I used to be into 40k/Black Library fiction, but I wanna check out Iron Kingdoms stuff.

The two Malcontents books are glorious, I've heard nothing but glowing reviews from the Butcher of Khardov, and Instruments of War made me want to start collecting Skorne.
Since the Malcontents themselves come out to 16$ on Kindle... I gotta say it's worth it. Not bad coupons if you're looking to start the game, too.

CUPOLA MY BALLS
Played company of iron. I had rutger, taryn, thorn gun mages, and talon. I fought 6 dawnguard invictors, soulless escort, griffin, dawnguard sentinel sciyir

Man dawnguard aren't big fans of being set on fire. I pelted her whole list with incendiary shots one after another pretty much. She ended up burning most of her cards on injury checks. Griffin was able to charge my talon and put a lot of hurt on it, but crush plus pumping it to the gills with additional damage and boost cards wrecked it. Dawnguard officer finished off the talon, then rutger charged in and dropped the officer to injured. I ended up losing two gun mages eventually when two invictors made it to melee with them, but I won the objective in the end (the one to collect scrap and take it back to your deployment)

I thought it was fun, but with low model count armies nothing loving died because of how many rerolls and casualty ignoring cards you can get to protect a small force.

A friend of mine just inquired about commissioning me to paint his Gun Carriage. I don't reckon myself too highly compared to the other painters on SA (current Oath thread work: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3818112&userid=74387), but he seems to rate me better than his own skills at least, plus he's busy these days. He's intent on paying me for it since he's the sort of guy who wants to make sure his accounts are squared away (...not because he's an rear end in a top hat per se...he just wants to make sure everything's good for everyone).

Should the two of us agree on an hourly wage and then I make a good faith effort to track time spent? Or should I just name an amount? How much would a painter like me reasonably charge? I've never been commissioned before.

Generally, the exchange rate is something close to the cost of the model for general painting. You might want to put up a few of your pieces to get an idea. Personally, I've painted for supplies before, and this is a big figure. I'd start the bidding at an airbrush and compressor if you don't already have one.

Having tried to have stuff commissioned by a studio in the past, and then having gone to friends (more your situation) the cost is basically 4 times the cost of a charcter, 2 times the cost of a warjack, or the cost of the model for troops for a studio. (Which leads to weird stuff like Reinholdt costing 30 quid and a Kayazy Eliminator costing 10 quid to paint? It's always WAY more than I can afford). Mates rates around here tend to be the cost of the model, generally.

This! Also, has anyone got any hot takes on eGastonne now he's 'official'? I'm thinking of playing him with a couple of Mariners. I think that's probably wrong, but I'm doing it anyway. Carrying on with that theme, I'm going to play him with a full boat of Highshields (Arm 22 toughbois, yes please!) and a full unit of Croes with shieldguard that grant souls when they die.

Captainicus

I'm unsure if it will be good, but I'm going to try Llaelese resistance, putting 'give me souls' on a big unit of holy zealots with attachment, and putting armor+tough on some kind of heavy hitting menoth unit like knights exemplar or cinerators or something. I've just got some normal nomads and such for warjacks, planning on using the feat on turn one or two to stealth and try get close enough to get a first strike, rather than for re positioning with gun and run.

Its quite cool. I really like the possibility of making fluff armies that don't suck. The casualty roll stuff makes everything more durable than you think, everything activating individually is a bit weird at first too. If you can get a large hand size you can win with almost anything as well. There are so many 'boost', 'additional dice', and 'reroll' cards in the deck that you can just buff anything to get work done.

Things with multiple attacks are really strong since they can finish off an enemy most of the time. Grievous Wounds is also quite good.

Print off the deck and play a game, most of the mechanics are the same so its pretty easy to pick up. Only takes around 40mins-1hr for a game.

I played against Madrak1 champs and it was freakin' crazy, but I just assumed it was because I'm terrible against Trolls always. It did kinda feel like, I had the perfect army against him (Rhulic, lots of accurate powerful sprays, good combined arms) but it just felt like I didn't have enough points to beat everything he had, because it was all impossible to kill with focus fire from everything, lol.

I played Armored korps into it and couldn't crack it. Agonizer, krea and defenders ward turns them into a Mk2 troll brick. Tibbers was pretty important too. - even if I did manage to crack it, I'd have to deal with that shithead, who also conveniently was able to threaten me and shieldguard for the limited ranged that I had.

Does Company of Iron use different unit cards than WMH? War Room wants to charge me again and that seems stupid if they're the same thing I already own.

I guess they changed a few abilities on the cards as explained in the rulebook, but otherwise the cards are the same.

Paying for war room again seems dumb as hell, and thus I didn't do it.

I explained myself poorly. What was in the Xerxes list exactly? Seems sort of similar to what I did, but I've been underwhelmed by Cetrati's staying ability. Too much stuff can just chew them up, such as Troll Champs in Band of Heroes or Dread Rots just in general.

Some of the cards are slightly different - wording on abilities like Berserk changed. I’d wait a couple weeks to see if the CoI cards end up in the cards database.

I thought stuff like that were just based on the generalized differences in the game, meaning with WMH cards and the CoI rulebook and errata you could play. Meaning things like Channeller and Battle Wizard get changed to match the changes in CoI.

Maybe, but there’s no real way of knowing what was changed and what wasn’t. If I look at a regular Doom Reavers card it says Berserk only triggers on Destroyed. I have no way of knowing that it added “or Injured” on the CoI card. That change isn’t a given based on just the rule book.

I'll be trying this out on Thursday. Sort of surprised there's no gobber chef in there to fill the point and get a solo for flag scenarios, but it's an obvious add on my part.

So this document is apparently going to have a list of specific rules changes like that

http://files.privateerpress.com/companyofiron/COI_RulesAddendum.pdf

But it doesn't have everything listed at the moment. Hopefully they'll have a comprehensive list or quickly release the cards. I think pretty much anything that triggers off of 'destroyed' is probably changed to 'destroyed or injured' but I'm also not going to go through every card in the game to verify that :v.
