I didn't know if "revolkalutionists" was a thing, so I googled it and got this Salon article.

quote:

Before "Peanuts" there was "Skippy." And "Always Belittlin'." And "The Clancy Kids." And a wealth of other illustrations by Percy Crosby, one of America's most talented comic strip artists. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1891, Crosby's illustrious career began when he was in his teens, at a Socialist newspaper where fellow workers called him "Comrade Crosby." It ended in 1964 when he died, isolated and destitute, in an insane asylum. He had been committed 16 years earlier when he was diagnosed, possibly wrongly, as paranoid schizophrenic and delusional.

If skipping a class from time to time is a sign of irredeemable shittiness of the soul, then there has never been a decent person who went to college in the history of time.

I'm not familiar with this particular Baldo friend - is that a thing with him? Also, I hate Baldo. And his dad. And his little sister. And his aunt. And I hope that didn't spill over too much into my original comment.

I forget, has any Modesty Blaise story yet involved her and Willie being seriously incommoded, or is it just an endless parade of us pitying the fools who didn't realize who they were messing with?

There are a few, and a couple where they just flat-out lose, but in general "Modesty Blaise" is competence porn.

What's interesting as the strip goes forward is that O'Connell introduced just enough continuity that he had to go out of his way to find threats who either wouldn't have heard of Modesty, or who were self-confident enough to try it on with her and Willie anyway.

So wait -- judging by the historical events mentioned (Amelia Earhart disappearing, the battle of Marco Polo Bridge), Sam's earlier adventures happened in 1937. Now here we are in 1940 in the blink of an eye, and Sam already seems to be established in Chad French "Equitorial" Africa. Even for a strip that makes an art form of anticlimaxes, this is pretty special.

How did he manage to get a hold of a Jeep in 1940? They were still in the prototype stage then, and the civilian version wouldn't be available until 1945.

The thing to remember about Intelligent Life, as with Luann, is that there are no good characters: they're all terribly written caricatures of themselves. It's just that, in both cases, the people we're supposed to identify with and root for are completely insufferable, unlikable cockslaps, which makes bush-league jerks like Barry and Tiff look good by way of comparison.

They are not. Don't be fooled. Both strips are funnypage cancer.
