It's not uncommon for athletes (and actors/actress), specifically ones that compete internationally, to set up shell accounts in tax havens (Panama, Monaco, occasionally the US) and list that as their home for tax purposes. The primary reason is it A. lower taxes, and B. helps keep things simple for accounting purposes (I forget most of the specifics). This came up when the Panama Papers leaked as well.

Reason A is true reason B is wrong and the complete opposite. Like five different companies were leasing Lewis's jet at the same time, this is a long established strategy where these companies deliberately make this poo poo confusing as hell so that when some underpaid guy in a government tax department looks at it he can't make heads or tails of the situation and he'll get screamed at by his supervisor if he takes the time required to actually go through and vet everything.

As well as other known tax evaders like all big corporations.

As long as they stick to the law in the country they declare taxes (and the countries they ship their income from), it’s legal. Besides public outcry they haven’t got much to fear.

Other news today, water is wet and ice is cold.

A lot of these tax dodges are legal loopholes. I know it's incredibly tempting to piss and moan about the wealthy avoiding tax payments, but if you can pay your accountant $100k a year to save you $5m a year in tax through entirely legal means, why the gently caress wouldn't you?

If you're gonna be pissed at anybody, be pissed at the tax authorities and legislatures who deliberately create 9,000 page tax codes riddled with lovely loopholes only the super wealthy can afford to exploit.

ETA: fun fact, I'm off to Jersey on Wednesday to advise a couple of clients who, in turn, advise hundreds of wealthy individuals how to avoid paying tax. My own little tax dodge whilst being out there for 16 hours will be to bring back cigarettes and not pay VAT on them. #megafag

Because you should care about people other than yourself. That’s what taxes are for.

And it’s incredibly simple-minded and naive to say “well the loopholes are there!” when it’s the super rich who lobbied them into existence in the first place.

I am absolutely pissed at the tax authorities but on the other hand the finance minister of our country is the head of a major financial consulting firm, has major offshore assets, and couldn't push through closing a tax loophole that says "You can give anybody and everybody in your family $18k tax free as 'salary' every year for doing gently caress all with no consequences and could make that amount higher to completely dodge higher tax brackets"

It seems much more realistic to just shame people with high exposure in the media into paying taxes properly. This is the society we're in lmbo.

The thing is, the people with high exposure in the media have no real reason to start paying their fair share even if shamed. They're under no obligation to release their tax returns even if they say they do. We'll take them at their word and be none the wiser.

You're completely right, but as I said it seems much more likely than any government actually closing these loopholes anytime soon.

Hamilton's morally wrong but legally sound avoidance of vat due for personal use of a £3m jet he was using mostly for business use is in no way an attempt at distraction from the allegations against wealthier but less famous individuals. Lord Ashcroft's hundred million pound avoidance while being a major Tory donor, breaking numerous laws by claiming (publicly) to be living in the UK, paying tax and sitting in the House of Lords while actually continuing to be non-domiciled the whole time is definitely less important, for instance.

That's a little :tinfoil: tbh.

The much more likely situation is they sat round in a meeting room and said "Nobody knows who the gently caress Lord Ashcroft is, if we do an expose on Lewis Hamilton that will generate alot more heat."

Which isn't to say that the bigger issue isn't the shadier out of the spotlight poo poo, but news is overwhelmingly dictated by what's going to get read more.

I'm not making a value judgement, be nice.

They should absolutely be closed because the majority beneficiaries are the people who don't need the extra money. It's admirable that the likes of James Dyson and JK Rowling do not go out of their way to take advantage of tax loopholes when they would objectively benefit from doing so in a material way because they think it is wrong. Equally, I'm not going to poo poo on somebody for taking advantage of them when they're legal.

It makes me irrationally angry how mainstream media outlets like the BBC wilfully conflate tax avoidance and tax evasion and they're nothing the loving same for Christ's sake.

Lord Ashcroft is the man who paid a lot of money to get both the Conservative party in the UK into power and the Liberal Party in Australia into power. He is An Enemy of the people.

When he fell out with Cameron he wrote a book “Call me Dave” which is where the now infamous pig loving allegations come from.
