Wow, that could be comedy. Why on earth is Ben "i love Wing Commander, hate Freespace, and ignore other space/sci-fi games" Lesnick on that panel? Hopefully Scott Manley & co keep him quiet. Or not :laffo:

Obviously they asked Chris to "bring something breathtaking, something massive, gigantic...something that makes people speechless when they see it, so they whisper to themselves "I'd never thought that this is possible and exists"!", so he sent Ben.

Ben Lesnick blames Freespace 2 for killing the whole genre.

This is strange given that Freespace 2 is typically regarded as being the best sci-fi flight sim ever made.

No. His argument was that it was bad, with no character, boring, worse than Wing Commander, and such a bad game that no one liked that it killed the whole genre/industry. I'm sure all of his opinions are still up on his appaling personal shrine site or all over WCNews.

Not that it's really that surprising if you were, like me, involved in sci-fi communities in the late 90s/early 00s. Every group was fiercely fighting every other group. The Big Three fight was a melee between the Trekkies VS Warsies VS Fivers (and there was often fierce sectarian violence within those groups -- Kirk or Picard, Sinclair or Sheridan??). The flight sim rivalries were just an extension of that, and Wing Commander had some very devoted fans in those days. Wing Commander had a lot of games with big name actors and was basically a big Hollywood movie series. In comparison, Freespace wasn't as obviously 'good' and was practically dehumanising and depersonalising in its grim narrative. And FS2 does sort of have the dubious distinction of being one of the last flight sims ever released as well as being the best.

Just, like with most things when it comes to Lesnick, he never seemed to move on from those days.

loving hell that picture of Captain Richard. Yiiiiiiiiikes. Boy I sure can't wait to watch a bunch of CIG's paid shills to sit on a panel and circlejerk about how great Star Citizen is for forty five minutes :allears:

Also, what the gently caress is up with three CIG dudes being on a general "space and scifi" panel? What the gently caress does DiscoLando have to do with games like No Man's Sky, or Children of a Dead Earth? Does Ben Lesnick even realize CoD:IW exists? Where's ObsidianAnt on that panel?

What the gently caress are Lesnick and Huckaby doing on that list? They know gently caress all about making games, and Lesnick's sole interest in the genre is Wing Commander. Were they actually invited to this, or did Lesnick's gravitational pull drag it towards him?

They saw the openings on the panel, so they signed up. Lesnick is the preeminent expert on the most (in)consequential space game in history and Jared has never turned down an opportunity to blabber incessantly about nothing.

Plus, I think they heard there is free food in the green room.
