They're supposed to hunt subs, you don't need much other than depth charges.

Something bigger than a 4.1" deck gun would be nice for dealing with surfaced subs. It turns out a rounded pressure hull requires a fairly substantial gun to reliably penetrate. The Lewis guns would be for dealing with gun crews on a surfaced sub, and as a cheap nod towards AA firepower.

Early on the program was sending ships with dummy weapons to sea in Canada because of lack of munitions

Most of the dedicated convoy escort classes seem to have stuck with 4" (or even 3") guns and did just fine. The follow-on Castle corvettes plus the River class frigates had 4" guns, as did the other British frigates, while the Tacoma/Colony class frigate had nothing bigger than 3". In fact all the American destroyer escorts had 3" guns, save for the Rudderow and John C Butler class which had 5" guns.

Ram the sucker if you can. But you don't need to sink the sub to render it ineffective, given how slow underwater speeds were.

The Triple Alliance did have a couple of big potential enemies too, particularly the Tarascans and the Zapotecs. The Tarascans especially were a clear rival to the Mexica, if also probably a rung below the Mexica in terms of real military power.

The Tlaxcala meanwhile are a difficult case to judge. The Mexica claimed they didn't conquer them in order to conduct ritualistic warfare. However the Spanish made special note of the Tlaxacalans as formidable foes, having tangled with them before allying against the Mexica.

The official Mexica line might have been face saving propaganda - they had a pretty sophisticated understanding of that sort of thing and engaged in it regularly. Or that might have been true initially, and by the time the Spanish arrived on the scene the Tlaxcalan's had built up their military in order to get revenge on the Mexica. Either way, the Tlaxcalans contributed a lot of manpower to the Spanish led forces that eventually brought the Mexica down.

Their training was out of date and focused more on archery than gunpowder (this was part of a thing to preserve their distinct culture more so than a military decision). They were forbidden from having civilian jobs but inflation and whatnot meant their state pension eventually got to the point where it was barely sufficient. And most don't even actually serve in the military because there aren't enough billets so you've basically got generations of sitting around on the dole, sedentary in walled cities, about as far from nomadic steppe warriors as you can get.

Which isn't to say they were uniformly ineffective, the Mongol Banner cavalry under Senggerinchen were key to stopping the Taiping northern expedition.

This is off the top of my head, when not phone posting I can try to dig up some sources and get into more detail.

Fun fact that I have found out and will be looking into - looks like my house may have been originally built by the dad of British WWI ace Albert Ball.

We have the deeds for the house framed (because they look neat) and there is a signature for "Albert Ball" - father and son shared the same name and Albert the elder had a property business in Nottingham, so it seems likely. Will need to look into confirming.

hey does anyone have good resources to read about anarchists in the russian civil war? ive done a fair amount of reading on makhno and the Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine but I was curious about more reading on other factions in the greater conflict.

Also is there any good print stuff so far on rojava and kurdish stuff during the syrian civil war so far?

What do you want to know, in particular? If Makhno's your thing( and why wouldn't he? Horse-drawn machine gun squadrons, baby!), look up Buenaventura Durruti and his 'Columna de Hierra', which was sort of the same guy but in Spain.

One piece of advice: Stay away from anything written by communist historians, they got a really dumb crusade to blame left socialists for the outcome of the war at any cost going on.
