you know that sound an iphone makes when you plug it in? what does it mean when it makes that sound without being plugged in, or when it's been plugged in for an hour already. there are no notifications on the screen, but this seems to happen every couple of days

i've been using a cheap nas (netgear readynas nvx/rndx400e) for the past seven and a half years and it looks like the power supply died. what do i do
- do surgery on an atx power supply i have lying around, because this nas doesn't use a standard atx pinout, and get it back up and working
- invest in some sata cables and get some sort of raid in my desktop. two raid 0? raid 5? raid 10? p sure my case and psu can handle four more disks
- send the nas to some lucky yosposter for yosmas and tell them it's a puzzle

not too worried about having lost everything on the disks, already decided i'm gonna build a replacement

I'm currently using the windows raid. it's ok. if it was me I'd be tempted to do the Frankenstein psu - it can't be that much different from a normal psu and seems like the least ish work? other than just buying a whole new nas thing

how do i make a windows bat file do this

code:

for i = 0 to 119

new_index = 120+(119-i)

copy file_i as file_new_index

i i have files 0 to 119 and want to ping pong them, but have to do so by coping the individual pngs to new file names (ended up at 238 or whatver

or python or whatever. python of course is always better

lmao i made it myself

code:
from shutil import copyfile

for i in range(1,119):

    src = '{:04d}'.format(i) + ".png"
    dst = '{:04d}'.format(119+(119-i)) + ".png"

    copyfile(src,dst)

MBAM seems to catch more stuff than windows defender, but IMO I would lock up the admin account with your own password, give them a standard one, and prevent installation of any programs.

are they actually getting viruses or is some guy calling them up on the phone from 'the microsoft' and telling them they have a virus and saying he'll fix it for $50

and then the guy in the cubicle next door calling them back in 3 weeks with the same spiel

The term "virus" is also commonly, but erroneously, used to refer to other types of malware. "Malware" encompasses computer viruses along with many other forms of malicious software, such as computer "worms", ransomware, trojan horses, keyloggers, rootkits, spyware, adware, malicious Browser Helper Object (BHOs) and other malicious software.

the medical associations of “virus” are also unfortunate, it’s not a great metaphor but i don’t think there’s any confusion of its blanket use. yospos, the forum for computer doctors

mbam is trash and there are 0 reasons to replace defender with anything on a home computer

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

yeah i just use defender on my own computers, but when attempting to fix some relatives' grandmaputers i have found that mbam locates more of the adware and poo poo that they have installed than defender does. at least it reports a larger number of dangerous files.

doesn't really matter bc the end result is always a wipe and reinstall, but maybe mbam might be more proactive about keeping the adware out in the first place?

cinci zoo sniper

adware is more of an end user problem, but, either way, id rely more on mbam scanner than on protection

but seriously an adblocker helps filter out a lot of the "click here for FREE VIRUS SCAN" stuff that installs malware and a focused policy of not downloading/looking at porn on the computer eliminates virtually all malware vectors

there's no downside, both practically and morally

Use opendns umbrella prosumer, install ublock origin, use chrome or Firefox, tell them not to download any programs or add-ons, setup their pics to backup to icloud/Google drive. The default antivirus is fine and no antivirus will work if you download something and say this is safe and override it. Opendns blocks a lot of malware even if it is installed and gets past the av. It's $20 a year for three devices

Defende, EMET or whatever the baked-in stuff is for Win10 fall creators, put all their user data on onedrive and hope for the best. Maybe turn on the disk snapshotting while you are at it so you have quick restore. Train them to use edge if they are IE people otherwise Chrome/Firefox should do an ok job of blocking bad plugins.

quoting from greythread

cinci zoo sniper posted:

Last time I posted bunch of thread posters helped me to get a setup for a media computer for my parents. The time to buy has come, so I've revised the setup, and am looking for some advice.

Budget of $1200 maximum (though I'd be surprised it takes as much).

The computer primarily is a movie watching box hooked up to a TV, but should also be a competent home office machine if need be. Requirements:

1) S/PDIF audio.
2) Smooth 4K movie playback. (Kind-of worried here about which ports to look out for on their future TV to hook things up for 4K @ 30/60 since HDMI supports 24 Hz only as per Intel website, but then that mobo below says it supports 60?)
3) Silent (e.g. no active cooling, preferably not even in PSU. There's a very fluffy cat in the apartment to watch out for too in that regard.)
4) 1-2 TB of disk storage.
5) Case dimensions, but I think I mentioned them last time when this was suggested, or did pick it myself - I don't remember.

What I have at the moment:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i3-8100 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor ($128.89 @ B&H)
Storage: Western Digital - Red 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($81.88 @ OutletPC)
Case: Silverstone - ML03B HTPC Case ($67.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($89.89 @ OutletPC)
Total: $368.65
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2017-10-30 15:48 EDT-0400

What I am stuck at - 370th motherboards. PCPartPicker only shows gamer stuff at the moment, but if that's the reality then oh well, not much to do about it. My current guess is ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming-ITX/ac.
