Aircraft Conditional Orders
1. All aircraft: RTB when "Shotgun" (Fighters: BVR missiles gone, Strike Aircraft: Air-to-surface weapons gone).
2. If our CAP is inactive and enemy fighters are airborne: all strike and support aircraft RTB.

Rules for the operation.
1. Hard Deck: 15,000 foot hard deck. DO NOT FLY LOWER THAN THIS, UNLESS NECESSARY TO MAKE AN ATTACK.
2. EMCOM: OECM = ON, Radars = OFF (*except for the Argus, Prowler, Reaper, and Gripens)
3. ROE: Return fire if fired upon + fire on all SuperSonics and UNICUM assets on sight (engage aircraft with Bisons when possible, use Gripens if needed)
4. No-Fly Zones: Do NOT allow aircraft to get within firing range of the Western Buk.
5. Limited Weapons: Only use the Meteors and SDBs on the Gripens as a last resort. For example, if the Bisons have fired off all their BVR missiles.
6. Tanking: Only refuel when 10% of fuel remains.

We're going to be doing this operation in phases.

Phase 1: Gjader Takeoff and Assembly
@1030 hours
Launch in this order @ Gjader and meet up at the FORM-UP POINT. Do NOT leave until all aircraft have taken off and climbed.
1. I-SPY (Argus AEW&C)
2. Windmill (EA-6B Prowler SEAD)
3. Typhoon Flight (Tornado SEAD)
4. Hurricane Flight (Tornado SEAD)

8. Sidearm Flight (Gripen Strike)
9. Griffin Flight (Gripen CAP)
10. Tankers

Phase 2: Moving Out
@1100 hours
The strike package heads north. Keep the Gripen CAP leading the way.

Phase 3: Reaper Takeoff
@1130 hours
Grimm Flight (Reapers) takes off @ Airport Vršac and heads to the target area at max speed.

Phase 4: Vršac Takeoff and Assembly
@1145 hours
Before the strike package is overhead...Herd Flight (Bison CAP) and Stampede Flight (Bison CAP) take off @ Airport Vršac and begin climbing to 20,000 feet at max speed. Link up with the strike package and lead them into the target area.
Whirlwind Flight (AMX A-11 CAS) takeoff and begin climbing to 15,000 feet. Link up with the other strike and CAS aircraft.
Tankers and I-SPY (Argus) orbit over Vršac to fulfill their mission.

Phase 5: Kicking in the Door
@1200 hours
Herd Flight and Stampede Flight (Bison CAP) move to screen the strike package. If any air targets appear, engage them. If the Bisons are lost, run out of fuel, or run out of BVR missiles, engage targets with Meteors from Griffin Flight (Gripen CAP).
Windmill (EA-6B Prowler) moves into jamming range of the southern and eastern radars. Gather ELINT.
Grimm Flight (MQ-9B Reapers) moves into camera range (100 nmi max) of Timisoara and spots targets.
Typhoon Flight fires ALARM missiles at the western and northern radars and SAMs.
Hurricane Flight fires ALARM missiles at the eastern and southern radars and SAMs.
If any radars, long-range SAMs, or short-range SAMs remain after the ALARM attack send in Knightrider Flight (Nighthawk SEAD) to bomb them.
If any enemy AA remains, engage them with SDBs from Sidearm Flight (Gripen Strike).

Phase 6: Dropping the Hammer

Who wants a belly rub??

Aren't we still having aircraft down for one mission worth of maintenance after they go up with weapons? That plan will leave us with what, four Gripens (which I may have just missed somewhere) for the next op? Related, it seems way better to keep the Prowler on all-jammer duty so we can reuse it than get to fire that one single HARM.

I think your logic in ROE #5 is backwards as well.

Here I was all set to be all "hey remember the Reaper has a ground search radar" but you already got that, so I'll just leave this comment here for anyone else writing up a plan.

If possible I would like to see ROE #5 changed to meteors reserved for gen 4.9 and above targets, or when there are no bisons available. If we can't set the generations to 4.9, I'd go with gen 5, no bisons available and manual firing on yoopers discretion.

Then you might as well fly all the Gripens with SDBs, because there is zero sign of gen 4.9 enemy airpower in the mission card or on the planning table.

Lets not ignore the possibility that the Romanian gov't might have some problems with a bunch of planes blowing stuff up in their country. And that they might have some more advanced stuff than what's listed on wikipedia(as yooper told us they might)

Passing this one on as well:

Unmanned air PMC: "The RVs of Northern Virginia"
Quick advances in drones during the late 2010s meant quickly changing laws regarding pilotless aircraft. There weren't that many people affected, but model aircraft clubs suddenly found that their planes were now drones and their airspace was off limits to them. The capitol region was especially hard hit, since it was controlled airspace for security reasons. The RC Plane Club of Northern Virginia was on its last legs, until one of their members won a record breaking lottery. He threw a bit of money towards hiring a lobbyist to "get us the ability to fly remote controlled planes again". Jack Abramof had, in that order, a mission, a fifth or two of vodka and a plan. Using the fact that they'd been toying with the idea of buying a military surplus drone with some of their money that could be flown remotely in less prohibitive airspace, he successfully got them clearance to operate drones and the ability to procure drones for contracts. Fortunately for them, it turned out that they were good at it, and any need to travel across the world for contracts could easily be spun as "family vacations". By now, they operate a comprehensive portfolio of drones, from the high end to the expendable. A relatively unique capability they offer is expendable drones at cost, in case a contractor needs pickets, a charge into overwhelming firepower or anything too risky to send an actually decent airframe or person at.

What a nice day for a gassing
I saw some requests for terrain imagery. The terrain around Timisoara is really flat, so instead I'll focus on the AN/TPS-70 radar to the east. That radar will see any strike package as it is approaching so we will probably want to kill it with little warning.

The AN/TPS-70 radar can see almost all the way to our base. We're below the horizon, but when flying at altitude we will be visible.

Since we're going in at daytime, our F-117Cs risk getting spotted visually if they fly in high, or even by the radar itself if they get too close. Instead, we might want to use one of the more interesting features about this area, the Carpathian mountains.

Seen here is the relevant part of them, the Romanian Southern Carpathians. The yellow ring is the maximum range of our ALARM missiles.

These entire plains are in radar shadow, anything flying low here will be hard to spot for the AN/TPS-70.

There are two valleys both pointing directly at the radar site, which means we should be able to get a shot down either of these without exposing ourselves by flying over ridges. Possible flight paths marked in blue.

The southern valley is the direct approach. It has a convenient little hill/mountain blocking the line of sight from the radar right until we get inside firing range.

However, the southern valley opens up, exposing any plane or missile flying down it to the sensors in Timisoara.

The eastern valley is probably the safer approach, we are covered by tall mountains all the way until the firing point, and the missiles or planes are not exposed when approaching the radar.

edit:
Once the AN/TPS-70 is down, flying the direct approach, skirting around the Belgrade exclusion zone at minimum altitude gets you almost within ALARM range without getting exposed.

This little ridge next to the forward base Bacarruda has in his plan gives you cover until you pass it.

edit 2:
If the AN/TPS-70 is still active it WILL see a strike force taking this path, so it needs to be taken out first.

Once a flight crosses this ridge, south of Airport Vrsac, it's exposed to the AN/TPS-70

Again, Anta, your three-dimensional intel presentation skills are on point, this kind of stuff will really help our brave boys in the mission planning office. The radar shadow zone and approach vectors for dealing with the AN/TPS-70 are the sort of thing that aren't immediately obvious with conventional 2-dimensional topo maps.

Gjader-Hired Goons Evil Lair is filled up.

All of our nice planes are indoors while the big stuff is outside along with some of the MIG's.

In regards to the mission, the intel provided is going to be pretty close to spot on. If I say MIG's, and hint at Starfighters, that'll be it. You won't run into Gen V NATO fighters unless I specifically foreshadow it. This is my way of shrinking the load on you guys. If it were an in-game scenario you could just reload and start over, that's not something we can do here. As such our newest ground mercs will be intel focused. More to come!

...on the plus side I'm feeling much more angry now than I expected so this totally helps me get in character.
Hâyard Günnes, allow me to present OPERATION WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE

This is a three stage operation. In the first stage, planes are launched from Gjadër and our stealth bombers take out the radar on Vârful Padeş. In the second stage, a flight of Tornadoes conducts SEAD on Traian Vuia Airport, knocking out the Buk platoon and the radar there, and our CAP is launched from Vršac Airport. In the third stage, strike and close air support missions close on Timișoara.

I want to quickly mention: yes, I use SDBs in this mission! The SDB is designed for precision strikes that minimize collateral damage. This is the perfect mission for it! We expect low air threat, the air defence that can pop up around the target will be mostly MANPADs that can't shoot them down, and we need to watch our collateral. In addition, the SDB is very cheap, enough so that unlike the Meteor we can use it quite a bit without blowing the budget. We'll have missions where we don't want SDBs, but this mission isn't one of them.

Why pick OPERATION WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE?
- You like the idea of nape-of-earth flight.
- You want to expose the F-117s to as little risk as possible.
- You aren't sure how many ALARMs the local radar and the Buk will take.
- You want to blow up the Seattle Supersonics on the ground.
- You think that 35 Brimstones is enough to destroy the quick-reaction force.
- You want our close air support planes to stay at 4-6nm range.
- You want small diameter bombs for precision bombing.
- You're easily impressed by lines drawn on maps.

They had acquired two more of these Reapers now, and he was also supposed to train the new pilot who got assigned the second one. Something about a transfer of knowledge. Command was evidently possessed of a notion that operating a Reaper required more than typing in GPS coordinates and panning a camera around, but whatever the reason, MEAT had thanked them and accepted the post gratefully. There was no real reason to correct them. Active duty meant more money, after all. That was why he was here, wasn’t it?

This Reaper was different. It was ever so slightly newer, and on top of that, it was British, a fact that was easily overlooked until one saw the “ROYAL AIR FORCE” markings that had not yet been painted over. Neither of those things bothered MEAT much. What did was its equipment—with the recent international governmental crackdowns on sales of advanced equipment, this Reaper didn’t have access to the Gorgon Stare system. It instead had Brimstone missiles. Sure, his old Reaper Silver had had the option of Hellfires and a variety of bombs that it could carry, but he had never been asked to employ them—the Gorgon Stare sensor pods were too valuable. This one, though, all its sensors were internal, leaving the hardpoints for weapons only. This Reaper wasn’t here to save lives. It was here to take them.

MEAT completed his third lap around the aircraft and, satisfied there was no obvious visible damage, used the nearby maintenance and diagnostic control console wired up to the Reaper to order it to go through a system start. It was a slow but automated process, just like everything else involving these drones. He watched as indicators showed the electrical system initializing and preparing to start the engine. “Reaper A.” That’s what command had named it. That wouldn’t do at all; mechanical, no personality, no spirit. This aircraft was a weapon, an instrument of destruction, and it deserved an appropriate name. He’d considered Silver a friend of sorts, in some strange sense; was this Reaper as deserving? Another moment and the engine started, making the hangar noticeably noisier.

What a noisy hangar it was, here in Albania. Following the Hired Goons around was proving to be quite the world tour. Africa, to the Bering Strait, and now to the remnants of Yugoslavian ambitions where he stood in some kind of bunker-hangar that he had only ever heard of in trashy airport novels. Being here felt off in a way he couldn’t quite place. In fact, he’d considered retiring after Silver was shot down. While waiting for a refueling in Boston, he’d taken the time to call his older sister. They hadn’t spoken in years; in fact, only five times since he left Sioux Falls for Cairo almost four years ago. She was thrilled to hear he was still in one piece, especially after he told her he had signed up with a mercenary organization! She in turn was still working for a pharmaceutical company out of Ohio; as ever, the responsible member of the family. He explained his exploits, talking about how he spotted SAMs for his compatriots and directed ground forces’ actions. That is, until his Reaper was shot down. Where would he go from here? But before he could decide, Hired Goons command had called him to ask him to return to active duty as they had been gifted a pair of Reapers through circumstances that could as well have been an act of god for all the sense they made. Why did he agree to this, again?

MEAT realized the console was indicating all of the Reaper’s systems were online. How long was he standing here? He shook himself off and started down the checklist. Startup and self-test were good. Control surfaces responded as required. Throttle behaved as he expected. Radar, well, the radar didn’t work very well inside a hangar, but it did something, so he checked that one off anyway. And then there was the camera, the thing he was most familiar with, the reason he had stayed on as long as he had. The internal camera was still surprisingly good, even without the breathtaking capabilities of Gorgon Stare. MEAT panned the camera around, watching some of the base support crew scurrying about, preparing to receive a flight of counterfeit MiG-21s. Why the world needed more of that airframe, of all the possibilities, he had no idea. As he panned, trying to see if he could spot the Fishbeds, he thought he briefly saw static and swung it around a few more times. Sure enough, at one specific rotation and elevation the camera was generating nothing but noise. Maintenance must have not checked it quite that thoroughly. Understandable, really; they were far more concerned about the engine and control surfaces than a pinched wire or whatever was going on there.

Satisfied that the Reaper was in good enough shape to fly, he issued a power down command from the same maintenance control station. MEAT picked up the clipboard—maintenance needed notes. “Camera noise at X-15.41 Y+28.37,” he hastily scribbled down before checking the boxes labelled “Asset Purchase Approved by Inspector” and “OK to Re-Paint.” This was followed by applying no less than six signatures. Somewhere, a teenaged MEAT would have found the paperwork involved here deeply ironic. Eight years ago, working an office job to cover the rent, he daydreamed of being a pilot to escape the drudgery he faced every day. Instead, here he was, as close to his dream job as possible, and he was spending the evening filling out forms for an aircraft he couldn’t even climb into. There was probably some witty aphorism about the winds of fate to use here, but he couldn't remember any. “In the land of the blind...” no, that wouldn't work either.

MEAT slung the clipboard under his arm as the Reaper’s engine spun down. “What are we going to about you?” he asked it. There was no response save for the quiet hum of the ground power inverters. “Half-blind, but carrying one hell of a stick.” Well, it'd have time to learn not to be so shy with him.

Some distant laughter from behind made MEAT turn around to check if anyone was there. They weren’t; it must have been from somewhere deeper in the base. He had yet to learn the layout of this crazy Cold War relic.

“Let’s just pray control doesn’t order me to dive onto the deck again, hmm?”

MEAT gave a gentle pat to Reaper’s front—to him, its head—before stepping out of the hangar to head to where the second Reaper was parked. Was he already accepting this new craft, and with it, his new role? Sure, he’d painted targets for bombs before, but he’d never had to be the one to press the weapon release button. And that still left the other Reaper. He’d have someone to work with directly, now. Hopefully that guy was cool. MEAT hadn't met him and wasn't sure if he had even arrived yet.

He caught himself stopping at his old Reaper control trailer. They’d kept it after Silver was destroyed, both in case a replacement was purchased and because it was too expensive to just throw away. Of course, they’d even kept the doorknobs from that base, so it wasn’t much of a surprise that they’d keep the multi-million-dollar trailer, but now that there was a replacement it worked out well. Stepping inside, he flipped the light switch, then again, then a third time. The trailer hadn’t been hooked up to the base’s electrical grid yet. Great. Holding out a flashlight, he opened a small drawer at the back. It was right there on top—right where he’d left it. Nobody else had much of a reason to go inside the trailer, after all. MEAT held up the sign in his hands. “Meat Locker.” He’d be needing this again after all. He stepped back out into the night air, smiling to nobody in particular, and drove the sign into the ground outside the trailer. The new guy had his own trailer, anyway. This one would stay his.

MEAT was suddenly astutely aware that he was not the same man he was when he’d signed on with the Hired Goons in Angola. When the order would come through to launch those Brimstones, he knew he could, and he knew he would. And yet, his comfort with this scenario scared MEAT. Even just last year he would have never seen himself as someone who could willingly take a life. He’d never been one to fear change. So why was he so afraid of who he was becoming? After all, if not him, someone had to do it, so it wasn’t really that bad. He had of course signed on with a PMC. He knew what he was getting himself into even back then. And he could always do it better, more precisely, avoiding collateral damage, that sort of thing. It was of course always better to reduce the total harm done, and that meant him accepting this post was a good thing. Maybe command still wouldn’t load any weapons. Maybe he’d only be firing at known war criminals. Maybe it’d only be self-defense. He could still do good. He’d find a way to make it work. To make it right. Right?

Right?

Will this Reaper survive long enough for MEAT to bond with it? Find out next time!

Aside: what's the call for launching a Brimstone? I know Mavericks get "Rifle", is it that for every A2G missile?

Near as I can find, Rifle is generic for any AGM, like Magnum for any ARM launch

quote:

They had called him up, seemingly out of the blue. He had actually forgotten that he'd even put in the application, it was so long ago. The woman on the other end of the phone sounded pleasant, with a light Swiss accent. She told him that the Hired Goons had reviewed his credentials and that he should expect to receive a ticket to the AOO in the mail soon, assuming he was still interested. Getting hired on by mercs these days was a bit more common but still surprising to most, but it beat the hell out of flying mail around to rural airports in a Cessna and it paid good, so he figured, what the hell. Later on that evening, he went through his old documents and found his application. Sabotage. That was what he had put down as his call sign. "Must've been drunk when I put this in," he mused. Nothing to do about it now, Sabotage he was.

In the mail the next week a package of papers arrived. The instructions were pretty clear, fill out the documents, bring them with you to wherever the ticket was taking you. Flipping through the pages to the back revealed the aforementioned airline tickets. First from his hometown to New York, then a connecting flight to Paris, and finally another connecting flight to Belgrade, Serbia. It was this moment when he began to wonder exactly what he was getting himself into. It was well known at this point that Eastern Europe, and particularly the Balkans, had fallen into factional warfare between different parts of some company or other. Yugosomething was it's name, he couldn't quite remember. It was a mess over there and it seems like the Hired Goons were involved somehow. Still, the pay promised to keep him out of trouble for some time if he survived so it certainly seemed worth it.

The flights over were uneventful and upon arriving in Belgrade, he found his way to the ground transportation area where he saw a man holding a sign, it read simply "Sabotage". He supposed that must be him, and walked over to the man. He was a large man, clearly Slavic in descent, and he spoke with the kind of English you'd expect out of a man like this. "You are Sabotuzsh?" he asked. Sabotage simply nodded, and he motioned to follow him to a waiting car. It looked like fairly standard fare for transport in a part of the world that never really caught up after decades of communism, not pretty but not falling apart, designed to get the job done and not much more. It was a portent of things to come unfortunately, although Sabotage did not know this at the time.

The driver drove him over to another airport, a private one a few miles away where what was clearly a surplus Soviet era helicopter waited to transport him to the base. This particular chopper looked like it had seen it's share of calamity with patches welded over parts of the hull and one of the glass windows having a bullet lodged in it. The pilot seemed to think it would fly though, and true to Soviet engineering, fly it did. That was one thing you could always count on with old Soviet crap, it might not be pretty and it might need a swift kick sometimes, but it was reliable as all hell. In the cold, heat, rain, wind, or any other situation, you could always count on the fact that it would start and get you out of there.

A few hours later they had landed at the helipad in Albania. Surprising really that they would choose to base out of Albania, but at the end of the day it seems like it was cost that mattered more than anything, and I'm sure this place could be had pretty cheap. Especially for what it seemed they had got. Hardened shelters, plenty of space for AA defenses, a pretty easily guarded base. He supposed it was pretty decent all things considered. He had slept on the transatlantic flight and he wasn't terribly tired so he thought he'd head over and drop off the paperwork and see if he could get some time to check out his new bird. Following the signs that had "Office" written on them in what appeared to be Sharpie, he found is way to what looked like the base's former administration building, or what was left of it. Inside, it seems they had ripped out most of the insides and put some new walls up, a fresh coat of paint, and some assortment of very Spartan looking chairs. That's what communism gets you, chairs that work, not chairs that look good.

After dropping off the paperwork, he was driven out onto the tarmac in a golf cart. Seems like they flew these in as they were quite out of place on the very Soviet looking airbase. After zigging and zagging down a few taxiways, they arrived at a short row of what appeared to be 70's era MiGs. The driver pointed to a plane, 1st in the row, and said "That one's you, might want to take some time to familiarize yourself with her", followed by a short sigh. This was the second moment that Sabotage wondered what he had gotten himself in to. He knew merc's flew what they could find, but he really thought these were all scrapped by now, and yet, the plane had a shine to it, like it had never really seen any trouble. Thanking the man with a nod, Sabotage walked over to the plane. Painted on the side was a large "HG" with the company logo, and his name below the cockpit. Climbing up the stairs to the cockpit revealed the wing paint, which still looked as thought it was wet.

Finally reaching the cockpit, Sabotage looked inside, and to his surprise, the interior looked all new. Well, new-ish, it still had analog gauges and buttons, no fancy touch screens or HUDs like modern fighters had. It also appeared that someone was kind enough to label all the gauges and buttons in English, which was good because he couldn't read a drat word of Russian. Finally looking down at the seat he noticed a small book. Picking it up it has an outline drawing of the plane on the cover, and it read "MANUAL" at the top and "MiG-21bis Fishbed N (BISON)" at the bottom, along with what was presumably the manufacturer, and odd name, "Okuma-Haas-MoriSeki-Studer-MarkForged". He stepped over the side of the plane with a sigh and opened the book.

"Seems like I've got a bit of reading to do," he said under his breath.

This got to be a bit more than I had intended but oh well, origin stories do that sometimes!

Ask for a ballpark figure, we're a fictional PMC looking for flexibility in BVR load outs. Yooper can put it in the next big procurement phase as an option. A Meteor/cheaper BVR missile mix would be super convenient for us.

Right ! So they'd know how much those upgrades should cost so Yooper can make them an option.

I also believe they'd think our obsession with the Grippen hilarious, and they deserve a good laugh for making a good plane.

Right now, only two countries have planned to buy the Gripen NG Brazil and Sweden. So, there are two questions.

One, what medium-range air-to-air missile is Brazil putting on their Gripen NG? Several trade publications have suggested it's going to be the i-Derby missile. Still, I'd like to make certain so I can put the right missiles on my game models. Gotta get the little details right!

(If we can get the Brazilian jets in-game, they can be a stand-up for our Swedish birds)

Two are the Swedish Air Force's Gripens going to carry the Rb 99 (AMRAAM-120B) or the AMRAAM-120C air-to-missiles? I know the Swedish Air Force wants to use Meteor missiles on their Gripen NG. But I was wondering if the Swedes plan on also fitting them with Rb 99 missiles, just in case Meteor stocks run low or something.
