People have been saying sours are gonna be the next big thing for a few years now and I just don’t see it happening. Takes too much effort to make a decent sour

Over the top stouts and porters are the big thing now imo. Kinda good because dark beers are great. Kinda bad because WOW there are some hosed up insane stouts out now that have more in common with a candy coffee beverage from Starbucks than with actual beer

So yeah fads are dumb just shut up and drink

candy flavoured stouts bad. imperial and other high abv stouts good

What is a good cocktail bar in SF, preferably in the SOMA/FiDi/Mission area?

I don'tcare about ambiance, if it's a dive bar with a savant bartender I'm ok with that.

I usually go to the Hay Adams when in DC, they're kind of stuffy though and it took a long time for them to be like of he's one of those tech guys

so basically craft cocktails, loungey, willing to pay but anything more than 15 for a manhattan is a rip.

Smugglers Cove has good rum drinks, it’s their thing, also pirate themed

The View atop the Marriott Marquis is a bit pricey but their cocktails are decent and as they say they have a great view, you might also meet some interesting characters

I’ve heard good things about Alembic but never been there, also it’s far away

you could go to DNA Lounge

you could go to Japantown and go to “Dimples” (be sure to read the Yelp reviews so you know what you’re getting into)

lots of choices, and then there are plenty of restaurants that have decent to good bars too

The View sounds cool.

Last time I went to DNA lounge it was like, wall to wall people could barely move, do they have a sit down bar?

I know they had some back and forth about opening a pizzeria or something

Edit: lol @ the tenderloin blowjob bar suggestion. sounds fun for people watching but looks a little far from the bart for my taste

if you end up in the mission, go to abv on 16th near guerrero, or trick dog on 20th between florida and alabama. if you're in soma then observe your surroundings for a bit and decide "gently caress it let's go to tempest for $2 pbr". if you're in the financial district, kill yourself

i like bourbon and branch because i am The Ultimate Hipster

they have an interesting rotating menu, you need reservations, and it's relatively quiet cause they kick you out for loud talking or using your phone

he didn't say the loin but ok if you end up there, don't go to bourbon and branch, gently caress that poo poo. go across the street to tradition, get the rum drink, it comes in a skeleton face cup barons style. if you don't like it there go a block up to rye. but don't make a reservation at a bar where you need a password lmao

it feels like breweries and beer nerds are heading towards craft lagers as the next trend. it went ipa, stout, and we are currently in the age of the sour, but i think you'll see a big return of lagers (lagers, kolsches, pilsners, marzens, etc).

not to say ipas, stouts, and sours won't continue to be huge and crazy hyped but i've seen a lot of people starting to express a, "let's drink beer that tastes like beer" mentality. I think it's partially from fatigue with ipas, stouts, and sours but i also think it's a continuation of beer elitist mentality. oh you don't like lagers/think they're boring? enjoy your diabetes pastry stout pleb.

lagers will never have the hype, insane lines, or secondary prices but i think you'll see lots of beer nerds harping on people who don't appreciate lagers. john laffler, owner/brewer at off color and formerly goose island, predicted this trend in an interview because breweries overbuilt and have excess capacity.

i'm ok with this. i don't like super hoppy beer or sours. too often I'd be at "craft" beer places that had a bunch of hop glasses or a token guiness. then everything became like, 25% imperial soviet stouts and like, i like dark beer but i like having 2-3 over an evening, slow yer roll. so then i started mostly sticking to yuengling but being able to get something a step up from that would not be bad

when I’m out I’ll often pick a Firestone Walker 805 as a nice all-round relaxing beer to drink on its own or with a meal, it’s not “challenging” or “overpowering” it’s just “beer” and good at being that

Manhattans are fun to drink when you're out with people because it turns into that Casino Royale scene where everyone at the poker game is like "actually, hang on, give me one of those too"

Also it's a good tasting drink. Make it with rye
