If not through outright political colonialism and dominance, then through the dominance of financial instruments and capital exploitation. One could easily supply a high standard of living with a multitude of proper woodworking techniques given the wood (trees) to work with, and proper knowledge of flora/fauna and agriculture/hunting. One with improper knowledge in similar scenarios would have lower quality of living for the same value potential. If properly supplied and implemented a high standard of living can be less detrimental than whatever garbage system we're using right now to maintain the current illusions. If it genuinely frustrates you pener, then you probably need more perspective: like 99% of the US population doesn't believe in communism, and socialism = welfare state as far as they're concerned, because that's what decades of conservative messaging has told people. That this has only backfired on right wingers, by making people more interested in socialism (not scaring people off of the welfare state like conservatives wanted), is something that is Good, not something to be frustrated by. Chill out.

Socialism would have much more appeal to the average American if most people understood it as "workers democratically governing their workplaces", rather than just "government welfare programs". One of the best ways to appeal to the average person is to frame socialism as an extension of democracy into all of the various parts of their everyday lives that they have no control over.
