character is interesting, the game-system like stuff is relatively well done, and it has a decent enough overall plot. Unfortunately, the release speed has slowed down a lot recently.

I Said Make My Abilities Average is only just starting to get a decent amount of it translated, though I haven't checked the quality. It's really good, though. Funny at times, with some hints of interesting worldbuilding here and there.

Some people don't like Lazy Dungeon Master, but I still enjoy it. Once it starts to get into Dungeon vs Dungeon battles it gets really fun and creative.

Other than that, there's a lot of popular stuff which can be described as "It's good, but...", with how much you like it depending on how much you can ignore the uncomfortable "but..." part. Stuff like Mushoku Tensei, Death March Kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyusoukyoku, Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou, etc.

I'm not sure how to feel about this; it's great that it only gets better but I love the struggles to innovate in the first half and how much harder it is for her than for people in other stories of this genre. Also, it's surprisingly educational! I'm currently on chapter 113 and I now know various methods of making ink and also why some kinds of ink corrode paper!

cultivation chat group has this section at the beginning, when the main character still believes hes reading the online postings of a bunch of chuunibyou, and he writes down a pill recipe they post in the chat group to research it because of how dangerous it is to randomly combine such medicinal ingredients as ginseng and ginger or whatever with each other

its funny. later his doctor cousin finds the list and tries to warn him off taking the “risk” of eating a bunch of tcm plants

i guess chinese really do buy into this stuff

China had a whole bunch of history edited during the cultural revolution which is why the remaining martial arts and other things are believed in more so than might make sense. That's what a friend who was an exchange student explained it at least.

I took a class in Uni on the history of Chinese medicine and it was fascinating, though I'm skeptical of some of what the prof laid down since it's the usual thing with any particular cultural thing that's heavily promoted by a group of people, especially a state. From what that source said, TCM in its modern form was more or less invented or modernized from various older traditional practices and folk remedies after the CCP took control. It was an attempt to present a facet of Chinese culture as modern rather than archaic and backwards. Apparently there's some really old surviving acupuncture teaching materials that indicates pre-TCM acupuncture may have involved bloodletting to some degree.

On top of what Fallorn mentioned, it's also a general pride thing. It's part of the broader Chinese identity and even though my parents left China over thirty years ago and aren't really patriotic about China, there's just some things they cling to as part of that identity.

That's kind of a weird thought isn't it?
I recently read all of Blastron's translations for Bookworm and god, this is probably the best web/light novel since Spice and Wolf. The only thing I kinda didn't like was(spoilers I guess?)how slightly...lovely/selfish? Maine was internally about her situation and her attitude about her family that lasted the first twenty chapters. I mean I guess it's understandable to a degree but drat girl they show you nothing but love and that's how you think of em even after so many months? But that said, probably the part that made me smile a lot was that after she had that major collapse and had a taste of an actual good life that she very much could've embraced right then and there, she chose to keep doing what she had always been doing and actually wanted to be with her family, finally fully accepting them. :3: God I hope with how long this is her family never falls completely away in relevance cause they're such good supporting characters. Also I love Benno and accepting her weirdness because of possible profits. That chapter in the shampoo factory was funny and I can't wait to see it in manga form.

It's real good, always want more, etc. Thanks for translating it Blaston~

average is completely devoid of challenge or meaningful conflict. the mc just casually walks through a world where she is by far the strongest living being. that's not necessarily a bad premise, but i find the execution a bit dull. average is like death march without the pedophilia.

I feel like it's kinda insulting to MDDYA to compare it with stuff like Mushoku Tensei/Arifureta. I feel like the latter stuff is only really enjoyable if you're young and/or genre-naive enough to be completely unfamiliar with that sort of story.

arifureta is awful trash no one should ever read, but i enjoyed it when the translations were barely better than gibberish. it just seemed appropriate. i tried reading the later chapters which had coherent translations, and it just wasn't the same. well, that and the chapter i chose at random turned out to be about cum slimes.

Could you elaborate on MDDYA? I haven't gotten into many cultivation stories because the terminology is frequently just beyond me and I dislike it when things are rendered in pinyin because I'm not fond of Mandarin.

From my understanding, MDDYA's subversions largely come from the protagonist not really interested in cultivation stuff and still having a distinct mindset that doesn't see cultivation culture as a good or worthy thing, and she's not really after power except for the purposes of surviving/fixing bugs.

I mean, if you've read one xianxia story and one female reincarnator story (which I haven't but every summary for one on NU is almost exactly the same so I feel like I know the conventions from that alone) you know enough to enjoy the first two arcs of MDDYA. After that it kind of evolves into its own thing.

It's a weirdly popular premise. I guess authors think its more legit for their self-inserts to poo poo all over their High School bullies if the bullies first literally attempt to kill them.
