Oh boy.

So McNally's wife (active) sadly took her own life and her unit not only blamed him, but were completely useless with making sure McNally got his survivor's benefits. They marginalized their effort by claiming to make sure she required suicide prevention without actually taking any steps (like 24-hour watch). McNally has been trying for over a year to go to school, get an ID, and a semblance of his life, however due to the nepotism and overall uselessness of people in power, getting someone to help him has been difficult. He served as well so it is strange why there is so much weird crazy bullshit, but weird poo poo happened to me (just not nearly on that level).

So McNally has not gone to press, and stayed silent despite some of us urging him to go public at some point. I think we all collectively agree that most suicide prevention stuff is bullshit anyways, but using that as part of your thesis (the other being 'McNally was a mean person to her. I have never met him nor discussed him with his wife though.') is stupid. They are at fault, they know it, and are reluctant to admit it wasn't handled correctly.

So the green weenie hosed him anyway it wanted. Then it got its buddies and hosed him again and again. Now the green weenie isn't returning phone calls and he is saying "hey, can you fix this? You broke it." Luckily he has had support, paperwork to back up his claims, and people willing to listen.

We are all rooting for him.

Don't forget that he got a bill from the hospital charging him for handling her donated organs. That might not be military though, that might just be American healthcare at work. And that they've sent him letters expressing condolences for the loss of [wrong name here].

i've been keeping up with McNally from the beginning. I knew the backstory. I had some incorrect assumption that he had finally got most of his stuff sorted. I didn't realize that most of the survivor benefits were still up in the air.

You know, you make me want to do this art project even more. I meant it as a way for people to get an experience basing judgment on appearances and stuff with the underlying issue of me trying to find my identity, and you kind of solidify that.

It sounds stupid but try some things that are repetitive and meditative. I gold pan. It sounds loving retarded but I do it because it is a 20-30 minute meditative process where I am removing dirt and rock slowly and gently to reveal gold. It's not a lot but soon I will have enough to make my wife a ring, she's been there for me when no one else was.

As for not giving a gently caress, it takes time. You need to get into a mentality of "can I control this?" That's ultimately what the issue is, giving up control. Getting involved means you are trying to control the outcome. That's why I don't react to some things and it pisses my wife off because I can give up control for something like our renters needing to replace everything (our air filter was the buildings original. It was built in the 70's). We try to repair it, they can hold us liable for damages. We go through the property management company, we get he issue solved later, but we are safe legally because this poo poo was so goddamn bad.

I could worry about every detail that is broken in my condo. I could hire people myself and do it possibly, but why? It will get done eventually. Can I have an immediate impact? If no, I do nothing. Long term actions sure, I do whatever preparing needs to be done for whatever situation but not giving a gently caress is literally not caring.

It isn't an attitude, it isn't badassery, it's refusing to let anyone control you by controlling what you get involved in. It's being in control of yourself.

This doesn't mean don't care about the things you like or love. Fight for those things. Make clear your stance so doubt can't be cast. Remove toxicity from your life. Like that one mooch always bumming rides or talking to that one person you don't even really get along with. I removed a poo poo load of my friends thanks to this last election. I have no problem not talking to any of them again. Even if they went back to childhood.

Surround yourself with people you aspire to be. Remember that your environment dictates the type of people that will be with constantly.

I lose control sometimes, and I hate it. I value what control I have over the items I have so I am very selective on what I will invest in.

I hope this helps? I always feel weird giving these things because I'm broken, people typically don't like me, and I'm still figuring this out myself.

It makes sense, and i appreciate the pov at all times

This is correct in general, but the details are a bit off. My wife's unit didn't blame me, exactly, but during the course of the different investigations they suggested I was lazy and unsupportive. Some of those comments came from people I'd never met, some from people who knew me. As to my part, I probably could have done more. Beyond that they had nothing to do with the story. Her unit, it's worth pointing out, were the ones saying "hey, she needs help" and their higher headquarters said "has she completed suicide prevention training?"

I have gotten my benefits, which took awhile because a lot of them depend on the outcome of the LOD investigation, which always take forever. The ID card issue was settled within a month but is noteworthy because the conversation that took place in the office included statements like "deceased soldiers' survivors aren't entitled to benefits past the soldier's ETS date" and "dependent IDs become invalid the moment their sponsor dies," both of which are aggressively false.

My real issue is the extent to which casualty assistance seems to be broken. The casualty assistance office I worked with had no idea how to get a W-2. They had no idea how to settle estate matters. They were actively uninterested in helping beyond token lip-service.

The only matter that's unresolved is that I've been trying to get a response from the Army saying "yes, this is broken. Here's what we plan on doing." Maybe I'm pissing into the wind, but it burns me up to think that what happened to me will happen to someone else. They've spent the last year telling my senator's office "this isn't us, call the VA about it instead" and that just pisses me off.

On that note, I got a phone call this morning from the SES in charge of the Army's suicide prevention program. She said she read my letter and will be making changes and also calling the people in charge of all the ID card stations and casualty assistance to let them know what happened to me.

That's all fine and dandy, but this is the person who signed the letter calling my wife the wrong name. At least I know for sure that she's actually read the letter this time.

Also, do I really want to go to the press with this? That just opens me up to "hey, these reports say you're a lazy dirtbag who didn't help her either!"

Only edible things are cough drops, you can mail them because they are considered candy.

Besides that, nobody really needs anything. There's only so much you can get and everything else gets tossed or locked away until the end. Books you can send, but they have to be military themed. Good time to send history books, that's what I spent my evenings and other sporadic free time doing.

We had a trainee receive a care package that was like 3/4 contraband (high end booze, a big-rear end knife), but it was from his grandpa, and included a picture of grandpa next to his Corsair in Korea between CAS missions for the Pusan perimeter and also some old-school pin-ups that can't be hung up in a government building, but we didn't want to throw it away. So we just put it under lock and key until he graduated and asked him to tell grandpa that the military had changed since the 50s.

For basic news and maybe some basic essentials that are nice to have like spare socks/blousers/generic hygeine items.

For AIT, YMMV, as AITs have widely varying standards of what they do or don't allow.

Sorry I fudged some stuff up. I forgot what got resolved and some other things.

As for the press thing, people could use that sure, but if it wasn't true and you have people that could back that, it appears as an attack on your character as a strawman tactic. It's a toss up, but you are right. It would be very intrusive.

As it happens, it might not even be necessary. Yesterday I emailed that colonel who contacted me after I responded to the letter that called my wife the wrong name. He started making calls and today I received a phone call from the SES who signed that letter and then a phone call from the colonel who runs the office that trains casualty assistance officers. In the course of the conversation, I've learned some of the things I had issues with have changed (for example, I was eligible for travel pay to and from my wife's funeral. The funeral was in January, the casualty assistance center [which, it turns out, is completely different from the casualty assistance officers: one's a civilian office, the other is a .mil function and they're run by different people] gave me the form to fill out at the end of May, and I didn't get paid until August, before which I had to contact the IG because the casualty assistance idiots had stopped responding to my requests for updates. Travel vouchers for survivors are now part of the casualty assistance officer's checklist, is handled directly by the .mil office, and is a "this must be done within 30 days item).

It turns out that I was supposed to have received an official response to my concerns but never received the letter.

Anyway, once we established my beef is with the DA civilians in the Casualty Assistance Center and not with my Casualty Assistance Officer, she said she'd have the person who runs that department contact me. She told me to call her if I don't hear anything by Friday afternoon.

Reading between the lines, it sounded almost like I'm an urban legend at HRC.

"Legend has it there's a military survivor who got ultra turbofucked by the Green Weenie."

"No way. Too much poo poo went wrong all at once for that to happen. People fall through the cracks, sure, but nobody falls through the cracks in each step of the process"

"It's true! I knew a guy who said he had a buddy who saw a copy of the letter..."

I transferred to one of my downtrace units about six months ago because it’s literally next door to where I work and it beat the five hour drive each way for drill.

USARC came out with a new policy this summer (SMAPP) that outlines reclassing soldiers into critically short MOSs, and for a few of them they’ll use the reclass school in lieu of NCOES. I inquired about it and my UA did an RFI. Higher (my old unit) is telling him no because the unit is priority one. I don’t know much about mob policies, but I’m an admin guy so I told him to ask if they had that policy in writing. He sends me the traffic today and in it the BDE Ops says he thinks that policy is classified, but isn’t sure.

Does that sound legit? I’ve gotten the green weenie my fair share of the time, but in my nine years I’ve never had someone’s school or transfer held up because the unit was in an available year. If we had mob orders I’d understand, but we don’t.

So the jist is that by reclassing it will take the place of like BLC/ALC/SLC or something? Seems like a weird policy to have classified to me

Retrowave Joe
Jul 20, 2001

The jist is right, but that policy isn’t the one they’re saying is classified. It’s the one saying that if a unit is priority one (which I guess is what replaced the Available year from the old ARFORGEN cycle) that a Soldier can’t reclass or transfer.
