As someone who's half African I've always despised people who mock African American name choices. Like really? Phonetically a lot of them are pretty drat close to a lot of African names and Swahili words. They are literally trying to make their own heritage because theirs was taken from them. They literally do not know what country their ancestors came from and meanwhile these bigots who are mocking them/not hiring them because of their names are always happy to spout bullshit about their lineage. Why is there no *insert white European* history month (which totally already exists). Where the gently caress is the Nigerian/Tanzanian/Kenyan/Congolese month you heaps of hot garbage? The other thing to consider is that "bad" name choices only seem to happen with black names. White people naming their children unconventional things is considered hip and creative. Not to mention the exact same things happening to people with Spanish-sounding names, which are not at all a class issue. My first name is very conventional, my last name is very Hispanic. It is very hard for me to get my foot in the door sometimes, and I've a much better time going as "first name middle name" than "first name last name" for interviews and housing searches.
