I like loot when it’s possible to pick up some powerful gear and become powerful yourself for a while like in Diablo 3. It’s real bad when it seems to have no effect on gameplay at all like Destiny 2.

The White Dragon posted:imo rpg elements are something that should never be used as a gate but instead as a crutch. if you can't a section on your skill alone, you grind. if you can fight it out, grinding should be next to unnecessary. like, if you cut out all the chaff, if a player wants to skip everything optional, the base power curve should be whatever you automatically get from doing the minimum linear content. Yeah I hate to be the first person to bring up Dark Souls in a conversation like this but those games do it well. If you're good at playing the game, you can take on any enemy with the upgrades/XP you naturally acquire playing through it. If you need some help you can make things easier (but never trivial) by grinding a little bit. And then, if you're completely insane, you can beat the entire game without leveling up or upgrading your weapons once on the Donkey Kong bongo controllers or a DDR dancepad.

Anyway, speaking of bullshit RPG mechanics, I hit the midboss(?) in Persona 5's first Palace and died to them many times. Now I've made it to the end of the dungeon (with 5 days left to beat it) and I have to leave and send a loving calling card? What the poo poo? Just let me beat the dungeon!

On the other hand, video games. tbf most people in the game can die to the hidden blade once you get literally the very first one in existence and it gains strength like crazy as you refine and upgrade it

the major problem being that you never get dual hidden blades (since it only gets fabricated like 1500 years after this game takes place), so you can only take out one guy by surprise, which means you need to change your ambush strats

The game takes into account the extra day so you'll never end up in a scenario where you finish yet run out of time. The important thing is that you can craft tools the night you send the calling card so if there were any locked chests you can grab those before hitting the boss itself.

Going back to the whole FPS chat thing, my pet peeve with modern shooters is that they forgot how to make organic feeling levels. Thankfully there's some blow back against that but like every FPS post-No One Lives Forever 2 to Human Revolution has been an empty room that the devs script in enemies at the appropriate trigger.
