I've been playing Empyrion: Galactic Survival. It's pretty fun, you can build big spaceships, hover tanks and bases. Combat is rubbish though and I haven't tried the MP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFkmj3DuDgw Ships can get big https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKfsUixGIRE These indie games are already making GBS threads all over SC. By the time it's out it's going to be pretty meh. taxxe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpTJkM045PU

Sort of an X-files meets Myst type of feel.

It's great with the wheel, I have one of the cheaper Thrustmaster T150 wheels and it's actually the only racing sim that I haven't had to spend hours tweaking wheel settings to get it feeling right - literally changed 2 settings on my first play and haven't had to touch them since.

As we approach a year without an update, and CIG managing 0 out of 5 of the updates they promised would arrive this year (3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.0, SQ42 release), take a look at the communities reaction to the Gamescom 2016 scheduleStrid3r21 posted:i think it'll pick up steam into this next year. warpigs330 posted:If I have learned anything having watched all the CIG events since Citizencon 2014 I have learned that none of their roadmaps ever amount to much. I think the one thing we can reasonably expect is that 3.0 will be close to what they have said it will be and that 4.0 will be the first patch to introduce another system. warpigs330 posted:Personally I doubt they will let it languish for 6 months without an update, I think 2-4 months between updates is a bit more realistic. Though I highly doubt they will stick anywhere near that roadmap.

The Titanic posted:It happens. Crunch is very real in software unfortunately. But people don’t generally post twitter pictures about it. If they do it long it’s like another poster said earlier, there’s not necessarily a “You better do this poo poo or else” written anywhere, but it may be spoken and heavily alluded to by management. Yeah, for sure. Something one might wonder, though, is what exactly it is that CIG is crunching for at all? What's this major release? A .03 release of a game? Wow! I suppose the final gold release will see everyone work 24/7 on some stimperial-level boosters. The only reason there's any crunch at all at this stage is because they hosed everything up and need to save their face with an actual release of some kind. And what then, will the management suddenly forget this majestic team of yes-men and never call upon their crunching skills again until it's time for .3 release? Yeah, sure, exactly what's gonna happen. Sure, crunch is necessary in software dev, but in this case, it really is textbook mismanagement. And they're proud of it! quote:The only reason EA gets flak I’d because they are known as a “bad or evil company”, but it seems like CIG is working hard in that department too. If the tide ever turns, all those really bad twitter posts will come back to haunt them. quote:Also it’s funny when they are constantly looking for staff while also posting endless photos of people working late and through the weekends. I don’t know anybody who would be attracted to that kind of environment from a new potential employee looking for a new company to work for. Nahh. "Hey! Look! We have work! Lots of work! You know how big that is in today's economy?" Toops posted:I agree crunch sucks, but I'm gonna throw a little wrinkle in the hard line. I've worked for a couple different "mature" start ups (20-100 ppl) that went too far the other way. They were so adamant about "work life balance," "no heroics," "keg beer and xbox at 3pm," and "no crunch" that in each case, the culture became pretty half-assed. I come from the old school, where you work until the work is done. That means some 10-12 hour days if you're up against a deadline. That means refactoring over the weekend sometimes because you care enough to do that extra bit. That means some long nights if your deployment went fucky. You do what has to be done, but if the management is a bunch of brain-dead monkeys, nothing you ever do is going to be enough. I presume your crunches involved things that actually had some sort of a scope rather than working on the most open development dream ever. It would have to end some time, and you more or less knew the end conditions. Those guys? Nobody knows anything, it's just do things until Chris' Fidelity Cup fills up at last.

Toops posted:That experience left me with such a bad taste that I can't bring myself to buy another Blizzard game. Bliz is probably the best game studio in the world, and they've made incredible games since D3. I applaud them for having the balls to remove the real-money auction house, and I've heard D3 has really improved, which is great. I just have no interest in re-visiting D3 at all. They lost me when they made my monk lose gold as soon as they stepped outside of town. Hell even breaking a pot meant you lost durability.

It feels like they were hoping someone would buy the engine or they could abandon the project like their previous efforts for about a year but have since resumed some kind of forward movement. But, no, basically the game is a slightly more optimized version of what came out years ago.

When I was a child, I played the Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness demo. My computer wasn't powerful enough to run it, so what I saw was a scrambled video, instead of the normal game, but I could still play the game through sound and the occasional tiny window through the scrambling. When I finally got the game to work, it suddenly wasn't as interesting. It was easy now. What had changed was that the game no longer required me to engage my imagination, and that's what they're selling at CiG, a chance to engage your imagination. They've monetized your imagination, as a business model.
