lmao Chile was a trainwreck waiting to happen according to these quotes from Sampaoli that were unpublished until now

quote:

Arturo Vidal: "He requires a medical specialist. He likes to drink and is not in control. When we were on the plane back from Lima, he asked me if he could open a bottle of beer he had bought at the airport. I told him no, as directors and others were coming. With the help of the chauffer, he and some others still got their hands on a bottle of whisky, which I had to dismiss even though I knew that the culprit was Vidal."

quote:

Alexis Sánchez: "He wakes up with his headphones on and sits alone for breakfast, not talking to anyone."

“I had to stop Costa Rica scoring a goal, I wasn’t going to let that happen. So I pretended to faint on the grass, and when the police came I pretended to faint again. The policeman said to me: ‘Grandma, what’s up with you?’ I told him: ‘We’re going to the bloody World Cup and you can’t stop me.’” Her motivation: “When we failed to qualify in 2013 I cried. It's a complex issue. Croatian FA is corrupt and criminal and some fans turned on the national team and tried to sabotage it to indirectly attack the FA. The team got close to being thrown out of the Euro 2016 qualifiers over that and had to play many home games with no attendance. This continued in WC qualifiers too. Results started suffering.

Then Modric and Lovren were summoned as witnesses to the financial fraud trial of one of the heads of FA, Mamic. He was their manager in their youth and laundered money / evaded taxes with their contracts. To protect his rear end (and probably theirs too), they gave obviously dishonest "I don't remember" statements. That caused an outrage in the general public and even memes where in the first picture a popular singer sings some lyrics about remembering love and in the second picture Modric on the witness stand responds "I don't remember".

More fans turn on the team, to the point where it's very common to have people actively rooting against the national team. The manager who is the FA's puppet can't change anything. He can't speak against FA, he has no authority and charisma to lift up the team, and has limited managerial skills anyway. Modric tries to make it up on the pitch and really gives it all. Despite that, poor results continue and the manager gets sacked after the draw with Finland.

We now have a new manager who seems to be a stronger character but he too was installed by the FA (whom else). Even if we qualify, black clouds over the team won't lift...

The Croatian team is stacked, I think they'll be able to handle Greece but if the team really is that psychologically damaged then the tournament performance will probably suffer.

Doctor Malaver

There's some hope. If the new manager clicks well with the team and we destroy Greece, at least some of the negativity will disperse. In the mean time, a poll on one of the relatively neutral news sites gives only 56% to "Our players need massive support from the stands in the home game" compared to 44% for "No, that would mean support for the FA".

And then there's the theory that the players performed so well on Euro 2016 out of spite, precisely because they were sick and tired of all the accusations and bad vibes.
