The degree to which shogi can be interesting in a technical sense to someone not super into shogi is met in March. Beyond that point is madness.

I saw people talking about The Flowers of Evil in this thread, decided to give it a try and it was great! Binged it in a couple of days and while it starts a bit weird it was still a very enjoyable read. I like a good drama but I thought it was great how the second half is a reconstruction of Kasuga. A lot of stories just keep punching and punching it's characters and never let they take a break, it's nice to see one suffer but turn it around.

Hakumei & Mikochi 34 It was a sort of a small throwaway line but the idea that there is indeed inter-species romance/marriage is kind of cute. That's a cool 'lil community

My experience reading Flowers of Evil consisted of constantly laughing at "these crazy teens" and wishing I had friends who did that kind of crazy poo poo while growing up. It also had a unexpectedly nice/realistic ending, IMO.

After nearly a year, March comes in like a Lion vol. 13 is finally out/available Highlights include: Hayashida/Akari/Shimada love triangle, Nikaidou being badass, the Grim Reaper getting a little mini-arc, and what I can only imagine is a lead in to a proper Kyouko arc. The last one there has me pretty excited.

Oh, a new Trail of Blood. I wonder what this chapter will be like- Oh. That was...something. Alright, I think I can safely put my silly theory about our main character hallucinating certain things.

To You, the Immortal continues to be an emotional rollercoaster. The new villain is one of the most hateable characters I've read in a long time, especially because so much of what they've done is left implied. Unfortunately, it's hard to post any pictures at all without revealing significant twists. But you should be reading it. EDIT: No, wait, this one page is a microcosm of the whole manga. Fushi stumbles over something, is shocked, and then everything dies. Squidster fucked around with this message at 16:41 on Nov 1, 2017 |

I got to the part with the disfigured boy and dropped it because IMO it was treading into misery porn territory that I have no need of in my life at this point.

i probably should have dropped it after the second arc was also about a nice child who died horribly, but i was too dim to realize that is entirely what the manga is about.

It's definitely not a bundle of laughs, but it doesn't feel like it's attempting to be shocking in the manner of Fire Punch, etc. When a character dies, the godling protagonist absorbs their shape and their soul. He is instinctively building an afterlife for the people he loved. I'm on board with the sweeping scale of the thing, and curious to see how the world shakes out. Fushi has picked up his first worshippers, and may or may not be accidentally starting an empire-toppling cult. Disfigured kid turned out alright.

To you, the Immortal is head and shoulders above almost any manga running right now and labelling as "misery porn" is to miss the point entirelly about what it's trying to do. The little kid is a real gut punch, i agree.

Everytime To You, The Immortal is mentioned, I’m reminded that Immortal Hounds exists. I looked up the raws and the only chapters I found (~12 ch ahead of where scanlations ended) only had two recognizable characters and there might have been a timeskip? Ugh, just end already.

Surprisingly, Immortal Hounds got bad after it threw all the fun characters in cryogenic jail.

It's a shame they ruined such an interesting premise by basically making it torture porn.

so i started binging To You, The Immortal because of this thread and having made it through 30 chapters i really don't get how people arrive to the conclusion that it exists to inflict misery on the reader. in spite of the characters' hardships or deaths, the series remains optimistic and kind and also filled with a good dose of humor. it feels no different to me than stuff like vinland saga or spirit circle, and the "misery" is part of a cycle of that sees the characters experience the fullness of life and death. which honestly, has been incredibly cathartic. like if the fact that it continues to dip into sadness turns people off, i could understand that. or maybe you don't value the journey Fushi is going on when you know the immediate destination is the death of someone close to them. but saying it's misery or torture porn is a straight up misrepresentation of how the series it handling its characters, tone, and themes.

In general I find myself usually not minding stuff that people complain about being "torture porn." Like, I read Ajin, which people said this about, and it really wasn't that bad? Like, there was one chapter that I would describe was torture porn, but other than that it wasn't anything too bad (the series became better later IMO, and I really like the villain). The same goes for most of Immortal Hounds (which, while not amazing, I found to still be pretty entertaining, with only a couple chapters being uncomfortably violent). "Tragedy porn" bothers me a lot more than torture porn. Series where really sad stuff happens in a manipulative way annoy me, because it's like the tragedy version of a horror movie with a lot of jump scares. An old example that I consider pretty much the epitome of this is the old manga/anime Saikano. Basically anything where characters are introduced, developed, and then die seemingly for the sole sake of being really depressing.

I got into Immortal and it's pretty good, I think calling it tragedy porn is unfair short of like evil chick randomly coming back as a super ninja. He's immortal and everyone around him isn't so yeah people are gonna die. Oddly enough I couldn't really get into Koe No Kotachi at all

Koe No Katachi started interesting but ended up becoming a fairly standard romantic drama thing, but what I've read of Immortal is really unique and interesting. edit: To elaboratate, one issue I had with Koe No Katachi is that it had the opportunity to do something far more interesting with the premise than it ended up doing. I felt like the deaf girl being so kind and forgiving basically eliminated what could have been an interesting vector for conflict/drama. Having her forgiveness be something that was a struggle on her part (as a parallel to the protagonist's struggle with his own guilt) would have been interesting, but instead she was just basically a saint regarding the issue. At least part of that is the poor girl having like zero self-esteem. She gets called out on it too, on how when she gets mocked or yelled at she just sits there and takes it.
