Bad? I thought a lot of state run lotteries put their profits into education funding.

I guess it's a success story then? :confuoot:

They do but poor people are buying the majority of lottery tickets so it's basically using escapism to tax people who can least afford it.

After working at a liquor store for three years I am strongly against the lottery existing.

Like I guess it's good that the money goes to schools and whatnot instead of a billionaire's pocket but the same thing could be achieved by just taxing rich people more and preventing idiots with no job from buying $20 of scratch tickets every day.

i worked a gas station counter for a while during college

every morning there would be a crowd of olds storming in to spend what they had on scratch offs. They’d take their winnings, buy more tickets, and repeated until they were out of cash for the day

we had to make a rule that customers werent allowed to scratch then in store because they eould take up all the counter space all morning. so instead they shuffle in one at a time, buy what they can, then shuffle back out to their cars and repeat.

its poo poo, get rid of it

To add to what My Kinda Ape said regarding the taxes, when that money goes to public schooling usually that means an equal amount of the state's public school budget gets redirected to something else, so public schools effectively get no change in budget regardless of how much the lottery brings in. Or at least, that's how the lovely states get away with it while saying it supports public schools.

The lottery effectively places a higher tax burden on whoever plays it while allowing some private entities (the retailers, the printing companies for the tickets, etc.) to take a slice too.

its a tax on the poor and stupid people. when i worked a similar job, i'd see the same people 5 days/wk at the same time blowing $20-$40 at a time on tickets and scratchers.

casinos in non-traditional states seem to work the same way. its sold to people as supplementing the schools budget but ends up being all there is to it.

iirc some paper in Texas did an investigation into the lottery which stated back in the 1990s that it'd pay for education and in the end some trivial amount actually went to education. its basically a tax on people who are bad at math and in need of education.

I had a business professor go over the lottery and the take away was once the pay out crossed a certain number (I thought it was around 350 million), assuming you had the spare change to buy a ticket, you could potentially earn a lifestyle changing amount of money for a few dollars. But you have to play those few bucks to be eligible.

Donald Trump has become the first president to address the conference of a recognised anti-LGBT hate group.

Trump addressed the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit – classed as a “hate group” – as he told the crowds their anti-LGBT views would “no longer be silenced”.

That's why you always take the randomized computer pick, any system you might devise for choosing your numbers will have surely been duplicated.

Won't be more likely to win but will be less likely to split the pot if you do. I would love to see a histogram of all numbers played on all tickets for a single drawing. Expect heavy overrepresentation of 1-12, less but still much on 13-31
