The whole thrust of the article was like that to be honest. People who had plenty of cash at one point but through bad luck ended up on the wrong side of a class divide they were happy to have in place when it benefitted them. Still clinging to the notion of the deserving poor.

They still deserve sympathy, cause they are getting screwed bad, but you get the sense they'd be happy to see the same thing happen to someone else.

It's probably a ploy so that if Sharkie goes, Keay will be referred too.

An oddity of my situation was that some people who didn't give you the time of day for years were suddenly chummy because "we're all in this together" oh are we just mate. But it was sad to see some, particularly old blokes, just frozen with helplessness, pottering around unable to get a grip on where to start dismantling their homes.

Uh, I'll think you'll find it's a lifestyle choice.

It's fashionable to have to live in a zero bedroom, 'chic microkitchen', glorified trailer with no toilet, shower or any concept of privacy. Family of three? Well, yeah. I'd argue that's the point, even if it wasn't so originally.

If our pollies can't or won't jump through this baseline stupid hoop, what are they going to do when they encounter another hoop they might think is stupid, like...for example...not abusing travel expenses? oh wait

Maybe if we had another Van Halen-esque rule that could catch anyone who doesn't GAF, and it changes every election...?

In Sykes v Cleary (an S44 case on office holding, not dual citizenship) the court said "the words "shall be incapable of being chosen" refer to the process of being chosen, of which nomination is an essential part", which was a relevant point since Cleary had resigned from his job between nomination and the declaration of results.

I'm not a lawyer but I think she's going to take a trip to the court.

No, we do not. The rest of us, obey the laws at our peril. Those that desire to make those laws, demand to have the full force of the law placed over them too.

Furthermore, we should each be allowed to enforce that particular law at a cost of 100 Pounds, per day. We can all agree this is right and proper.

Agreed

If random people can get hosed over by centrelink's robo debt collection and piss sampling computer then random pollies can get hosed over by the constitution. Being politicians they presumably have the resources and wherewithal to make sure they are compliant with the rules, which is a privilege that many centrelink recipients don't share.

That's not what I asked.

I was wondering if the people who think that the dual citizen part of S44 serves a genuine purpose would agree that it would be better if it only applied to successful candidates, not all candidates.

E: I'm not interested in rehashing arguments about whether politicians should adhere to the same standards as everyone else (because it's obvious they should be), I'm interested in what people think the specifics of S44 should be.

If it's law apply it to everyone equally and by the letter.

Treat any politicians who received salary and wages improperly the same as any Centrelink recipient who received a benefit improperly, regardless of reason, since nobody else gets the loving benefit of the doubt, a chuckle and a hearty slap on the back before being sent off scott free.

A fair go means a fair go for everyone. Since the bar has been set pretty low for "gently caress you, pay us money back" I think we know what needs to happen.
