Classy.

I don't think it will be as big a problem as you imagine. Anything but the most simplistic Photoshops in the most ideal conditions will usually fail forensic analysis. Video is far more complex. The only problem is really the masses that are morons and believe everything they see or hear, but you don't even need an elaborate ruse to sway popular opinion. Just saying something is so is enough to convince them - no evidence required.

That said though, with everybody carrying a video camera in their pocket, it just becomes about proof in aggregate rather than singular (just like documentation).

I'm pessimistic enough to predict that any edited video the police produce will be accepted as the unedited truth, and any contradicting videos taken by other people at the scene being treated as a conspiracy against the police. (In fact, I may have even just described the status quo.)

Plans were made on her end around the funding but he was MIA. When she finally followed up, Altman’s secretary said his focus changes often and he probably just forgot about the whole idea.

Does it even really matter anymore? Factual reporting and honest opinions are exotic designer drugs for weirdos even today. Its fake news and hot takes all the way down already. You don’t need to photoshop poo poo, just grab a stock photo from some unrelated event five years ago and label it as whatever and by the time some nerd gets around to image search it to find the original source everyone else has already taken it at face value and moved on. The damage is already done.

The thing is, you can’t fight desinformation with truth. It just doesn’t work. Just repeat the message enough and even the most skeptical people will start to accept that the goalposts have moved. Even things that are clearly presented as fiction easily bleed into the perception of reality - we’re just that bad at remembering things accurately. The rational, fact-based view of reality is a myth, an impossibility, because while we may be able to tell fact from fiction today, our world view is formed from all the preconceived notions in the back of our head, and now that we have the internet those are constantly being massaged by all the poo poo passing by in your Twitter feed, no matter if it’s RT or Mother Jones or even dril.

At most they can make a whitelist of ~important people~ accounts that only middle management drones are allowed to ban (free lowtax!), but it's not like they can stop an employee from making a mess on the last day before quitting their poo poo job.

I'd been assuming that I missed the meeting where it was decided Altman was a guru: there was that recent longform article about him where he came across as some unstoppable expertise machine but his "credentials" were glossed over. I mean, Paul Graham has actually done things so Altman must be the same, right?

And now he just seems to be a guy with a massive case of Engineers Syndrome.

Here is the scary thing to me. Right now, a lot of evidence from videophones is proving (although not, alas, in prosecutions) that police brutality against black people exists. As soon as there's a video equivalent of Photoshop, those cellphone videos are automatically discredited, unless streamed to a reliable provider with a timestamp.

e: Part of what I mean by "a video equivalent of Photoshop" is that it's as ubiquitous and cheap as Photoshop. Once any rando with a PC can spoof video, we've got a problem.

On a related note, there's a growing problem of Youtube and Facebook taking down these videos when they trigger a "disturbing content" filter. And that prevents prosecutions from even being a possibility. (Or other stuff like truth and reconciliation processes, or public shaming, or what have you.)

More amusing than any misguided claims that Silicon Valley is overrated are the many attempts at branding every random outcropping of the tech industry as Silicon [Whatever].

In Oregon, we have the "Silicon Forest", which even as an Oregonian I'm very ehhhhhh about. Any state with more than a couple million people is going to produce some tech companies, and they're naturally going to cluster around whatever the biggest population center is. It's nothing to write home about.

The attempt to label Eugene as the "Silicon Shire" is just embarrassing. You had one semiconductor factory, guys, and it closed a decade ago. The entire tech industry combined employs fewer people there than the University of Oregon. (Though I suppose "A Surprising Number of Homegrown Terrorists" wouldn't have been as appealing a nickname.)
