The Habs came out of last season hoping to build up scoring strength and shore up the bottom-6 of the d, the assumption being that doing so would allow them to capitalise on the "Division Leading" regular seasons they tend to put out.
The Oilers came out of last season hoping to bolster their lineup with some solid depth that would help them make serious runs at Stanley Cup success in the years to come.

At this stage of the season the Habs are 4-8-1 and the Oilers are 3-7-1.

Given as how the Pacific and Atlantic are garbage divisions you need around 100 points to be in with a realistic whiff of making the playoffs. The Habs need Ninety One loving Points from Sixty Nine (NOICE) Goddamned Games. They need to run a 108-point per season pace from here on out to be in with a whiff of making the playoffs. If you say 105 points to get one of the seats in the Atlantic, you're talking a 114 point over season pace.
The Oilers are in basically the same boat.

HAS and OAS aren't having meltdowns that are like "woe is me, our teams are bad", they're having meltdowns that are more like "we expected to be competing for rings and instead we're out of the race for the playoffs by November". And honestly, as far as "reasons for meltdowns" go that's a pretty loving decent one.

I feel like your point estimates are a little high. Has anyone in the modern Era ever missed the playoffs with 97 points?

Pretty sure Killorn was poo poo talking the bench which doesn't make it "ok" to spray water on him but it is funny

Stamkos losing his poo poo over it was also pretty funny

e: Seems to be evidence that the Rangers are going to make Desharnais a healthy scratch tomorrow and while I think relying on him as the 2/3C is painful I'm also not sure wtf they're thinking with this either...last night they benched him in the 3rd and were double shifting Hayes and Zibanejad in his spot. Are they going to just run 11 F and keep doing that or call someone up or move Miller to C? WTF.

I don't think so but a few teams were close. Last year the Islanders and Lightning had 94 and missed. Boston missed with 93 in 2015-16, and the Bruins also missed with 96 in 2014-15. Kings missed with 95 in 2014-15 as well.

Stamkos was arguing the slashing penalty, and sprayed his water bottle in response to being told that wasn't a penalty.

Yeah what the hell is going on here. AV called Nieves up because 11F wasn’t working for them. I wonder if this means a trade is coming at some point this season, Zibby, Hayes, Nieves doesn’t seem tenable.

Hey SAS dudes, in a couple weeks a few buddies and I are are going on a hockey road trip. We're stopping in Columbus to see the game against the Rangers, and then moving on to Nashville to see the game against the Avalanche the next night. We have our accommodations and tickets sorted out, but we have Saturday night after the game and then all day Sunday in Nashville and we have no idea what to do. Anybody have any suggestions for food, drink, or entertainment options?

Ton to do in Nashville.

Walkable to the stadium you can get to 3 micro brews minimum: Yazoo, Tennessee Brewing and Jackalope. Flying Saucer has a great selection and is 8 blocks from the stadium.

Music wise visiting both Grimeys and Third Man Records is a must do.

Parnassis (sp?) Books is a small indie book shop that’s really cool.

Best breakfast: there’s a few, but I’ll stand by pancake pantry. Biscuit Love in the gulch is hipster but I like it.

Hot chicken is def a thing. I just never got into it when I lived there, so I don’t know he main places.

Frist Art Center is cool, that would be a good Sunday thing. Nashville also always has some event going on so check the local listings. If it’s roller derby season roller derby games are fun.

Nashville is pretty spread out, so it’s more different segments of town vs walking everywhere. In general and no particular order, 8th street, 12th street, 21st, east Nashville (5 points), downtown are all good options.

Basically, anything that isn’t loving honky Tonks.

If I recall correctly, his interviews were really bad and that's what hurt his draft stock, which sounds about par for the course for Kessel.

Depends on your criteria. Backstrom is point per game player that has stayed healthy pretty much the whole time. If you're drafting again with the benefit of hindsight, it's hard not to give the edge to Backstrom.

It's pretty close but I'd probably go with Backstrom since I think the offense is more or less a wash but Backstrom is a better two-way player.

This is not actually changing much this year. 0.877 for Price and 0.873 for Montoya. Both goaltenders are in the bottom 15 of the league out of 69 goaltenders)...

Aside from being worried next year you're stuck with a goaltender getting injured 3/3 years and paying 10 millions forever for him.

As the Oilers look forward to another loss, let's look at their even strength production this season for each player:
Maroon (4) - McDavid (5) - Draisaitl (2)
Lucic (1) - Nuge (3) - Slepyshev (0)
Caggiula (0) - Strome (0) - Jokinen (0)
Pakarinen (0) - Letestu (0) - Kassian (0)
Khaira (0), Yamamoto (0)

Nurse (0) - Larsson (2)
Klefbom (0) - Benning (1)
Auvitu (0) - Russell (1)
Gryba (0)

Only 19 even strength goals. Outside of the top line + Nuge, there's only been 1 goal from 10 different forwards, including the guy we are paying $6 million per season to for the next 6 seasons.

Fire Chiarelli.

A recent Athletic article showed that Ceci gets put out against other teams' top players way more than any other Ottawa D, and gets circles skated around him.

So Ceci's bad, but Ottawa front office thinks he's good.
