Often decent, rarely bulletproof. You can be just fine to have kids in your current situation, but then hit a snag, such as one of the kids has autism, or one of the parents spends time out of work, and suddenly you are on benefits. The only people rich enough to be sure that this will not happen to them are the upper middle class.

Only tangentially related to the argument at hand, but I find it very interesting that lobsters used to be considered trash subsistence food for peasants and prisoners because it was impossible to transport before the advent of railways and ice distribution, at which point it turned into an exotic luxury for those outside of the traditional lobstering areas in the Northeast. Same with oysters.

Seriously, something has happened over the past generation. My parents raised me (at least somewhat) securely on one electrician’s income. Then something happened over the last 20-25 years. Most of my friends are on the “gently caress having kids” train at this point, and at least some of it has to involve finances.

It's not really the economy per se. GDP per capita in the US is great, even accounting for PPP. Even median wages are fine compared to other developed economies, from what I've seen. The US just has poo poo for social safety nets, which hurts most people, but it particularly hurts families.

Yeah, but with the way the US is set up you're basically saying "anyone working class or below shouldn't have kids". You're not entirely wrong, but it's really more of a systemic problem (it shouldn't be the case that affluence is a prerequisite to responsible child-rearing).

Let's do the space-time warp again!

It shouldn't really need to be said, but creating new people isn't really comparable to mundane financial decisions. Also, it's worth pointing out that the places that provide robust social safety nets and things like access to education, healthcare, and family support actually tend to have lower birth rates. So if you think people are having too many kids, you should actually consider more socialism!

What happened is that wages stagnated compared to productivity and cost of living. Initially this was solved by dual-income families; having your stay-at-home parent get paid meant that the family had more money even though their wages weren't rising. Then we solved it through consumer debt, letting people leverage themselves to buy luxuries and ultimately essentials. Now we are in the situation where most families have all the adults working, most are in debt, and we don't have anything else to trade in as wages continue to stagnate.

Health insurance costs ballooning, student loans, and increased housing costs. They all conspire together to make us poor into our thirties.

The thing is, having a kid doesn't have to be expensive. But it's hard to fathom having a kid when you are saddled with debt, ever increasing rent, and a crappy job that doesn't are about you.

That’s a good point. My parents had barely any student loans. My dad had an AS and my mom got a full ride at Duke. (She wasn’t the sole income because being a social worker was soul crushing). And in the 25 years they had their house, they made additions but it still sold for over 5x what they bought it for. Now rent for a single room is almost never under $600 and you’re extremely lucky to get $10.50 at unskilled jobs with terrible benefits.

Burial insurance for young adult child? posted:

Hello, PF friends.
Might be an unusual question, but I hope it is taken seriously:
My son is 21, almost 22. He's an only child for both his bio dad and I. I'm remarried. All except bio dad live in Ohio now.
My son is taking some risks that I would consider "frightening", and I'd like to insure him for the price of a decent funeral...$10,000?
I don't want to get specific, but he is riding a motorcycle that belongs to his friend, is uninsured, he has no license, etc, etc.
What kind of insurance do I buy? Does he need to sign anything? He absolutely, completely refuses any help. He has some fairly serious mental illness that is not being taken care of now that he is an adult living outside of the house.
Just looking for advice. I hope I never have to bury my only child, but it looks like I should start worrying about it.

Correct. Prices are so high that cops and teachers are moving out of Auckland to find more affordable housing. When the middle class is struggling with rent and can never afford to buy a house you have problems. The poorest 50% work in manufacturing jobs or retail and can barely get by. We have a major housing crisis which the previous Government denied up until this year, and only because it's an election year.

The former Prime Minister said the queues of people trying to rent a house and the students forced to camp in the woods due to the lack of rentals was "a problem of success". Funnily enough they lost the election, and avocado_toast.txt will still not be enough for a deposit on a house.

Most people in every time period live precariously. This is because they spend whatever they earn when they earn it. The average house is 1000 square feet bigger now than it was in the 60s. If wages went up then people would buy bigger houses, newer cars and still have credit card debt.

Brother constantly using mother's SSN for quick cash loans

My brother is repeatedly taking out quick cash type loans using his own mother's social security number. My other siblings and I wanted to contact police after it happened last month, but Mom begged us not to. She only found out about the loan when she started getting harassing phone calls about it. He scrounged together the money to pay if off (in person, with Mom present) with the understanding that this can never happen again.

Mom calls me today to say he has done it again. She discovered a new loan for $1,800 or so on her credit report.

I know she needs to report the identity theft online, but can anyone offer some insight as to what will happen if she reports this to the police? Since we know who is doing it, does it change the process?

Is there anything she can do to stop him from using her social? I have read the PF Wiki about freezing your credit, but unfortunately she is trying to move to a senior apartment complex and is worried they won't be able to pull her credit to approve her application.

Edit: will be adding more details in the next couple of hours! (By 9pm central) Last I saw this only had 6 comments...thank you all!

Edit 2: Before I add some more details for the curious, I wanted to confirm that Mom did contact the police department and they came to her apartment to take a statement. We will be helping her through the process of freezing her credit. Thank you all so much for your advice!
My mom is 76. She has been divorced for decades and lives solely on her social security payments. She has no debt, other than the loan issues from my brother.

The son in question, her oldest, is 54 and has a long record of being an awful person. He was employed at a Check N Go type place in 2010 and was arrested and charged with forgery and two counts of fraud for (I believe) taking out loans in customers' names who did not request it. All of those charges were listed as felonies, it seems, and I have no idea how he is not currently in prison, nor ever went for more than a few days. I just pulled his criminal record and it does appear he was found guilty of all charges. Excuse my ignorance on how all of that works.
I do not believe there are any drug addiction issues, but with him being so estranged from the family it is hard to say. I know he seems to spend money extremely frivolously - constant new cars, a new Harley last year. He also posted a gofundme to FB a few months ago to help pay for 'legal troubles' that seem to be related to an ex-roommate and her young daughter. It is possible he is having more than his usual money problems in relation to that mess.

I believe another issue with my Mom hesitating to press charges initially, is that my brother is in fairly poor health. I'm sure she fears he would not survive long in prison. Again - she did contact police this evening and they took a statement and got his information. We'll see where things go from here.

Okay, I know I acted stupid I just wanted to help out. I was walking home from school when these two ladies seemed like they really needed help and asked if I could cash in their paycheck and take the cash deposit out. They said they worked in an elderly home nearby and had their wallets stolen. One of them was a single mother who lived paycheck by paycheck to support her and her son and the other was barely getting by on her rent. I felt really bad and just wanted to help out (yes I know I’m dumb). I figured if the checks went through, there shouldn’t be any problems. The checks went through the ATM, which totaled out 1.2k. We exchanged numbers since the money wasn’t yet readily available but they took whatever cash I had in my account which was 400. Later that night one of them kept calling me to pick up the rest of the money and their money did deposit so my account had 700. She wanted all 700 but I told her I needed some money myself. I gave her 500 so she could pay her rent (she doesn’t have my address we met at a nearby place). It turns out all the checks got bounced. I don’t even think these were actual paychecks anymore. My accounts frozen right now and I’m wondering if I look really suspicious to the bank. My balance right now is like -800. I don’t know what to do.

UPDATE: I texted her, telling her the rest of her money’s been deposited and that we should meet up soon. She wants to meet up soon. Should I go to the police station?
