It was more than that, though. The twisted human voices, the sound of servos and meaty chunk with every footstep, the humongous cannons, the look of limbs after you finish converting an injured soldier into a mec pilot. All of it comes together into something unique despite being a derivative sci-fi idea. They were perfect.

The Halo Reach weapons pack is pretty good and doesn't increase load times as much as the other one I used. I never played Halo after the third one, but the sound effects are nice and models are good and fit in pretty well.

Haha I forgot the Viper King has a frost aoe. He froze all but one soldier, but luckily everyone else but a specter who didn't know what to do was already dead, and the king was more interested in shooting the objective instead.

So the original reboot (Enemy unknown/within) is on sale now - worth picking up? Or would the lack of xcom2 improvements annoy me?

The only improvement xcom 2 has is forcing timers on people which nerds will argue me over until they're blue in the face. They're different games and both excellent. Buy it so that we get more xcom games!

One of the things that I kind of miss about the original X-COM and especially Terror from the Deep was the lack of information you had on the aliens in the tactical layer. I remember being a kid and seeing a lobsterman appear for the first time and not knowing what the hell. I had built something like 30 sonic pistols and my entire squad was using them and tearing through all the little Aquatoids and Gillmen so when I saw this guy and unloaded around 10 shots into him and nothing happened and I had no idea why it was a crazy fun moment. I know it's not a really player-friendly approach that most games use these days but it was a very "X-COM" thing to happen, where you hop off the ramp and everyone starts dying and you have no fricken idea why. Hell I'd do autopsies just to know what the hell I was fighting. Now every time you see a new enemy Bradford or Shen hops on to tell you all about it and it's just not the same. They kind of captured that feeling with the Chosen again - when the Assassin first appeared out of nowhere, knifed one of my dudes to death, then sprinted halfway across the map while ignoring my overwatching troops, I definitely felt that old fear of the unknown feeling that made X-COM so powerful. As a kid that game was scary. I can still remember my pulse pounding as I ran around a darkened map wondering if a shot would come out of nowhere.

I mean you still kind of get that when you try to melee a muton and your dude gets disembowelled or the numerous surprises you get when you do a plotline skulljack that will leave your squad black and blue at the very least when you're playing blind. Or when you alpha strike an andromedon and "kill" it with your last action and oh, turns out it's not quite dead yet

It's a little academic to be trying to compare a refined strategy game in your 20s/30s to a game from the age of flailing around in a dark closet with a paper label marked 'Design' taped to the door that you played as a kid, no?

I like surprises but I would hate a game with random rear end enemies all the time. The longer I've played xcom2, less random it feels. Plus, I rarely see the full range of abilities so when enemies survive long enough to hurt, it really hurts. A perfect example is fighting 2 specters on a surgical mission. It was rough because if you don't kill the specter fast enough, it starts healing while killing your dudes. temple fucked around with this message at 19:29 on Oct 27, 2017 |

FYI in a pinch you can use revive protocol to recover a soldier that's been spectre'd. You're better off just killing the spectre since using the revive still leaves the spectre and the clone to deal with but like I said it can be handy in a pinch.

Revival Protocol also works on the knocked out resistance soldiers in various VIP missions. It makes life a lot easier. I now have plans to deal with all the chosen now and they're hilarious to me: Assassin: Weak to explosions, Reapers. Increased defense after the first shot and heals when you miss her. Solution: Endless Explosions Warlock: Who gives a poo poo now I have mindshields. Solution: Mindshields. Previously immune to mindshields and groundling. Previous solution: gently caress Hunter: Brittle, weak to Templars. Immune to explosions, can't be overwatched. Solution: Brace for someone to inevitably get flanktcrit, then rename SPARKs "Mister Fisto" and double team with Overdrive. Even better, both SPARKs now have Repair so if they're the ones flankcrit, it doesn't matter at all. The Berserker Queen is still worthless, the viper king is dead, and the Archon King will probably gently caress my day up so I'm not going to try until I get a couple stasis psi-ops. The Saboteur is now updated to WOTC. This one was a little more interesting due to having to dig into how Headshots against the Lost actually work so I could make Snap Shot work with them. Also should work with that new Beam Grenade Launcher mod that popped up (though I haven't actually tested that).

Why does this sectopod do 24 damage a turn rip SPARK e: Why is this map a bowl that funnels every single pod into one jesus gently caress. SPARK's dead, everyone else is beat to poo poo. Good thing I had the SPARKs as copies of each other so it can repair up a new one whenever I get ten thousand dollars to make a replacement Oh right I got breakthroughs to make things cheap as poo poo it only costs 80 bucks to make a new one. So that's a small mercy. e: So am I just going to fight one to two sectopods every single mission with predator armor from now on because boy is that loving impossible when I miss every shot under 90% against it and also bladestorm and melee abilities don't proc against its lovely buddies ever. Here's a remix for the dumb fanart pile The animation might be slightly too fast; also probably needs better text. Suggestions? Are there any popular/funny bugs that would fit? Found this https://i.redd.it/sl18kom66fjz.jpg when GISing to make the gif, but it is hard to extract a story/joke from one image without more to go on. RBA Starblade posted:e: So am I just going to fight one to two sectopods every single mission For some (not exactly incomprehensible) reason, improvising to deal with glitches and/or bullshit mechanics is more memorable than times when everything goes to plan. I guess it's just the strategic thinking that sticks for me, like how it is fun to come up with stupid gimmicks than it is to play them, such as 5bombers+1phantom, while the actual act of running that nuclear steamroller over sectopods and avatars is mostly forgettable... though DLC/longwar probably go far out of their way to nerf that kind of cheese. Maybe XCOM2 DLC produces more wtf/ohshit moments, if I ever get/play any of them. Watching someone else thinking-out-loud on youtube is unsurprisingly not quite the same.

I am objectively bad at this; im on my fourth try on a commander/ironman playthrough as i keep whipping my teams around the time mecs come into play. This time has gone the best so far bit im worried i made some choices that might cripple me in the long run: - i rushed magnetic guns so quick that i unlocked them before i have the alloys to build anything -- im goos for suppplies currently but im only just building resistance coms now, so i dont have any extra regions - i immediatley blew up my skirmisher first mission aftet i got her because im dumb and cars explode For reference im just at the point where snakemen are showing up and ive only researched mod weapons and mag guns. How screwed am i this time?

You should get an option to get a new skirmisher later and you can always buy alloys from the black market, so not too screwed. Just make sure to expand a rate you're comfortable with, you can overreach a little sometimes and stretch your resources thin.

Ugh lost my a team to some frosty snakeman bullshit, I must have switched off shens last gift instead of alien hunter so im going to make another go of it. I keep rushing mag. Guns too early i think, so if i could get my research priorities down better that may make a huge difference. This is probably an old question but whats the better starting facility to build, Guerilla Tacticts or Res. Ring?

I like resistance ring first. You can send out rookies on covert ops to get them to squaddie, and you can still have the GTS built in time for squad size 1.
|
# ? Oct 29, 2017 16:42 |
|
Ring, in my opinion. GTS is nice but the biggest effect comes from squad size + which you need a Sgt for, and you can almost certainly have your second building (so, GTS) up by the time you get a Sgt. Meanwhile, your Ring lets you power level a sniper (or anyone, I suppose, but snipers are weakest early) to get that Sgt faster while giving you other bonuses too.
|
# ? Oct 29, 2017 16:42 |

I don't find the ring useful early You get a covert action every month without it No avatar progress to lower No control of squaddie promotion No sergeants/lieutenants for hard missions The one big advantage of the ring is recruiting factions.

temple posted:I don't find the ring useful early And if you're not using some variant of Not Created Equal, promotion control isn't that useful. The need to run multiple teams means you'll want multiple soldiers of each class anyway and the more you promote the more everything will generally level out in terms of numbers. And you're getting the GTS second anyway. Its not a huge deal, but that's been what works for me for awhile. If NCE was back by default, GTS and promotion control would be a much bigger deal, I think.
