Blistex posted:Even worse than that is a lot of them are something like 10% actual solar panels (around the outside edges of the farm) and the rest are fake. That way you can get a guy with a drone to take a lot of photos and brag on China Daily that the mainland is leading the way in solar generation. Also, a lot of their actual panels are a generation or two behind because western companies are making them back home using automation and are also tired of China stealing their designs and trying to put them out of business. I've told people this and they say that's just racism and ask for sources because everyone knows china is like 20 years ahead of the world on solar and green technology and straddling buses. Everyone knows that China is 20 years ahead on solar and green technology. Other things everyone knows about China: - Would never export food during time of famine. - Has great air quality. - Does not produce poison baby formula. - Instances of sexual harassment very rare, unlike the decadent West. - Hot water good for healthy.

big time bisexual posted:i love the posters in that thread not understanding a) how dumping works nor b) how having the majority of the world's solar panels be produced in a country with lax enforcement of pollution controls isn't the best idea if you care about the environment. Solar cells fundamentally aren't 'green' if you're talking about deploying them anywhere that's not a scorching, lifeless desert where nothing exists or some cat's rooftop. This has nothing to do with the amount of sunlight available but everything to do with what you displace when you bulldoze a ton of trees to install solar cells. For the same GWh to net CO2 impact, you're actually better off just using a gas or oil plant and planting a forest in the area you didn't use for a solar farm - and that's honestly unlikely to change. What will change is that solar cells will get cheap enough that you can opportunistically deploy them to rooftops and big dead places like deserts, which will be helpful but not solve everything. This is what galls me the most about the whole "China leads the way in solar" bullshit. It's wrong on almost every level. Even if all of those cells were real and even if they were all powering homes, it would STILL be more net polluting than just building a loving modern natural gas plant and letting a big area return to wild forest. But this is China, so appearing to be good for planet healthy is way more important than actually being good for planet healthy.

most of the solar production in china is actually from scorching lifeless desert, they just haven't hooked up those areas to any provinces actually requiring power yet

• President Xi Jinping was elevated to the same exalted status as China’s founding father, Mao Zedong, and his ideas were enshrined in the constitution of the Communist Party as its twice-a-decade congress came to a close. “Xi Jinping Thought” is based, in part, on restoring China to greatness, a goal that has guided Mr. Xi’s policies. His new status sends a clear signal that any challenge to him now amounts to ideological heresy.
