wasn't there a whole book in the new eu about everyone finding out about leia's parentage set before tfa? wouldn't be the first time a movie ignored a book but man that's real fast to already be reneging

Everyone knows Leia is Vader's daughter now. That's in a canon book, and one Rian Johnson had story input for. I'd hazard a guess that not everyone knows Kylo Ren is Ben, thus Leia's son, though. Not much is known yet about Ben's fall, other than he found out Vader was his grandfather via a public speech meant to discredit Leia while he was at Luke's Jedi Academy. Presumably, he didn't take the news well. But there's not much reason to believe that Kylo's true identity is public knowledge. So not everyone may know that Kylo is Vader's grandson.

It wouldn't surprise at all if the next movie contradicted a "canon" novel; I can't imagine Disney has the least respect for those. That isn't to say I wouldn't find it absolutely hilarious.

Again, though, the book in question had story input from Rian Johnson. As in, he reached out to the author and asked her to include something. The assumption is it’s either related to Leia and how everyone found out she’s the daughter of Darth Vader, or the state of politics in the galaxy. At the very least, if the director of the next movie got to have input into the story of the book, it’s unlikely he’ll contradict said book. He would have just given a different suggestion for the book. This goes beyond the head of cannon and what power he has. This is about Rian Johnson contradicting himself, on a pretty quick turn around. It’s not impossible, man could have changed his mind similar to a change in a second draft of a script. But it is pretty unlikely.

That's the second promo item with him wielding the lightsaber, so hopefully he will end up fighting with it at some point. Where that leaves Rey is the question. Maybe she gets taken out by Snoke, and Luke is like, "Welp, my turn."

It doesn't seem all that dissimilar to being in the Communications department of any multinational or large corporation, where your job is to ensure that every bit of public facing communication from the entire company is in sync to whatever degree is necessary. You control the book of current policies and programs, and the specific language that needs to be used in everything from a press release to a social media post, and anything anyone wants to release has to be checked and cleared for consistency by the Comms department

I know there has been an assumption that with Han dying in the first new movie, either Luke or Leia may die in the next movie, and that they might be hesitant to kill Leia with the death of Carrie Fisher.
