hillary's husband had the ability to stop having slaves working the governor's mansion and decided not to. the next gov of arkansas did though. i think that makes her quite a bit more culpable than kilroy, especially when she had her own favorite methodology for picking good slaves and waxed eloquent about their lack of emotional intelligence

To put this in perspective, Kamila Harris is infinitely better on the issue of prison labor than most republicans. That puts her in the middle of the spectrum of good/bad on the issue. She isn't exactly out there advocating for gulags like some of you guys here, but she also isn't helping improve the situation. This has lead me to not be as keen on her as someone that would be better on this issue.

I am not going to comment on Hillary Clinton as it serves no purpose.

I won't be voting for her re-election if that's what you are asking. My tolerance of her has little impact on her status as a sitting senator, and since i am not a single issue voter I will continue to evaluate her on other issues while keeping this one in mind.

Being in the middle of an issue like prison labor should not be interpreted as being "good". Scoring 50% on a test puts you in the middle of possible scores, but it doesn't mean you scored well. It also means there are people out there scoring worse than her that she is indeed better than.

Gulag =/ Jail

Although our prison system is closer to gulags than it is a reformation jail system like the netherlands, so you may have a point.

By the way, it hasn't really been discussed in this thread due to higher profile races, but there was a municipal election for the city of Minneapolis last night. Minneapolis uses ranked choice voting so not all the results are in, but the incumbent mayor has been unseated by Jacob Frey. The second choice option for that race was Raymond Dehn, the Our Revolution endorsed candidate. Ward 3 had a DSA candidate lose in the third round despite a sizeable lead in the first and second rounds. Multiple trans candidates won, including ward 8's Andrea Jenkins, a black transwoman, and ward 4's Phillippe Cunningham, a black trans man.

St. Paul also elected its first black mayor in Melvin Carter. E: I don't know much about the St. Paul election.

I'm gonna add to this post to mention that the incumbent that Philippe Cunningham unseated was a long-serving lovely Dem.

Question for the forum leftists. What are your opinions on radio host Thom Hartmann. I've been listening to his show for almost a decade now and I credit him with helping me become less of a centrist over the years. Curious what others think of him.

Lee Carter is the candidate that has us all shaking our heads. He didn't do any fundraising of note, refused to tell the VA Dems what he was up to to the point that they threw their hands up and said Go With God, and showed up to every single event he saw on the calendar. Like, he was a candidate masquerading as a volunteer. Nobody knew what to make of him. We were happy to have him show up on Saturday walks - he was friendly, a little awkward, and just a pleasant dude. And then he won and the whole room went WHOA.

Don't be shocked if he gets primaried from the center, if only because he makes a point of not talking to party folks. But he's got two years to do some good work, and I bet that body of work will keep him afloat. I'm happy for him. Reminds me of a young Jimmy Tarlau (Maryland Bernie-esque dude).

All three candidates that I listed were DFL candidates. As far as Frey himself, I got the impression that he was reasonably progressive, but not as far as you'd want. I didn't follow the campaigns as well as I should have, so I can't speak to the type of campaign he ran. I actually spoke with him on the phone early on before the DFL primaries, and generally liked the things that he was saying, but with some reservations. That said, I distinctly remember being pretty disappointed with his stance on the minimum wage. He's definitely in favor of increasing it to $15, but on a tiered approach where it would only get increased to $12 for small family-owned business I think? That being said, it's hard to get too worked up about it because Minneapolis already passed a $15 minimum wage.

Hodges implemented a requirement for police to wear body cameras, but that obviously didn't go far enough. His website has a surprisingly large amount of ideas for how to address criminal justice reform from multiple angles. He also seems pretty serious about affordable housing, and even specifically called out building affordable housing in wealthy areas on his website, which I appreciate. Oh, and he apparently just gave his cell phone number out to people, myself included; that was odd.
