you know that sound an iphone makes when you plug it in? what does it mean when it makes that sound without being plugged in, or when it's been plugged in for an hour already. there are no notifications on the screen, but this seems to happen every couple of days

MBAM seems to catch more stuff than windows defender, but IMO I would lock up the admin account with your own password, give them a standard one, and prevent installation of any programs.

The term "virus" is also commonly, but erroneously, used to refer to other types of malware. "Malware" encompasses computer viruses along with many other forms of malicious software, such as computer "worms", ransomware, trojan horses, keyloggers, rootkits, spyware, adware, malicious Browser Helper Object (BHOs) and other malicious software.

the medical associations of “virus” are also unfortunate, it’s not a great metaphor but i don’t think there’s any confusion of its blanket use. yospos, the forum for computer doctors

yeah i just use defender on my own computers, but when attempting to fix some relatives' grandmaputers i have found that mbam locates more of the adware and poo poo that they have installed than defender does. at least it reports a larger number of dangerous files. doesn't really matter bc the end result is always a wipe and reinstall, but maybe mbam might be more proactive about keeping the adware out in the first place?
|
# ? Oct 30, 2017 01:12 |
adware is more of an end user problem, but, either way, id rely more on mbam scanner than on protection

but seriously an adblocker helps filter out a lot of the "click here for FREE VIRUS SCAN" stuff that installs malware and a focused policy of not downloading/looking at porn on the computer eliminates virtually all malware vectors there's no downside, both practically and morally

Use opendns umbrella prosumer, install ublock origin, use chrome or Firefox, tell them not to download any programs or add-ons, setup their pics to backup to icloud/Google drive. The default antivirus is fine and no antivirus will work if you download something and say this is safe and override it. Opendns blocks a lot of malware even if it is installed and gets past the av. It's $20 a year for three devices

Defende, EMET or whatever the baked-in stuff is for Win10 fall creators, put all their user data on onedrive and hope for the best. Maybe turn on the disk snapshotting while you are at it so you have quick restore. Train them to use edge if they are IE people otherwise Chrome/Firefox should do an ok job of blocking bad plugins.
