At my old university they would put out the campus manger at the beginning of December. Despite being literally 15 feet from the security guard building, someone managed to steal the baby Jesus. I think it was stolen by a conservative Catholic because it "miraculously" returned on Christmas morning, the time when you're supposed to have Jesus in the display.

Forgive me I'm too lazy to search through the thread. It's probably been mentioned. But I'm wondering what the goons collective is on the tithe? I waiver between *yes good thing* and *no you're probably doing shady poo poo* I'm interested in hearing peoples' opinions, though.

You should contribute to the church you go to freely, donating an amount within your means. If your church is checking your tax returns for 10% then maybe that is not a good church.

One of my coworkers had a tithe on her childhood allowance. So yeah, not the sort of thing you want to make into an absolute. Off the top of my head, the New Testament seems more concerned with giving what you have (the widow at the Temple), giving what you promised (Ananias and Saphira), or just giving everything (sell everything you own...).

the above two posts are the correct answers, imo. you should definitely give what you can, but don't ruin your life over it. i saw a post in /r/personalfinance a while back where the OP and his family (wife and kids) were eyeball deep in debt and on the verge of being evicted, but he wouldn't stop giving like 20% of their paychecks to the church (they were mormon though, and mormons are all hosed up generally)

I waiver between *yes good thing* and *no you're probably doing shady poo poo* I'm interested in hearing peoples' opinions, though. With respect to tithing, I'm reminded of my favorite line from Deuteronomy: "When you harvest your fields, don't pick your vines clean or gather fallen fruit. Leave these for the poor and the stranger." I take that to mean that even if you aren't a farmer, leave something of your income for people who are vulnerable. In a perfect world, an organization like a church will perfectly disburse the funds donated to those in physical and spiritual need. But every organization on Earth that I've known has earned at least some of the skepticism an outsider might have. So to me, the applicable part of the message is that you should set aside some income (and 10% may be a fair percentage for most earners) for a good, needy cause, either directly or indirectly.

Keromaru5 posted:One of my coworkers had a tithe on her childhood allowance. Yeah, my parents made me pay tithing on my allowance as a kid. (they were Mormon, how did you know?) It pissed me off and I stopped doing it the second I had more control over my own money. As The Plegamatist said, Mormons are hardcore about tithing. It's not optional unless you want a serious talking-to from the bishop. And of course there are a lot of stories in Friend/New Era/Ensign about people who had basically nothing and paid their tithing anyway and were rewarded with blessings for it.

We have a church tax, generally 1-2% depending on the parish, that is collected by the state along with your other taxes and who then gives it to the church, which pays the state for the service. Remnant of the state church(es)? Yes! Discourages donating and makes you think you don't need to since you get taxed already? Sure! Handy for calculating the next year's budget? Oh thank goodness, I have 4 sub-budgets to calculate this week.

Adding on to tithechat, according to Thomistic teaching you are only supposed to give from your extra goods, not from what you need to feed your family and all that. Also note that the idea is of giving goods, not cash. Like we used to give tomatoes from our garden to the cloistered Poor Clares, which had the added bonus of getting to chat with them through the grille.

I'd like to raise goats rather than sheep. Goat dairy is so rich and tasty, and I'm not all that into wool. Goat meat is the most delicious meat in the world, but it's likely I'd be vegetarian if I had to see the animals that get slaughtered for my plate.

Ceciltron posted:I've known people who raise animals and it actually never bothers them, goats are fun and delicious! Yeah I grew up on a working beef cattle ranch and did a ton of hunting and fishing. As long as you don't get too attached to your animals it's not really a problem eating them. It helps that cattle are dumb as rocks and not very charismatic, so none of them were pets. Goats you have to milk twice a day which is a bit more commitment than I want right now.
