If their government wasn't upheld by the DUP they wouldn't give a gently caress about the province's future and would probably jettison it tbh

I don't think he's gonna get done for banging kids like your average MP, I just think it's pretty possible him and mcdonnel get into power and do something super stupid. Corbyn is good because he's a decent honest socialist but he's also old as gently caress and from the old left wing of labour which can be a bit wierd and out of touch. Tbf one of the best things about corbyn seems to be his willingness to let the members make a proper modern platform I'm just v pessimistic and can see McDonnel or maybe the boy himself dying on some hill over a sacred cow of the 70s left and bringing the whole thing down.

Back in grad school I did a research seminar in which I wrote on Britain in the early interwar years, and it seems to me that with only a few exceptions housing costs/availability has always been a major problem since, like, industrialization. Hell, Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier, written in the 30s, spend much of its first half on housing problems in the industrial north.

BrutalistMcDonalds posted:oh my lord In 1924 the first Labour government under Ramsay MacDonald passed the Housing Financial Provisions Act, more commonly called the Wheatley Housing Act after its author Health Minister John Wheatley. Wheatley was about as radical* a member of the Labour government that you were likely to find, having at one point been suspended from the Commons for accusing Conservative members of being murderers for voting to cut child welfare subsidies, and proposed in his act a vast subsidization of council house construction, which was badly needed. Construction was slow due to slum clearance and the general lack of enthusiasm of the Conservative governments which followed Labour's downfall later that year, but by the mid 1930s it started to pick up a bit of steam and resulted in over half a million new houses being constructed overall by the end of the 15 years it was active. In other words, they managed to finally get a handle on things right before the bombs came again. *Oswald Mosely, shortly before leaving Labour to form the New Party (forerunners of his British Fascists), called him, "the only man of Lenin-quality the English left has ever produced."
