Yeah, for some reason the HD598's and the M50X (make sure you're getting the X version which has the detachable cable) uses the same proprietary 2.5mm cable end that has a locking mechanism.

I just bought some Sony XBA-100s, which I had been looking at for some time. At least for the moment they are my favorite single BA earphones. Maybe after the newness wears off I'll go back to my Final Heaven IVs but we'll see; these seem clearer to me in the mids.

Awesome, yeah I already have the M50x so maybe I'll sell my AD700s and get some 598s. The AD700s having a 50' non-detachable cord is pretty annoying.

Not sure if this is a good thread for this question, so feel free to redirect me.

Does anyone know what underlying technology Alienware Sound Center uses? Is it just a gloss of paint and an equalizer sitting on top of Windows' default sound system? I'm debating getting Dolby Atmos for :10bux: (actually 15) because I like Dolby Headphone so much. Tell me how this is terrible and I'm doing something wrong, or otherwise.

You can look through my post history for a big writeup on virtual surround for headphones. Not sure what Alienware Sound Center uses, but for Dolby Atmos (for headphones), it's pretty drat good, except for one glaring flaw:

It sets the speaker count in Windows to 2. Most games default to the speaker count that Windows has set, so those games would only output 2 channels, and the DSP will only be processing sound from 2 channels, which totally defeats the purpose of Dolby Atmos.

Certain games let you set the speaker count so those are fine. Video files with 5/7 channels are fine depending on the player you use. But yeah, it's pretty disappointing so I wouldn't pay for it until they patch it. There's a free 30-day trial so you can try out and see what I mean for yourself.

Fidelio X2 vs Beyer DT880 250ohm

Well I've had the 880s for a few days now and I gotta say, the X2s do just about everything better. 880s one victory is vocal clarity, but the wider soundstage makes them sound a little airy and un-natural. They are very analytical and detailed but music lacks only what I can describe as "Body" - like drinking weak coffee vs rich thick french pressed coffee. That said, they sound fuller than my older AD700s (not the new Xs I havent tried those)

I've listened to the X2s for the last couple of years so maybe my brain is just tuned to them. Also find the bigger heavier X2s more comfortable, weird

tldr: more expensive headphones sound better than less expensive ones

Does anyone think BAs (or hybrids) will eventually become standard for mid-range and up consumer earphones? I don't think I could go back to dynamics for anything but bass. The only BA earphone I've tried that I haven't really liked was Audio-Technica's CKB70s.

Also, how are people storing multiple earphones in a way their cords hang straight? I've been using those magnetic clips by Zero Audio etc and hanging them from my fridge but that's kind of ugly. Is there some obvious other way I'm missing?

Unlikely. BAs are more difficult and costly to manufacture compared to dynamics as they have many more moving parts, and many of those parts require precision machining.

Besides, as progress is made in improving BAs, the same sort of progress is being made in dynamics that can close the gap in terms of detail retrieval like specialised driver materials, lightweight voice coils, better damping techniques etc. There are some truly exceptional dynamic IEMs out on the market these days from the likes of Vsonic, JVCs, TFZ, HifiMan, Focal and Sennheiser. Hell, Sennheiser's flagship IEMs are single-driver dynamics.

Hybrids, or really any multi-driver headphone designs also have issues beyond even that. Crossover design, phasing issues, impedance mismatches, driver synchronization, acoustic design of the shells... There's a reason why it took a long time for hybrids to catch on - they're difficult to tune and design. The first consumer hybrid IEMs came out in 2007 with the UE Super.Fi 5 Pro but didn't really catch until the release of headphones like the Sony XBA-H1.

Greetings fellow headphone purchasers.

I had been waiting on a deal on the 598s for like years after missing amazon having them at $100 on black friday so gently caress it, this is a deal.

My only concern is I'm coming from cheaper closed back headphones and do a lot of hanging out in VoIP channels/gaming, so I'm not sure how the open back design will play with my mic that I clip to my headphone cable. Anyone rocking a similar setup have any trouble?

It should be fine, they're open but they're not too loud that it'll be a problem. Plus Discord and such have pretty good mic input sensitivity options.

I don't have an issue with AD700's with the same setup and those are pretty much cheeseburger speakers attached to your ears in terms of how loud they are for people around you.

I got the Plantronics Voyager Focus, they're pretty good. I'd say they're ok music headphones but they're great for calls, wireless with good range, onboard mute with reminder, the mic is good at rejecting noise, the noise canceling isn't great but I don't bother using it. I have 1-3 hours of phone calls a day though so if you don't need the convenience features get dedicated headphones. I prefer over-ears for the office.

I need a good pair of headphones and an amplifier for the purposes of semi-professional mixing in a production environment. I've been looking long and hard at the Sennheiser line, particularly the HD 800 and 800s because of their supposedly amazing imaging. The problem I'm anticipating with those is that they apparently don't have great low end articulation relative to competitors, and seeing as most of the stuff I work with is rather bass-heavy, that probably seems like a bad move. Every website or blog I lookup tends to throw a bunch of contradicting answers at me too, any suggestions?

My Sennheiser HD555 broke one too many times after a decade of use. I just want something with accurate enough audio representation for the human ear and good build quality. Can I just buy something that feels nice or do I still have to worry about bass boosting and crap? I'd rather not navigate the cesspool that is the audiophile community.

You should find H2s on sale for about half their retail price a lot of the time. I have a pair, and they are definitively worth that, but not worth full retail. Too cheaply built for that. I haven't tried the H6 myself, but they get great reviews, and are decently priced, even more so preowned. Be aware there's a version 1 and version 2 of them. The 2 is slightly better, but the 1 isn't a bad choice in any way.

The H7/8/9 all get great reviews, but for all of them there are options that sound just as good for less money. They are luxury goods instead of appliances, and should be approached and purchased as such.

Well I have now tried $60,000 headphones. I kept the music choice pretty basic with some Daft Punk, Dire Straits, Madrugada and AC/DC. It was songs I've played hundreds of times to test my own equipment, so I know their sound pretty well.

It wasn't really the religious experience that some people described having. It was more like there were absolutely no weak spots to find anywhere. They were of course the best sounding headphones I've ever heard, but I wouldn't pay $59,850 to upgrade to them from a pair of DT770s. I've heard headphones that were more neutral and analytical, but the HE-1s sounded like they were meant to enjoy hours and hours of music, not to monitor recordings.

It was first when I had walked out of the listening room and talked to the Sennheiser rep I realized I had played louder than I ever had before, and my ears were totally shot.
