If you want to get into Fate and don't want to read the VN just watch Unlimited Blade Works. It should be on most streaming sites and it's okay.

Once the Heaven's Feel movies are complete, there'll really be no reason to read the VN. You'll miss out on Fate, I guess, but....eh. Fate's really more just there to establish the concept.

the last VN I read (Kindred Spirits) I mostly read while lying down in bed on my cheapo tablet, doing a remote desktop thing. It wouldn't work for a game with any sort of animation, but it works just fine for games like KS or Fate with mostly still shots. Also, you get to lie down.

f/sn's not even 100 hours, it's like half that. each route is maybe 15-20 hours long and actually i would argue missing out on fate does detract a bit from ubw and heaven's feel but also i'm not going to argue further that you should read the vn, if you have actual medical problems that would make you wary of sitting down and doing that
